T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that EDGAR L. TNoun', a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, has invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in lelders Face Shields, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in face shields for arc Welders, and has for its primary object to provide a face shield of strong7 substantial and dura-ble construc-v tion and which is adapted to be supported from the hand of the user when actively e'mployed in shielding the face.
Another Object of the invention resides in a welders face shield which is formed essentially from a single blank of fibrous material, said blank being cut and bent in a peculiar manner so thatthe body produced thereby will be of hollow pyramidal form, and to rovide in conjunction with the smaller endj of the body a vision frame whichY contains a substantially translucent panel and by means of whichmore or less restricted vision through the shield is obtainable. y l
A further object ofthe invention resides in forming the vision frame in Asuch manner that the transparent or translucent panel positioned therein may be readily removed from its applied orfoperative l'ao'sition'and yet when within the' fra/me, means are provvided for retaining"r thevpanel inv a secured and positivemanner and free from the possibility of Vaccidental displacement.

The present invention, therefore, provides a shield particularly adapted for this purpose, and one which 'is light in weight, easy` to manipulate and Yof such character as to thoroughly protect the face of the'user.
To this end, my improved shield Ais formed to comprise a hollow ysubstantially frustopyramidal shaped body l. This body is preferably formed from a sheet of fibrous material so as to possess lightness in weight considerable strength and durability and to act as an insulator against the passagecpof electrical current. As shown in Figure l, this body is formed from a'single lblank of sheet material, which blank is substantially hexagonal in form and ,has a substantially triangular portion 2 cutl out thereof toy produce the outwardly diverging edges'A 3. Also, the central portion of the blankl is out out to produce a central opening 4:, the function of which will develop hereinafter. The outer margins of the body 1 after the' elimrnation of the portion 2', produce a five sided figure, and the edges ofthe openings* are also similarly shaped to conform [relatively in position and length tofsaid outer edges.
t After the formation of the blank thus described the body maybe slightly dampened by being left in a relatively moist place which renders the body more or less plastic and capable of being bent. `When the de sired degree of plasticity has been reached the blank is folded along the dotted lines 5 disclosed in 1ligure l until the edges 3 are arranged in parallel o Terlapping relations, whereby by so bending and drawing the blank a body will be produced of sub* stantially hollow frusto-pyramidal formation, which will be of suflicient area and proportions to encase the face and to there by protect the latter in a manner to be hereinafter fully developed. The edges 3 are united and rigidly secured by passing` rivets or the like 6 tierethrough, in order that the rivets may be interiorly clinched so as to hold said edges together and thereby retain the permanent form of the body 1.
Then the edges 3 are secured together in the manner above related the opening l will be of substantially rectangular configuration and to the edges of this opening a metallic frame 9 is secured. As shown in Figures 3 and 4L the frame is formed to comprise a marginal flange 10. Vwhich is riveted or otherwise secured as at 11 to the margins of the opening 1, hence, through -the provision of the rivets 11 or their equivalents the frame 9 will be permanently secured to the body 1 in contiguous relationship with the opening 4f. The frame is provided interiorly with a lens chamber 12 having inwardly projecting and spaced side walls 13 and a surrounding outer wall 111, the side walls 13 being relatively narrow in order that the same will not obstruct vision through the opening 4 or through the frame 9 generally. Positioned within the chamber 12 is a translucent lens or vision plate 15, which is preferably formed from darkly colored glass and by being` of this formation the same will serve to effectively preclude the injurious rays emitting from the Welding operation from injurious Contacting or engaging the eyes of the user.
The panel or plate 15 is renfiovably received within the chamber 12. This is accomplished by forming another of the outer walls 14 of the chamber with slots 15 through which the plate 15 may be passed when being positioned into or removed from the chamber. Then, to prevent accidental removal or dislocation on the part of the plate, said chamber is provided with one or more lea-f springs 17 which press centrally upon the upper and lower edges of the plate 15 and thereby serve to force the latter normally into-seated engagement with the inner of the side walls 13. However, when it is desire-d to remove the panel 15, pressure is applied from the inside of the shield, which has the effect of compressing` the spring 17 so that the panel as a whole may be readily slipped through and. out of the slot 16. By virtue of this construction it will be apparent that quick repairs may be made in the shield in the event of injury to the frangible vision plate, and similarlys adjustment may be made vby employing panels of varying degrees of transparency and color in order that the shield may be adapted to suit the particular tastes and requirements of varying users or to varying conditions of use.
The frame is provided in this instance with a depending stud 18 the upper portion of which terminates in an annular shoulder 19. A hollou7 handle member 20 is adapted to be inserted upon the stud 18 and is forced upwardly upon the latter until its upper edge seats upon the shoulder 19. A rivet or bolt 21. is then passed through the handle and the stud for the purpose of rigidly and firmly securing said handle member in connection with the shield as a whole. The handle member is preferably formed from the same material as the body 1 and hence is a non-conductor of heat and electricity. By its location the handle member may be conveniently grasped by the user so that the shield may be manipulated with a considerable degree of facility and convenience so that the same may be quickly laid aside when not in active use.
1n view of the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings it will be apparent to those versed inthe art that a face shield has been provided of a practicable, efficient and substantial nature and one which may be used for a considerable period of service. It will be apparent that the formation of the body 1 from a single blank of sheet material will result in considerable economy from a standpoint of production and that by cutting the blank in the manner described the hollow frusto-pyramidal formation of the body can readily be produced The removable construction of the lens plate 15 also furnishes another desirable feature in that quick repair and adjustments may be secured. Then. by the provision of the handle 2O all straps and other harness that have been heretofore employed in devices of this character are eliminated, and said handle thus enables the shield to be handled in a practical and convenient manner so that loss of time hitherto largely involved in the use of a face shield will be reduced to a minimum.
In view of the foregoing description it is thought that the operation and construction of the present invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and therefore a more extended explanation has been accordingly omitted.
