H. J. BERKLEY COLLAPSIBLE DISPENSING TUBE Filed Aug. 15. 1923' Patented Oct. 7, 1924.
UNITED STATES HENRY J. BERKLEY, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COLLAPSIBLE DISPENSING TUBE.
Application filed August 15, 1923. Serial No. 657,509.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HENRY J. BnnKLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in theState of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Dispensing Tubes, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of collapsible dispensing-tube and is especially directed to the nozzle structure and the improved means for controlling the discharge of material from said nozzle.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of discharge-nozzle for tubes containing tooth-paste, salves, paints or other pastes or semi-fluids and to provide an improved means for effectually closing said nozzle and which cannot become detachcd and lost from the nozzle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,-
Fig. 1. shows a collapsible tube embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2. illustrates an enlarged vertical sectional detail through the same with the nozzle closed.
Fig. 3. shows a. cross-sectional detail through the nozzle as the same would ap pealr if viewed on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, an
Fig.4 4. illustrates a portion of the tube with the nozzle closure in the opened position and shows the operation of the device,'- the view being in perspective.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 designates a collapsible tube body of any desired construction with a breast 6 at one end thereof.
A hollow nozzle 7 projects from the center of the reast and on its interior this nozzle is provided with a flaring chamber 8 in that it increases in area as it extends outwardly from the breast. This nozzle is provided with an outer end wall 9 that is imperforate in that said wall is free of any opening so that the nozzle is entirely closed at the outer en On the exterior the nozzle tapers and also increases in diameter as it extends outwardly from the breast so that the outer closed end of the nozzle has a greater diameter than the It is to be noted that the screw-thread 10 extends all the way to the outer closed end of the nozzle so that no stop shoulder of any kind is formed on the nozzle. The advantage and purpose of this will presently be more fully explained.
A discharge opening 11 is provided in the side of the nozzle near the outer larger end thereof.
On the exterior of the nozzle there is provided a collar 12 which latter has a tapered and internally screw-threaded inner wall 13. This tapered wall of the collar is of a greater diameter at its end 14 than at its inner end 15 in order that it may engage and be retated on the tapered screw thread 10 of the nozzle so as to be moved between the outer closed-end of the nozzle and the inner breast-end thereof.
It is immaterial as to how the collar 12 is placed upon the nozzle but this can be accomplished by forming the bod and neck separately and placing the col ar on the small end of the neck before the latter is united to the body or it may be done by 10- cating the collar in a mould and then casting-3w blowing the neck within the collar.
y tapering the nozzle and the collar and allowing the tapered thread 10 of the nozzle to extend to the extreme outer end thereof it is believed to be obvious that the collar may be screwed outwardly on the nozzle and over the side discharge-opening 11 until it becomes wedged on the screw threads, thus ensuring a ti ht closure over the opening even though t ere be some wear of or flaw in the soft metal of which this class of tubes is usually formed.
By turning the collar and causing it to travel on the nozzle toward the breast 6, the opening 11 may be uncovered and the contents expressed or discharged therefrom by the a plication of pressure to the collapsible tubeody as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
Having described my invention. I claim,-
1. The combination with a collapsible tube, of a nozzle projecting from one end of the tube said nozzle being exteriorly tapered and increasing in diameter as it extends outwardly from the tube and said nozzle having a side discharge opening and also havin a tapered exterior screw-thread and a co ar having a. screw-thread to engage the tapered threads on the nozzle said collar serving to close said discharge-opening.
2. The combination with a collapsible a, collar encircling the nozzle said collar tube, of a, nozzle projecting from one end having a tapered and sorew-tlu'eeded open- 111 of the tube and being exteriorly tapered and ing to e the tapered threads on the serew-threaded,-the threads at the outer, nozzle 8.35 51 6 collar being of a. width to 5 end of the nozzle being of a. greater diameter cover the opening-in the side of the nozzle.
than the threads around the inner end of In testimony whereof I aflix my signesaid nozzle and the nozzle being closed at ture. the end but having a. side discharge-opening, HENRY J. BERKLEY.
