j Application led June 2.5, 1923. Serial No. 647,707.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERIC MICHAEL DE SHERBININ, a British subject, residing at the f' city 0f Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and `,exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the construction of a splash proof ca'binet in which one or more streams of water are discharged under pressure against its contents and which is formed with an opening for access to its interior closed by a sliding sash door that will prevent the discharge finding an outlet through the opening or around its edges. v
The preferred type of door comprises a It substantially rectangular frame consisting of two spaced vertical members each having a double rabbet adjacent to and parallel with its inner edge and two spaced horizontal members located one at the top and the other near the bottom of, andintegral with, the Vvertical members and `inthe same plane as the vertical parts of the inner rabbets; The
. panel contacts the inner rabbets and the surfaces of the horizontal members adjacent to their inner edges and this panel is held in position by panel holding membershattached in the outer rabbets, overlying the side edges of the panel and having panel supports at their lower ends engaging its bottom edge, and by a cross piece contacting the inner surfaces of the outer rabbets, extending between the vertical members, and covering the top edge of the panel and having an outturned offset extending to the top horizontal member. j
One or. more spacers may be inserted between this cross piece and the top horizontal member above the top edge of the panel to hold them in spaced relation for "the entry of the panel between them which is preferably transparent and removable and replaceable.
The inner surface of the frame is provided with a rabbet at its lower edge to lill the gap `or space at` the bottom of the lower horizontal member between the lower. ends of` the vertical members and thisrabbet has a ver tical wall extending upward to, and contact-,
of the panel and the top of the lower horizontal member is an apron having `its bott-om edge seated in the bottom rabbet.
In the drawings z- Fig. l is an elevational view of a door constructed in accordance With this inven- Like characters of reference refer to like j parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The door consists of a substantially rectangular frame composed of two spaced parallel vertical members l formed with inner and outer rabbets 2`and 3, respectively along their inner edges and two spaced horizontal members 4, 5, located one at the top and the other at the bottom of the vertical members extending between, and in the same vertical plane as, the inner rabbets 2. The door is preferably constructed of metal and the vertical horizontal members are integral with the vertical members.l The panel 6 which is preferably of glass, contacts the inner surfaces of the inner rabbets 21 and the inner surfaces of the top and lower horizontal members 4 and 5, adjacent to their inner edges. Seated in the outer rabbets 3, and se-` cured to the frame, is a cross piece 7 parallel to and corresponding in depth to the top horizontal member 4, and this cross piece overlies the upper part of the panel 6 and covers its top edge. 'Ihe top edge of the cross piece 7 is formed with an out-turned offset 8 which contacts the inner surface of the top edge of the top horizontal member 4c, and interposed between the cross piece 7 and the top horizontal member 4L is a spacer 9 placed slightly above the top edge of the panel 6. Seated in, and parallel with, the outer rabbets 3 are panel holding members j v secured at their upper ends tothe frame and having at their Vlower ends panel supports 1l which engage the bottom edge of the panel 6. The top edges of the panel holding members 10 are in Contact with the bottom edge of the cross piece 7 and the panel supports 1l are slightly below the top edge of the bottom horizontal member 5.
The lower ends of the panel holding mem#r bers l0 are free to `move a limited distance from the outer rabbets 3 for the removal and replacement' of the panel so` that in the event 'of' damage to the panel it can be removed and replaced by another without the door having to be taken apart. The width of the panel holding members. 10 is equal to the combined width of the inner and outer rabbets 2 and 3; this being suflicient to provide the panel holding-members with a contacting surface which completely covers the side edges ofthepanel.
Fastened' to the vertical members near their side edges are guide pieces 1S extendinglfrom the top' tothe bottom ofthe door andbeyond these guide piecesv the vertical members are entered in channelled slideways 20 formed in the `vertical sides of the door opening 21. These slideways are so located that the vertical and bottom edges of the door are with-in the plane of the cabinet front. l/Vith this construction the water strilring'against the interior of the door and the cabinet front drains from the top interiorly of the door downwardly past the bottom edge ofthe door opening, and the slides and slideeways prevent the water finding an outlet between the vertical sides of the doorl andthe vertical sides of the faces of the inner rabbets and the surfaces of the horizontal members adjacent to their inner edges, panel holding members secured in the outer rabbets overlying the side edges of the panel and having panelsupports at their lowerpend's engaging the bottom edge of the panel, and across piece, contacting the inner surfaces'of the' outer rabbets, extending between the vertical members and covering the topI edge of the panel.
