To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines, and more particularly to the feeding mechanism of a sewing machine which is adapted for forming re atively long stitches.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above character wherein the feed of the fabric is accomplished by a lateral movement of the needle while in the material, and wherein the looper cooperating with the needle is of a character to form double locked chain stitches and said looper is moved bodily with the needle in its lateral feeding movements so as to be properly positioned to cooperate with the needle and. permit a relatively wide range of lateral movement of the needle stitches.
A further object of the invention is to provide a needle feeding mechanism of the above character wherein the needle and looper are carried by the pivoted yoke which swings for giving a lateral movement to the needle for imparting feeding movements to the material. i

The invention is directed to a sewing machine which is adapted to operate upon coarse material, such as used for forming bags, and more particularly to the feeding pivotal support for the needle mechanism for feeding the material a stitch length. In certain classes of work, it is desired to feedthe material from one half to three-quarters of an inch between needle punches, and considerable difficulty has been experienced in properly controlling the material to bring about an even feed'thereof for such relatively long stitch lengths. This is accomplished in my improved machine by a lateral movement of the needle. The needle bar is mounted in an oscillating yoke, and this yoke is timed to oscillate when the needle is in.;the material so as to carry the material a stitch length by a lateral movement of the needle. needle is the ordinary threaded looper movable transversely of the line of feed, and means is provided for giving said looper the ordinary needle avoiding movement.

Mounted to rotate in suitablebearings in the overhanging arm is a driving shaft l which is operated by a belt pulley 5. Mounted on the supporting bed 1 is a work support 6 on which the ma terial rests during the stitching thereof. Said work support is provided with a throat plate "8 which is formed with a long needle slot 8 which permits the needle to move laterally while in the material. needle is indicated at 9 in the drawings, and said needle is carried by a needlebar 10. The looper is indicated at 11 in the drawings gnd is of the usual threaded type V for cooperating with the needle to form shaped part 16 which connects spaced bearings 17 and 18. Mounted in these bearings is a shaft 19 and pivotally supported upon the outer end of the shaft 19 is a looper carrier 12. Said carrier is pivoted at 20 to said shaft. The shaft 19 is provided with the usual cone bearings, and the oscillations of the shaft give to the looper its needle avoiding movement, while the oscillation-s of the looper carrier 12 on the shaft 19 causes the looper to enter and to leave the needle loop.
The details of the bearing for supporting the yoke 13 are more clearly shown in Fig. i. The standard 2 is provided with a supporting bracket 21 which is provided with a vertically extending slot 22. A. sleeve 23 is located in said slot and is provided with a head 24 adapted to bear against one face of the bracket. A nut 25 threaded onto the outer end of the sleeve bears against a washer and serves as a means to clamp the sleeve in adjusted positions in said slot 22.

The oscillations of the looper into and out of the needle loop are brought about through a link 37. The shaft 4; intermediate its ends is provided with a crank 38 having a ball section 39. The link 37 is connected to this ball section at its upper end and at its lower end is connected to a ball stud 4-0 carried by an arm l1 fixed to the looper carrier 12. This looper carrier 12, or as clearly shown in Fig. 3, is in the form of ayoke straddling the enlarged head on the end of the shaft/19. By means of this ball connection for the link 37, said link will swing with the looper in its bodily movements and as the shaft rotates will oscillate the looper. lit will be noted that the pivotal connection for the link 37 is in line or substantially so with the pivotal connection. between the crank 33 and the lug on the needle bar, and thus the timing of the looper and needle is maintained during the oscillations of the yoke. The ring 58 is seated in a socket 60 in the bed p ate, and the bolt 59 bears against the spring 58 intermediate its ends, and by adjusting the bolt 59 the tension of the spring 58 may be varied.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A sewing machine including inco'mbination, a needle, a pivoted supporting yoke in the upper end of which said needle re meansfor swinging said yoke for shifting the needle while in the material for feeding the same, a looper mounted on the lower end of said yoke so as to oscillate in a plane at right angles to the lateral movements of the needle, and means for giving said looper a needle avoiding movement.

A sewing machine including in combi nation, a base, a standard having an overhanging arm, a work support, a yoke located in said standard and extending outwardly into said overhanging arm and downwardly beneath the Work support, a needle bar mounted to reciprocate in said yoke, a needle carried thereby, means connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same and oscillating the yoke, a looper carrier pivoted at the lower end of said yoke, means connected to the looper carrier for causing said carrier to oscillate as the yoke oscillates, means for moving the looper on its carrier and into and out of the needle thread loop, and means in the standard for pivotally supporting said yoke, and means whereby said pivotal support may be adjusted vertically for varying the length of feed.

A sewing machine including in combination, a base, a standard having an overhanging arm, a work support, a yoke located in said standard and extending outwardly into said overhanging arm and downwardly beneath the Work support, a needle bar mounted to reci rocate in said yoke, a needle carried there y, means connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same and oscillating the yoke, a looper carrier pivoted at lower end of s yoke, means connected the carrier .11" causing the carrier to oscillate as the yoke oscillates, means for moving the looper on its carrier and into and out of the needle thread loop, a bracket in said standard having a vertical slot, a supporting sleeve carried in said slot and vertically justable therein, a pivot pin carried by said sleeve for supporting said yoke, said yoke having a slot for the pivot pin where by the pivotal support for the yoke may be raised and lowered without bodily raising and lowering the yoke.

A sewing machine including in combination, a needle, a cooperating looper, yoke supporting the needle and looper, means for pivotally supporting the yoke whereby the needle may be moved laterally while in the material for feeding the same, said pivotal support for the yoke being adjustable vertically for varying the length of the feed stroke of the needle.

A. sewing machine including in combination, a yoke, a needle, a needle bar carrying the needle and reciprocating in said yoke, means connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same and oscillating said yoke, a looper carried by the yoke, means for moving the looper to cause the same to cooperate with the needle, a bracket having a vertical slot, a sleeve adjustable in said slot, a pivot pin for the yoke carried in said sleeve, said yoke having a vertical slot in which the pivot pin may be adjusted whereby the pivotal support may be raised an]? lowered without raising or lowering the yo e.
12. A sewing machine including in combination a yoke, a needle, a needle bar carrying the needle and reciprocating in said yoke, means connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same and oscillating said yoke, a looper carried by the yoke, means tor moving the looper to cause the same to cooperate with the needle, a bracket having a vertical slot, a sleeve adjustable in said slot, said sleeve having means for securing said sleeve in adjusted position, and a pivot pin for the yoke carried by said sleeve.
