Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. BENNETT,
' a citizen of the United States, and resident of Mount Morris, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dispensing Device, of
which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
My invention relates to a dispensing device, primarily adapted for use in connection with the vending of tooth picks, but not necessarily limited to this particular adaptation, and the present invention is particularly designed to provide improvements over my prior Patent #1545984.
I have found in connection with the structure presented by my previous patent that in certain instances upon the parts being operated, an article within the'same has not been vended. Thus my present invention aims to provide certain construc tion which will at all times insure the dispensing of one of the articles contained within the device even although the receiving compartment of the device should contain .but a few of the articles to be dispensed.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character stated in which the construction of the operating mechanism will be greatly simplified, so
device embodying my improved construction, and having certain of its parts broken away to illustrate the underlying construction. v I

Referring now more particularly to Figure 1 it will be seen that as in my previous patent aforereferred to, that my invention embodies the use of a pair of spaced side plates 10, constituting supports for a drum 11, the latter being rotatably disposed upon a shaft 12 extending between the plates 10. Contrary to my prior construction, however it: will be noted that the spring 13 has j one of its ends attached to the shaft 12,-its opposite end being attached to the portion of the drum 11, so that the drum will normally tend to assume a fixed position, F urther a gear wheel 141s attached to the (1111111,;
and the teeth of this wheel are engaged by the teeth of a bar 15 having a portion 16 at its upper end. By this construction it will be understood that upon the bar 15 being depressed by an operator pressing against the portion 16 thatthe gear ll and consequently the drum 11 will be caused c,
filling the same, and it will be noted, attention being particularly invited to Figures 3 to 5 that inwardly extending panels 18 are providedwithin the drum these panels,
in the embodiment illustrated being positioned adjacent the edgesof the closure 17 Also a trough member 19 is providedadjacent an opening 20 inthe face ofthe drum, and this trough member is formed with a slot 21 for a purpose hereinafter specified.
It will be admitted without question that when the interior of the drum is almost come pletely filled with tooth picks 22, or other articles to be dispensed, that upon the drum being moved to the position illustrated in;. v
Figure 4 and subsequently returned to the position shown in Figure 5 thatone or more of these elements will be retained; by the trough member 19. However, upon just a few of these elements remaining in thedrum it willbe understood that the likelihood of these elements lodging within the trough member is reduced. 1? or this reason the panels 18 areprovided, and attention is invited'to the fact that when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 3 that any elements to be dispensed, positioned within the drum, and any within the trough of the member 19 will be found in the base of the drum; or be deflected into this part by means of the uppermost panel as in Figure 8. Now upon the drum being rotated incident to the actuation of the bar 15, and upon the parts assuming the position shown in Figure l the lowermost panel in Figure 3 will assume the position at which it is up sermon, and accordingly any elements such as tootlipicks will be deflected in this in stance by this latter panel in the direction of the arrows, towards the trough member 1 9, so that when the drum returns to its normal position the said trough member will contain one or more tooth picks as has been shown in Figure 5;
Thus the purpose of the panels 18 is that of initially concentrating all of the tooth picks or other elements to one position, and
sifbsequently deflecting these elements towards the trough member thus overcoming the objection incident to the failure of the gripping member to present one of the elements to be dispensed.
I Referring now to this gripping member it will be 'seen' that, as in my prior application, the same preferably includes a pair of jaws 23 mounted upon a shaft 2%, but in this instance the jaws are caused to nor m'ally engage each other by means of a spring 25 cooperating with one of the same. arise this shaft is positioned at a point at which the outer ends of the jaws 23 may be ii'iOVGfl to a position at which they will lie adjacent the outer end of the trough memher as in Figure l, and the slot 21 in the trough member 19 is provided for the purpose of accommodating these members. Further an opening 20 in the face of the drum is normally closed by a spring pressed plate 26 and this latter element is also formed with a slot 27 so that when the opening 20 is closed the members 23 may swingto a position at which they are capable of engaging the elements within the trough of the member 19 it being noted in this connection that the uppermost of the ]IW members 23 is formed with a shoulder '28 which prevents its extending into the 1n terior of the drum incident to the fact that this shoulder Wlll engage the outer face of the drum and preclude the member from swmm further in an inward direction.
Finally with a view of providing operating means for both jaw members and the plate, it will be seen reference being had to Figure 6 that the inner face of one of the plates ll) is formed with a groove 29, and that the shaft 2 t carries an ear 30 provided with a pin 51 which rides within this groove. Also a shaft is attached to the panel 26, and a trip member 33 is secured to this shaft, and the movement of this trip is limited by a pin Si l carried by one of the side Walls of the drum.
Now assuming that the drum is rotated by means of the bar l5, in the manner aforeo 'bed, it will be appreciated, primarily, that with the turning of the drum that the pin will ride within the groove 29 and due to the oliset outer portion of the latter this operation will immediately result in the shaft being turned until the jaw members 23 assume the position shown in Figure 5, and finally a position at which the shoulder28 of the outermost of these members, rnwardly into the interior of the drum, to the point indicated in Figure, l. The elements 22 to be dispensed will be simultaneously actuated in the manner aforementioned so that they will lie in the trough l9, and it will be noted that, upon further reference to .l igure e, in this position the inner jaw member will have passed through the slot 21 and to a point beyond the trough member 19 so that the innermost element lies between the outer ends of the jaws. Upon the drum now returning to its normal position, it will be seen that at the beginning of the offset portion of the groove 29, the shaft will be actuated to permit the jaw members to grip any element extending between their outer ends, as in Figure 5, and upon the continuanceof this rotation the jaw members will swing upwardly to the position indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, at which one of the elements is presented to the user. it is to be understood that simultaneously with the outward swii'iging on the part of t] e j aw members that the pin 35 a .ed to the inner face of one of the side walls 10 engages the trip 33 and swings the same so that the shalt 32 and consequently the plate are rocked to permit the passage of the element 22 through the space This operation may be continued any number of times, and it will be understood that the function of the parts will be repeat ed upon each operation, and thus it will be understood that all of the objects set forth in the preamble of this specification have been accomplished and that numerous modi lications of structure might readily be re sorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims; which are:
l. A. dis'aensing device including a rotatable drum, a trough member within said .drum, means for removing elements to be disposed within said trough member, and means projecting radially inward of said drum for deflecting elements within said drum towards said trough member.
2. A dispensing device including arotatable drum, a trough member within said drum, a pair of jaws independent of said trough for removing elements to be disposed within said trough member, means for defleeting elements within said drum towards said trough member upon said drum being rotated.
8. A dispensing device including a rotatable drum, a trough member within said drum, jaws for removing elements to be disposed within said trough member associated with said drum, means projecting radially inward within said drum for initially deflecting the element to be dispensed, to the base portion thereof, and subsequently to said trough member upon said drum being rotated.
a. A dispensing device including a rotatable drum, a trough member within said drum, jaws for removing elements to be disposed within said trough member, and inwardly extending panels within said drum and adapted to dispose said elements within the path of travel of said trough member.