k2. In a cabinet, a sliding sash door com'- prising two spaced vertical` members each having, a double rabbet adjacent to and paralllel with its innerv edge, two4 spaced horizontal members locatedvone at the' top and the other near the'bottomvof, and in`v tegral with, the vertical members and in the same plane as thel vertical surfaces of the inner rabbetsa rabbet at the bottom of the lower one of the horizontal membersextending to, andin thel same plane as the bottom of, the vertical members, a panel contacting the surfaces of the inner rabbets and the surfaces of the horizontal members adjacent to their" inner edges, panel holding membersl secured in the outer rabbets overlying lthe side edges of the panel and having panel :supports at their lowerends engaging the' bottom-edge of the panel,-a cross piece, contacting-the inner surfaces ofy the outer rabbets, extending between the vertical members covering'the top edgeof the panel and having an outfturned oifset extending to the tophorizontal member.
3. In a cabinet, a sliding-sash door comprising-two spaced vertical members each' having a double rabbet adjacent'V tov and' bottom of, thel` vertical-"members, a panel contactingthe surfaces `of the inner-- rabbets and the-*surfaces ofthe horizontal membersY adjacent to their inner edges, panel holding members secured in the outer rabbets .oven lying the side edges of the' paneli and having panel supports atl their" lower endsengaging the bottom edge ofthe panel, a cr'ossjpiecet memberscovering tlie top edge of thepanel and having" anout-turned Aoffset extending to the top horizontal member, and a' spacer 1,25 contacting `the innerv surface of thev outer` rabbetfs, `extending' between the vertical` inserted between the cross piece and top horizontal member abo-ve the top edge of the panel.
4. In a cabinet, a sliding sash door comprising two spaced vertical members each having a double rabbet adjacent to its inner edge, two spaced horizontal members located one at the top and the other at the bottom of, and integral with, the vertical members and in the same plane as the vertical surfaces of the inner rabbets, a cross piece extending between the vertical members near their lowerends covering the bottom edge of the lower one of the horizontal members and having at its bottom edge a rabbet in the same plane as the vertical members, a panel contacting the surfaces of the inner' rabbets andthe surfaces of the horizontal members adjacent to their inner edges, panel holding members secured in the outer rabbetsy overlying the side edges ofthe panels and having panel supports at their lower ends engaging the bottom edge of the panel, a crosspiece contacting the innersurfaces of the outer rabbets, extending be tween the vertical members coveringthe top of the panel, and an apron inserted between the panel and lower horizontal members having its bottom edge seated on the rabbet of the cross p-iece and extending between the inner rabbets of the vertical members. In a cabinet, a sliding sash doorv comprising two spaced 'vertical members each having a double rabbet adjacent to its inner edge, two spaced horizontal members located one at the top and the other at the bottom of and integral with the vert-ical members and in the same plane as the-vertical surfaces of the inner rabbets, a cross piece extending between the vertical memf bers near their lower ends covering the bot toni` edge of the lower one of the horizontal Vmembers and having at its bottom edge a rabbet in the same plane as the vertical members, a panel contacting the surfaces of the inner rabbets andthe surfaces of the horizontal members adjacent to their inner edges, panel holding members secured in the outer rabbets overlying thev side edges of the panels and having panel supports at their lmember and cross piece.
6. In a cabinet, a sliding sash door comprising two spaced vertical members each having a double rabbet adjacent to its inner edge, two spaced horizontal members located one at the top and the other at the bottom of and integral with the vertical members` and in the same plane as the vertical surfaces of the inner rabbets, a cross piece extending between the vertical members near their lower ends covering the bottom edge of the lower one of the horizontal members and having at its bottom edge a `rabbet in the same plane as the vertical members, a panel contacting the surfaces of the inner rabbets and the surfaces ofthe horizontal members adjacent to their inner edges, panel holding members secured in the outer rabbets overlying the side edges of the their lower ends engaging the bottom edge of the panel, a cross piece, contacting the inner surfaces of the outer rabbets, extending between the vertical members covering the top of the panel, an apron covering the bottom edge of the panel seated on the rabbet of the cross piece and extending between the inner rabbets of the vertical members, a spacer between the top horizontal member and cross piece, and an outwardly turned off-set at the top edge of the top cross piece engaging the top horizontal member.
