To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS Bonn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Brantford, in the county of Brant, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank Cages, of which the following is the specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bank cages and the object of the invention,

is to devise manually controlled means for releasing the shutter which is spring actuated into the closed position in front of the cage for protecting the. occupant from being held up by bank robbers.

A further object is to devise'improved means whereby the raising of the shutter will automatically. actuate releasing means which normally holds bullet proof side curtains for protecting the sides of the cage.

. A still further. object is to devise means whereby the springs which impel the shutter upwardly will act as buflers therefor when the shutter reaches its uppermost position. v

Another object is, to devise improved -means for resetting the shutter when it has been once actuated.

My invention consists of a bank cage constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated.

1 is the cage provided with the usual grids 2. 3 is the shutter which is constructed of ballet resistingmaterial and is adapt- 'to be secured to the posts 5 and provided with lower vertical slots 9 and upper vertical slots 10 in the forward face of such housing.

11 and 12 are respectively upper and lower cylindrical slide blocks adapted to slide in thehousing 8, each upper block 11 provided with a forwardly directed pin 13 extending forwardly through the corresponding slot 10 and each block 12 provided with a similar pin 1 1 extending forwardly through the slot 9. 15 are springs, each secured at its upper end to the block 11 and at its lower end to the block 12. 16 is a rib on the inner face of the bottom of the shutter 3.

17 is a vertically disposed. toothed rack provided on the rear face of the shutter 3 and adapted to engage the pawl 18, pivotally connected to the forward end of the actuating lever 19 which is fulcrumed at 20 in the vertically disposed standard 21 a mounted on the floor of the cage in rear of the shutter 3. 22 is a weight actuated pawl pivotally secured in the standard 21 and adapted to engage the teeth of the rack 17. 23 is a laterally extending bar hinged to the sides of the cage 1 by thehinge 24, said bar 23 having pivotally connected to its forward face the forwardly extending rod 25, which is in' turn pivotally connected at its forward end to the lower end of the pivotally mounted dog 26 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the rack 17. 27 is a laterally extending rod journalled in the bearings 28 on the side posts 5 of the cage, said rod carrying the depending arm 29 which is pivotally connected at its lower end to the rearwardly extending rod 30 journalled in the bearing 31, the rear end of the rod 30 being provided with the actuating lever 32. 33 are brake arms secured intermediately of their length to the rod 27 and their lower ends connected by means of the chains 34 with the dogs 35 which are pivotally mounted on collars 36 on the spring receiving standards, each of said dogs having a stepped shutter engaging face. Upon the shutter being set in the position illustrated in Figure 3 and it being desired to raise the same, the bar23 is kicked by'the occupant of the cage which will push forwardth'e rods 25, thus releasing the dog 26 from the rack and allowing the shutter to be impelled upwardly by means of the springs 15. This is achieved owing to the fact that the springs have been distendedmits the rods to be forced forwardly under the influence of'the springs 4'3, releasing the latches 41 from the eyes 40 and allowing the doors 39 of the side curtain housings {to drop. This releases the curtains 37 and permits them to assume the closed position'illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing.

After the lower edge of the shutter 3 passes up beyond the dog 35,'such dog falls forwardly, thus preventing the shutter falling again intothe open position, untilthe dog'is released.

lever 19 is actuated so that the pawl 18 en gages the teeth of the toothed rack 17 and as "thelever is lifted upwardly the shutter will be correspondingly lowered, the weighted pawl '22 preyenting'retrograde motion of the shutter as the lever is actuated in an upward direction, the leg 46 on the forward end of the lever '19 engaging the lug 47. The leg 46 prevents such pawl 22 from engaging the rack 17 when the lever is in the position illustrated in Figure3. 1 V

1. 3. 4. "In "a "bank cage, the combination with {the front thereof, of a verticallyjslidable bullet proof shutter, *a rack secured to the shutter, 'a lever mounted interiorly of the cage in the vicinity of the rack, and means on the lever for engaging the rack and depressing the shutter down into its normal position, a tension spring, means on the lower end of the spring engaging the shutter upon its being in the normal position, and means on the upper end of the spring for engaging the shutter upon the latter being thrown upwardly.

5. In a bank cage, the combination with the front thereof, of a vertically slidable bullet proof shutter, a rack secured to the shutter, a lever mounted interiorly of the cage in the vicinity of the rack, a pawl mounted on the lever and adapted to engage the rack and depress the shutter into its normal position, a vertical casing, a tension spring mounted therein, upper and lower slide blocks slidable in the casing, lugs on said upper and lower blocks projecting through the slots and slidable therein, a stop secured to the shutter in the vicinity of its lower end, the lug on the lower block adapted to engage the lower edge of the shutter upon its being in the normal position, and the lug on the upper block adapted to engage the said stop upon the shutter being thrown upwardly.

6. In a bank cage, the combination with the front thereof, of a vertically slidable shutter, means for throwing the shutter up into the closed position covering the exposed front of the cage, collapsible bullet proof side curtains normally retained in their folded position, housings normally holding such curtains in their folded position, bottom doors swingably mounted in the housings, eyes on the inner faces of the doors, spring actuated rods slidable in the housings, latches on the rods adapted to engage the said eyes and retain the doors in the normally closed position, and means engaged by the shutter for disengaging the latches from the eyes to allow the curtains to drop into their closed position covering the exposed sides of the cage.

7. In a bank cage, the combination withthe front thereof, of a vertically slidable shutter, means for throwing the shutter up into the closed position covering the exposed front of the cage, collapsible bullet proof side curtains normally retained in their folded position, housings normally holding such curtains in their folded position, bottom doors swingably mounted in the housings, eyes on the inner faces of the doors, spring actuated rods slidable in the housings, latches on the rods adapted to engage the said eyes and retain the doors in the normally closed position, arms pivotally mounted on the front of the cage having their free ends engaging the ends of the rods and retaining the latches in engagement with the eyes, the shutter being designed to disengage the arms from the rods upon its being thrown upwardly and to disengage the latches from the eyes and allow the curtains to drop into their closed position.
