LABELING MACHINE.

To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CHARLES, W. LAKEY and EDWARD L. CRcUoH, citizens of the United States, residing at VVinston-Salem in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labeling Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be va full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a machine for ailixing labels and the like to cartons.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of an improved and simplified character adapted to automatically and successively align the container, apply an adhesive to the container, sever and apply labels supplied to the device in the form of a continuous strip in roll form.
Further objects will appear more clearly in connection with the following detailed description in connection'with the various features of the invention.
The invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Four sheets of drawings accompany this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout.

In accordance with the present invention the adhesive applya suitable table top frame 1 is provided having mounted thereon longitudinally eXtending shafts 2 and 3. Shaft 3 is provided with a pulley 4 1n association with a clutch 5 operated as by hand lever 6 by means of Y which operating power may be applied to the machine as desired. On shaft 2 are pivot-ally mounted levers 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, which extend substantially vertically and are each provided with rollers 12 adapted to contact cam members 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17V mounted upon shaft 3 and angularly disposed with reference to each other so as to operate in succession and in proper predetermined order the levers 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 which levers are normally held with their rollers 12 in engagement with their respective cam members by means of suitable springs 8l, having one end secured to a suitable part of the frame 1, such as bar 82.
Mounted upon the top of frame 1 at the right-hand end thereof, is a plate 23 provided with a bore adapted to receive a plunger 24, provided upon its front end with a Contact member 25 preferably of rubber or some other suitable material and formed adjacent its rear end with a collar 26 between which and plate 23 is secured the com-- pression spring 27 tending normally to retain the plunger 24 in a retracted position. The rear end of plunger 24 is adapted to be engaged by a shoe 29 mounted upon the upper end of lever 7 so that upon the operation of lever 7 by the rotation of cam 13 plunger 24 will be projected forward over the front of frame 1 to engage a container 22 passing before the plunger upon any suitable conveyor as belt 21, to properly position the container on said belt for the succeeding operations.
Adjacent plate 23and on top of the framey 1 are secured two vertical standards 30 adapted to support the adhesive applying mechanism as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. Secured ony the front of standards 30 .adjacent their top is an open-topped container 31 adapted to receive the adhesive fluid 34. Within the container 31. is mounted a roller 32 as upon vshaft 36 and a suitable wiper knife 35 is provided, adapted to remove surplus adhesive from this roller.
Above roller 32 and in contact therewith, a second distributing roller 33 is mounted upon shaft 36 and the two rollers 32 and 33 are rotated invunison but in opposite directions` by means of mesh gears 37 and 37 Ylocated exteriorly of container Power is appliedto rotate the rollers through shaft 36 of roller 38 upon which is mounted a ratchet wheel 38 adapted to be operated by pawl 39, pivoted to one arm 40 of va bell crank 45, the other arm 44 of which is adapted to be engaged by a head 43 projecting laterally from a lever 42 secured to shaft 4l, uponv which the bell arm 45` is pivotally mounted, On shaft is also secured an arm 46 carrying on its outer end la spindle'47 to which spindle is secured a wiper arm 4S provided with a paster foot 49. A pulley 50 is secured to spindle 47 over which passes a belt 5l, which is crossed and then passed over a pulley 52 secured coaxial-ly with shaft 4l but secured against rotation by attachment, as through screws 80tv lone of thevvertical standards BO. At the same time lever 42 secured to shaft 4l will engage arm 44 of bell crank 45, thusV operating'pawl'vt), ratchet wheel 38 and rollers SQand 33 toV expose a fresh supply of adhesive to the returning paster foot. The parts are so arranged and dimensioned that'v in its lowermost position the paster foot will contacta container 22 previously aligned by plunger 24 and apply to a part thereof, a coating of adhesive. y

"This strip is fed downwardly between standards 56 over a guide pulley'Gl and between tension pulleys E-62. Tension pulley 62 ismounted upon ashaft 67, slidably secured inV guides 69 and subject to the tension of a spring or other compression member 70 tending to normally force said roller 62 against roller o2. li rom between these rollers the strip projects downwardly between two spaced guide members GG having its edges guided therein as by grooves 65. Above and immediately adjacent the guide members (5G is secured a knife 64 secured as by part 7 5 to the standard 56, the knife G4 cooperating with a sliding beveled knife part G3 operated by rod 76, which is pivotally connected to lever 9. Beneath the knife edges and between guide members 66 is a plunger 7l' secured to rod 78 pivotally secured to lever l0. The tension roller b2 is positively rotated by means of a ratchet wheel 7l Ysecured on shaft 67, which ratchet wheel is engaged by pawl l2 pivoted to a double armed lever 73, the other arm of which is connected by rod 74 with lever ll.
ln operation cam l5 will operate lever 9, thus operating knife (i3 through rod 'T6 lo sever the portion of the label strip between the guide members GG. At this point cam i6 will operate lever l0 to operate plunger 77, which will push forward the severed label and apply the same to the container 22, previously aligned by plunger 24 and coated with adhesive by paster foot49 as above described.v
(lam 17 in turn operates lever l1 to rotate tension roller G2 and thus feed down the label strip between the guides 66 for a repeat operation,
Various modilications in the" precise form and arrangement of parts will readily suggest themselves to thoseslilled iny the art but within the scope 4of the present invention as claimed.

5. A label feeding severing and applying means comprising standards adapted to support a roll of labels in strip form guide and feed rollers located between the standards to feed the strip downward, spaced guides between the standards to receive the marginal edges of the end of the label strip, shearing means located above said guides, a plunger aixing means reciprocable between said guides and means for operating the feed rollers, shearing means and aifixing plunger in succession in predetermined order.
6. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a shaft extending longitudinally of the frame, a plurality of cams mounted on the shaft in a predetermined angularity relative to each other, a plurality of spring controlled levers vertically mounted on the frame one for each cam and aligning mechanism, adhesive applying mechanism and label feedingv severing and aflixing mechanism mounted on the frame and in association with said levers respectively whereby the rotation of the shaft will operate said levers successively in predetermined order to operate said mechanisms, substantially as specified.
