Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES JAMES J. CONDON, OF ROBBINSDALE, MINNESOTA.
'DRAPERY HANGER FOR CASEMENT WINDOWS.
Application filed March 6, 1922. Serial No. 541,317.
To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. CoNnoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Robbinsdale, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Drapery Hanger for Casement Tindows, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drapery hangers for windows.
The growing use of French or easement windows, coupled with the usual practice of accompanying the same with drapes of various types, has created a demand for a practical drapery hanger, adapted to swing with a easement, wherebyi the relation between drapes and easements is undisturbed and a unitary effect of the drapes on a series of easements attained, when said easements are closed.
One `object of my invention is to provide a valance hanger for a hinged window adapted to be supported, in part, by vthe window frame and, in part, by the window sash, said hanger serving as an attachment for over-hanging valance sections or drapes and operating to swing said drapes'with the window sash without disarranging the drapes.
' Another' object is to supply an over-drape hanger, as above, said hanger being designed to avoid interference with a curtain or other inner drape on the hinged sash.
` A further object is to supply a device of the present nature for use in connection with each of a series of adjacent windows, whereby outer drapes or valance sections carried thereby produce the effect of a continuous and uninterrupted lambrequin, When the windows are closed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the effect produced by the use of my improved hangers in connection with a series of French or easement windows; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken as on the lines 2-2 of Figs. 1 and 3, said View illustrating particularly the structure of the easement bracket and its attachment to the drape supporting hanger member; Fig. 3 is a sectional r View taken as on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the relation of window frame, hanger and easement, the latter being illustrated in closed position; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, except that the easement is shown in open position; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 and portrays an alternate form of my improvement, said view being taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6 and Fig. G is a view similar to Fig. 3, the same being taken on the line 6.-6 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, (Fig. 1), I have illustrated a common arrangement of French windows including frames 10, and easements 11 hinged in folding pairs. I have also shown one arrangement of hangings for such windows. These hangings include valance sections 12 and lapping pleats 13 associated therewith and producing the effect of a continuous lambrequin over-hanging the several easements. A hanger, supplied for each easement or sash 11, include-s a hanger member A and a bracket B. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the hanger member A comprises a cornice board L4 having a spacer block 15 at one end thereof, said block being attached to the frame 1() by means of a hinge 16. In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the hanger member A comprises a bar 17 pivoted at one end on a hinge clip 18 secured to the window frame 10, the margins of said bar 17 being turned on the same side thereof to reinforce the bar and to form opposed ways 19 for a purpose soon to appear. The bracket B includes an arm having an anchoring section 20 designed to be attached by screws, as at 21, to the free side of a easement 11. An inclined section 21 reaching upwardly and outwardly from the section 2() joins a reach 22 parallel with said anchoring section 20. A rest 23, turned outward at right angles from said reach 22, forms a mounting` for a block 24 swiveled horizontally thereon. Said arm of said bracket B is shaped, as above described, to reach the hanger member A and to clear under-drapes, such as roller curtains 25 and hangings 2G. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the block 24 has an opening 24a therein to slidably receive a rod 27 secured to the inner side of the cornice board 14. In the form shown in Fig. 5 said block 24 has opposed flanges 25 turned back therefrom to it within the ways 19 in the bar 17 and form a sliding connection between the bracket B and said bar. The oornice board 14 supplies a mounting for the valance sections 12 and also for the pleats 13 overlapping the joints between said sections. rIhe rod 27 su 3 `vlies a mountin T for a drape 28. In the various hangings employed in connection with windows of the present type, the pivotal axis of the hanger member A is seldom, it' ever, placed in alignment with the axes o the hinges 29 of its companion easement 11. The bracket `B,.mounted on the free side ot' a easement 11 and joined with the free end ot' a hanger member A, swings said hanger member with the Casement, the sliding, swiveled connection formed by the block 24 compensating for the various angular relations between the easement and hanger member, whereby said members are free to swing upony their respectivek pivots.
Where a pair of easements, ora series thereof, is employed, a like Series of hangers is used, saidhangers being arranged in alignment so that the free ends thereotl meet to correspond with the meeting free sides of the easements (Fig. 8). With such an arrangement of hangers, various decorative and unitary effects may be produced by suspending Valance Sections from the various hangers.
Changes in the specifieform of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing fromthe spirit of my invention.
I'laving described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is:
1. The combination with a window frame and a sash hinged horizontally thereon, ot a cornice board correspondingly hinged on the frame and overreaching said sash, a rod on the inner side of the cornice board and a compensating bracket. supplying a, tie between the sash and cornice board and serving to support the tree end of the latter, said bracket including an arm anchored at .its lower end on the sash, also a block swiveled to turn horizontally on the upper end ot said arm, said block having a bore therein for slidably receiving said rod.y the 'horizontal pivoting of the block providing for free sliding movements of the saine on the rod without the necessity of play between said parts.
2. The combination with a window frame and a sash hinged horizontally thereon` of a hanger member correspondingly hinged on said trame, a compensating bracket supplying a tie between the sash and hanger member and serving to support the tree end of the latter, said bracket including an arm adapted to be anchored at its lower end to the sash, alsoa block pivoted horizontally at the upper end of said arm, the block having a close litting slidable connection with the hanger member, the pivoting ot Said block horizontally providing for free sliding movements between the same and said hanger member without binding.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
