Description
.|.Y S. EGGLESTN.
Shaft-Hangers. 4NUSOMY, Patented May-19,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE SCOTT EGGLESTON, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT. IN SHAFT-HANGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,947, dated May 19, 1874 application filed April 17, 1374.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE ScoTT EeeLEs= TON, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Device for Shafts, Suc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it pertains- The lower portion B of the journal-box B is constructed with an inclosed box or cavity, D, which iits into a recess, A, in the shaft-han ger A. This box or cavity D may, if preferred, be constructed in one piece with the lower half of the journal-box B, or it may be made of separate parts, as desired. E is the at cap-p1ate of said cavity, provided with the wick-tube d and small holes or openings d. F is an oilsupply tube or passage leading into the oil-cavity D.
The top section of the journal-box B is removed, and oil supplied to the oil-e. vity D through the supply-tube F. The wick (one or more may be used) in the wick-tube d of the cap-plate E, by capillary attraction, draws the oil from the cavity D, and distributes it over the wearingsurfaces of the journal and axle. Any surplus oil in the journal-box, by the pressure of the shaft upon it, is caused to flow back into the oil-cavity through the small holes or openings d in the capplate E 5 or any oil that may be carried up by the revolving of the shaft escapes between the parts of the journal-box, and is returned to the oil-cavity through the supply-pipe F, this supply pipe or passage being always placed on the proper side of the shaft, so as to be in a position to receive any oil that is brought up by the shaft` as it revolves.
By this arrangement herein described the journals of shafts, &c., are thoroughly and equally supplied with a lubricant, and the escape of oil from the ends or sides of the journal-box is prevented, consequently obviating the necessity of a drip-cup, and the parts are always kept much cleaner and in better working order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, Vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the lower section of a journal-box of a shaft-hanger, the oil-cavity D, fiat cap-plate E, wick-tube d, and lateral openings d', substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of April, 1874.
JESSE SCOTT EGGLESTON. [L.
