-it as combined with a waist-belt.
In such drawings, a denotes a snap-hook joined to a pulley, c, by aleather band or connection, 1 1. From the said pulley an arm, 7c, extends downward, and at its lower partis provided with an eye, l. There is lixed to the arm at its middle, or thereabout, a belaying pin or cleat, d, all being constructed and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 2. To the eye l a waist-strap, l1., is to be suspended, .as shown, when the apparatus is in use, the devices represented in Fig. 2 for such purpose being two snap-hooks, al a2, and a connectingrope, e, the lower snap-hook being provided with a swivel, f. A swivel snap-hook suspended from the eye Z will generally answer the purpose as well as the two hooks al, a2,
and rope e.
In Fig. 1 the rope e is fastened at or near its middle to the eye-boltz'inserted inthe window-frame. The upper half of the rope is shown as being led to and tied to a lamp-post. The snap-hook a runs upon this part of the rope, the lower half of the rope being run through the pulley and belayed around the cleat d, and held by the person while in the act of descending.
In Fig. 2 two ropes, c e, are shown as provided with snap-hooks at their upper ends, they being used with the apparatus, as shown in said figure, and substituted for the single rope c, used as represented in Fig. 2.
By means ofthe auxiliary ropee connected with the lamp-post, or any other proper object situated at a distance from the building the descent of the person while escaping from the building on ire'will not be in or :about in a vertical line and close to the building, but in a course inclined to the horizon, so as to carry him away from the building.
I claim as my invention- The snap-hook a, pulley c, arm k, cleat d, and eye l, arranged and combined substantially in the manner as described, and for use with ropes and a waistband or belt, as set forth, the whole constituting a fire-escape, or means of enabling a person to descend to the ground from the window or other part of a building.
