To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. JOHNSON, residing at Electra, in the county of Wichita and Sttate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the' following is a specification.
This invention relates to drills, more particularly to the manner of connecting the bit with the collar, chuck or collet of the drill, designed primarily for use in connection with the drilling of oil wells, yet it is to be understood that a drill in accordance with this invention can be employed for any purpose wherein it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, means to so set up a detachable connection between the bit and collar, chuck or collet of the drill whereby the employment of screw threads for such purpose is dispensed with,.under such conditions providing what may be termed a threadless socket bit.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a drill including means to provide for quickly connecting and disconnecting the drill bit to and from the collar, chuck or collet of the drill without the providing of the bit with threads for engagement with the collar, chuck or collet to secure the bit in position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a drill for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eiiicient and convenient in its use, readily assembled and comparatively inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arran ement of parts as hereinafter more speci cally described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring tothe drawings in detail, a drill in accordance with this invention includes a. chuck, collet or collar, referred to hereafter as a collar, and further includes a bit element which is detachably connected with the collar without the employment of screw threads, and' the collar is adapted to be secured to a casing section or other means for rotating the drill.
The collar includes an upper portion 1- and a lower portion 2, thevformer being of materially less thickness than the latter and provided with internal threads 3. The lower part of the inner face of the lower portion 2 of the collar is beveled to form a conoidalshaped socket 4, and the bottom edge of the lower portion 2 of the collar is formed with an annular groove 5.
The beveled part of the lower portion 2 of the collar, is provided with a plurality of transversely extending openings and the number of these openings can be as many as desired, as shown four in number, and arranged equi-distantly apart and which are indicated at 6, and the wall of each of the openings 6 is threaded. The inner face of the beveled part of the lower portion 2 of the collar is formed with a plurality of sockets as indicated at 7 and with` which register the inner ends of the openings 6. There is a socket 7 associated with each of the openings 6. The outer periphery of the beveled part of the lower portion 2 of the collar is provided with a plurality of pockets 8 and with the inner portion of the wall of each pocket 8 beveled as at 9. The pockets 8 register with the openings 6 and the arrangement is such that the number of pockets correspond with the number of openings.
That part of the lower portion 2 of the collar, above the socket 4, provides a water lshaped tan 15 having its base of less diameter than t e diameter of the body portion 13 whereby the latter at its upper end is formed with an annular ledge 16, and

The tang 15, between its transverse center and its upper end, is provided with a conoove 18 in its periphery and said groove as a flat bottom wall 19 and an upwardly extending and outwardly inclined upper wall 20.
The bit element is provided with an axial bore 13 which. extends throughl the -body portion 13 and tang 15 and opens into the water passage 10 when the bit element is secured to the collar.
When the bit element is arranged in position to be `connected with the collar, the groove 18 opposes the sockets 7 and the tang 15 is detachably connected with the collar, through the medium of a plurality of transverselyl extending clamping elements each consisting of a threaded shank 21 having its inner end provided with a clamping head 22 and its outer end with a grooved beveled head 23.
A clamping element is extended through each of the openings 6 and the shank of such element has threaded engagement with the threaded wall of the opening 6. The clamping heads 22 bind against the upper wall 20 ofythe groove and that face of each of the heads 2,2, which binds against the wall 20, is beveled as at 24. The heads 23 are adapted to be seated against the beveled wall portio'ns of the pockets 8 and the grooves in the heads 23 provide means for the convenient adjusting of the clamping ele- AS illustrated, he @01m 2 is' provided with l four openings 6 .and associated with each opening is a clamping element, but if desired two openings 6 may be employed and a corresponding number of clamping elements.
The manner of setting up the bit element with respect to the collar provides for quickly connecting, as well as disconnecting the bit element to and from the collar and the connection between the bit element and collar is set up without the employment of threads on the tang or on the collar, under such conditions the device provides what may be termed a threadless socket bit.
The body portion 13 is illustrated as provided with an annular flange 16, but in lieu thereof independent lugs can be em loyed, two or more, and engage in sockets ibrmed in the lower edge of the collar and when the sockets are employed the annular groove 5 is dispensed with.
From the fore oing description .taken in connection with te accompanying drawings, a drill is set up whereby the bit element is connected with the collar without the employment of interengaging threads and al-` to be understood that changes inthe details of construction can be had without departing from the spirit ofA the invention as' said socket and formed with a peripheral groove having one of the Walls thereof outwardly inclined, and transversely extending clamping elements threadingly engaging with said collar and provided with beveled clamping heads binding against said wall for detachably connecting the bit element with the collar.
2. A drill comprising a collar having a conoidal-shaped socket at its lower end, a bit element provided with a tang extended into said socket and formed with a peripheral groove having one of the walls thereof outwardly inclined, and transversely extending clamping elements threadingly engagin with said collar and provided with beveled clamping heads bindin against said wall for detachably connectlng the bit element with the collar, said collar having its lower edge grooved, and said bit element provided with a flange extending in said oove.

A drill comprising a oo ar having means to provide a conoidal-shaped socket at its lower end, the wall of said socket provided with a plurality of sockets disposed at right angles'with respect to said conoidalshaped socket, lsaid collar further havingv its periphery provided with pockets in alignment with the sockets formed in the walls of said conoidal-shaped socket, said collar further provided with transverse openings leading from said pockets, a bit element with a tang extended into said conoidal-shaped socket and having its periphery provided with a continuous groove with one wall thereof outwardly inclined, and clamping elements includin threaded shanks engaging with the walls o said openings and having their inner ends provided with clamping heads formed with beveled faces binding against said inclined walls thereby connectin said bit element with said collar, said sha s extending through the sockets disposed at right angles with respect to said conoidal-shaped socket, and said shanks having their outer ends provided with heads seating in said pockets.

A drill comprising a collar having means to provide a conoidal-shaped socket at its lower end, the wall of said socket provided with a plurality of sockets disposed at right angles with respect 4to said conoidal-shaped socket, said collar further having its periphery provided with pockets in alignment with the sockets formed in the walls of said conoidal-shaped socket, said 9011er further provided with transverse openings leading from said pockets, a bit element with a tang extended into said conoidal-shaped socket and having its periphery provided with a continuous groove with one Wall thereof outwardly inclined, and clamping elements including threaded shanks engaging with the walls of said openings and having their inner ends provided with clamping heads formed with beveled faces binding against said inclined Walls thereby connecting said bit element with said collar, said Shanks extending through' the sockets disposed at right angles with respect to said colloidal-shaped socket, and said shanks having their outer ends provided with heads seating in said pockets, said bit element provided With an axial bore opening into said collar and said collar provided with means for connecting a bit operating element therewith, said collar having its lower edge grooved, and said bit element provided with a flange extending into the grooved end of the collar.
