Description

G. W. RIGHTER.
Gas-Bracket Match-Safes.
Patented May 12, 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT lIN GAS-BRACKET MATCH-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
150,892, dated May 12, 1874; application filed March 20,1814.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RIGHTER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Bracket Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure lis a front elevation of my improved match-safe in position. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views of modifications of my invention.
My invention has relation to that class of match-safes which form a part of, or attachment to, gas-fixtures on the Walls of dwelling houses and other structures.
The object of' my invention is to provide a match safe or holder of this description, which can be readily cleaned or emptied of broken matches, match ends, and other debris. A further object of my invention is to make provision for the replacement of the striker or roughened plate on which the matches are made to ignite by friction.
The nature of my invention'consists in the peculiar and novel construction of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, having reference particularly to making the match holders and striker removable from the plate or bracket on which they are supported.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A shows the metallic disk or Washer, usually employed to conceal the fixture, joint, or end of the gas-pipe proceeding from the Wall. This disk is extended, as shown at B, forming a plate or bracket, to Which are secured the match holders or receptacles U C. These holders consist of boxes of any suitable shape, and of any required size, iitting in guides b b, so that they may be readily slided out and inverted for the purpose of removing any accumulation of dust, broken matches, Soc. D
shows the striker or roughened plate, which, like the boxes C C, is made removable from the bracket B, sliding in guides b1 b1, in order that it may be replaced by a new'one when its surfaces become smootliened by long usage.
A modiication of the invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, wherein the plate B and disk A are made separate and independent, the former being provided with arms B B which pass up back of the latter, and are bent or hooked over it, as shown at c. This modification is intended for adaptation to xtures already Y supplied with the disks or Washers A, but Which lack a match-holder.
The disk and plate formed in one piece make a device intended principally forapplication to new houses, and will be attached just before or at the time the gas-fixtures are put in.
A further modification of this match-safe may be made for cases Where no gas -xtures are employed, as in housesin the country.
The disk or Washer A maybe dispensed with,
and an extension of any suitable kind provided and furnished With an opening` to hang on a hook or nail. The safe may also, in this case, for security, be made fast to the Wall, the arrangement already described permitting the removal of either box for the discharge or ejectment of its contents. This modification is illustrated in Fig. 5, wherein the guides for the striker-plate and for the match-holders are made in one piece each, as shown at b2 in said ligure.
NVhat I claim as my inventionis- In a gas-bracket matchsafe, the combination, with the vertical plate B, of the flanges b b b1 bl for receiving the removable boxes and striker-plates, substantially as specified. M74In"testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day o March, 187 4.
GEORGE V. RIGHTER.
