r L. ROBERTS TRUNK LOCK I Filed Jan. 1'? 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG. 4-1.
3 E /1/Wm/ hauls #1 M LI R0664-$3 the casin broken away and shown "in section to il ustrate the lock mechanismfltherein, each end lock embodying a keeper casing 21 secured as at 22 to the outer face 6 of the trunk body 1,. the keeper casing 21 being open at its upper end and having projeeting upwardly from the side walls thereof, inwardly extending. latch lugs 23.-
. The lock casing 24 of the end lock'is secured as at 25 to the trunk cover 2 inalinement? with the keeper casing 21, the lock casing '24 enclosing a pair of latch levers 26 pivotally mounted as at 27 and carrying depending latch heads 28 projecting out- 15 casing 24 with the, latch heads 28 normally separated or spring pressed outwardly by the spring 29 engaging the latch lever 26 below the pivot point thereof .When the 9. trunk lid or cover 2 is moved to a closed position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the latch heads '28 are projected into the adjacent open end of the keeper casing 21 and automatically engage the latch lugs 23 in the keeper casing. 3 w
The releasing means for the latch levers 26 embodies devices associated with the swinging beep and latch levers, a casing 0 30 secured as at 31 to the inner face of 3 ,with the mountingplate 4 of the swinging 'hasp overliesj an opening 32 formed in the front wall of: said cover 'A' pair of bell crank levers 33 is pivotally' supported within the casing'30, the corresponding leg 34 of each bell crank: lever normally traversing 'the wall opening 32 as shown in-Fig.'2 while ;the other leg 35 of each bell crank lever has a relatively long linkconnection -36, that extends through a side opening 37. in the casing 30 with the cam lever 38 pivotally "mounted as at 39 within each end lock casing 24. the connection between the outer ends of the links 36 and the cam 1evers38 hroug'h the slotted opening 41 in the front -w'all of the cover section. The cam lever 38 includes a double cam portion 42 disposed between the upper ends of the latch levers 26fto efiect simultaneous 0p- Wardly of thelower open end of the lock the forward side of the trunk cover 2 alined eluding a pin slidably projected oration thereof. The swinging hasp' 6 carries a finger extension 43 disposed within the mounting plate 4 when the hasp is in a closed position, the finger 43 being projected through the opening 32 in the front wall of the cover when the hasp 6 is swlung upwardly as illustrated in Fig. 5 with the free end of the finger l3 engagin tl1elegs 34- of the bell crank levers 33 or shifting the bell crank levers and links 36 for operating the cam lever 38. It will therefore be seen that when the hasp '6 is elevated after being released from the keeper plate 8, the end locks are automatically releasedand the trunk cover 2 maybe shifted to an open position.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of the invention'asclaimed.
hat is claimed is new is 1. In a trunk lock, a key-operated swinging hasp, end locks including tensioned latch levers and rigid keeper lugs for the latch levers, and means for disengaging the latch levers from the lugs arranged in the path of movement of the hasp.
2. In a trunk lock, a key-operated swinging ha'sp, end locks including tensioned latch ,levers and keeper lugs for the latch levers a finger extension carried by the hasp and link and lever mechanism interposed between the latch levers and swinging hasp adapted to be operated'by the finger extension on the hasp.
3. In a trunk look, a swinging hasp, end locks including t'ensioned latch levers and keeper lugs for the latch levers, a hngcr extension carried by'the swinging hasp. a
lever-cam pivoted between the-latch levers,
bell-cranks pivoted adjacent the hasp and link connections between the lever-cams and beILcranks with one leg of each bell-crank arranged in the path of movement of the hasp finger.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