A dispensing device including a rotatable drum, a trough member within said drum, means for removing elements to be disposed within said'trough member, and inwardly extending panels within said drum, said panels being spaced from each other and from said trough member and adapted to dispose said elements within the path of travel of said trough member.

A dispensing device including a pair of spaced side walls, one of said sidewalls being formed with a groove having an olfset end portion, a receptacle positioned between said side walls, a trough associated with said receptacle means adapted to co-operate with said trough for removing elements to be dispensed therefrom, and means connected to said first named means, and cooperating with said groove to cause an actuation of said dispensing means.
7. A dispensing device including a pair of spaced side walls, one of said side walls being formed with a groove having an offset end portion, a receptacle positioned between said side Vv'tlllS, a trough associated with said receptacle, means adapted to cooperate with said trough for removing ele ments to be dispensed therefrom, a pin connected to said means, said pin riding within said groove, whereby upon said receptacle being moved with respect to said groove, said means will be operated.
8. A dispensing device including a ,pair of spaced side walls, one of said side walls bewithin said supporting means, means at tached to said receptacle and co-operating with said supporting means for dispensing elements within said receptacle, a trough member fitting said dispensing elements and means for positively moving said receptacle and means for automatically returning said receptacle to its normal position.

A dispensing device including a drum formed with an opening, a trough member positioned adjacent said opening, said trough member being formed with a slot, a panel normally closing said opening, said panel being also formed with a slot substantially in line with said first named slot, spaced side walls, said receptacle being movablymounted between said side walls, means for moving said drum positively in one direction, a shaft secured to said panel, a trip associated with said shaft, a second shaft, jaw members carried by said second shaft, one of said side walls being formed with a groove having an off-set end portion, an ear attached to said second shaft, a pin carried by said ear, and in sliding engagement with said roove, the innermost of said jaw members normally passing through said slots, a shoulder associated with one of said jaw members and adapted to engage the exterior face of said drum to prevent the movement of said member beyond a predeterminedposition, and upon said trough member, a pin carried by one of said side walls, and adapted to cooperate with said trip, and means for positively moving said drum.
