To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. T omas, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Braintree, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Corded Tape to Edges of Shoe Uppers, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for applying a corded tape to the edge of shoe uppers and the like, and has for its object the production of mechanism in which a tape'and cord may be simultaneously fed to a folding device in which a narrow strip of the tape may be folded over the cord onto a wider portion of the tape and secured thereto by a row of stitches,which stitches at the same time will unite the tape to said upper.

The invention further consists in means whereby said guide may be moved out of alinement with said support to facilitate the insertion of said tape and cord, first in said guide and then through the opening in said support.
The invention further consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily byreference to the description of the drawings and to the claims-to be'hereinafter given.

The part 17 of the guide has a tube 23 extending therethrough, the projecting end of which is positioned in the opening 22 and is inclined toward the outer wall thereof.
The tube 23 is adapted to receive a cord 24, which is to be enclosed within a fold 25 of a tape 26. p
This member 17 has its outer end wall 2'? so shaped in conformity with the inner wall of the flange 21 that a curved passage will be formed into which the tape 26 is adapted to be fed.
The opposite end of the member 17 is provided with a slot 28 in which are positioned the headed screws 29 threaded to the member 16.
By loosening the screws 29, the member 17 may be adjusted relatively to the member 16 so as to accommodate the passage in the guide 16, 17 to different widths of tape 26.
As the tape 26 is fed through the passage in the guide 16, 17, a narrow portion 30 thereof will be folded over to form the fold 25, and as the cord 24 is being fed simultaneously toward this fold 25, it will be positioned in said fold 25 as the tape 26 moves outwardly from the opposite end of said guide passage.
The bracket 14 has a lateral shelf to which is secured a work support 31 consisting of a U-shaped plate, beneath which is disposed a plate 32 having slots 32 in the inner end thereof, through which slots extend the headed screws for securing the U-shaped plate to the bracket 14. The inner end of the plate32 is provided with a flange 33 by which the plate 32 may be adjusted relatively to the U-shaped plate 31 when the screws 33 are loosened.
The outer end of the plate 32 forms, with the inner wall of the U-shaped bend of plate 31, a slot 34 through which the folded tape 26, with the cord 24 in its fold 25, is fed toward the needle 11, which is adapted to unite the edge of the folded portion 30 to the body portion of the tape 26, with the cord 24 in the fold 25 thereof.
Simultaneously with the feeding of the I i tape 26 and cord 24, an upper 35 of a shoe is fed toward the needle 11, while resting, inside up, upon the upper face of the U- v shaped member or work support 31.
Consequently, the same stitches which unite the fold 25 to the body portion of the tape 26 at the same time unite the tape 26 to the edge of the upper 35.
The edge of the upper 35 while feeding, bears against a shoulder 36 on a gage 37, adjustably mounted on the barrel 10, so that the folded tape 26 is secured a uniform distance from the edge of the upper.
This gage 37 has a slot 38 in its opposite end through which the clamping screws 39 extend into the barrel 10.
When at the beginning of the operation, it is necessary to insert the tape 26 into its passage in guide 16, 17, and the cord 24 into the tube 23, the member 16 is moved downwardly about its pivot 15 so that the passage and tube will be out of alinement with the slot 34 in the work support 31, thus facilitating the insertion of the tape 26 and cord 24 and permitting the ends thereof to be pulled through the passages therefor.
After sufficient lengths of tape and cord have been pulled, through the guide 16, 17, these ends are then inserted into the slot 34 in the work support 31, the member 16 being at this time in its lower position, giving free access to the slot 34 of the work support 31.
An opening 40 in the work support 31 is provided, through which a suitable tool may be inserted to assist in feeding the tape through the slot 34 in said work support 31.
The ends thus inserted are then positioned beneath the presser foot 12 and feed foot 13, and the subsequent operation of the sewing machine will then cause the tape 26 and cord 24 to be continuously drawn from the sources of supply.
By means of this mechanism, the tape 26 may be folded with a cord 24 in its fold 25, and then at one operation the folded portion may be secured to the body of the tape 26 and also to the upper 35.
A great saving in time is made by simultaneously performing all these operations, and a great advantage is gained inasmuch as no adhesive is required to retain the parts in position until the upper is finally finished.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood readily without further description.
Having thus described my invention. I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a support having a transverse slot therein; a guide atone side of the entrance to the slot of said support having a tape-receiving opening therethrough normally in alinement with said slot, adapted to fold an edge of the tape while being fed therethrough into said slot, and a passage for a cord in said guide inclined toward said tape-receiving opening.
2. In a device of the class described, support having a transverse slot therein; a guide at one side of the entrance to the slot of said support and separated therefrom, said guide having a tape-receiving opening therethrough normally in alinement with said slot adapted to fold an edge of the tape while being fed therethrough into said slot; a passage for a cord in said guide inclined toward said tape-receiving opening; and means whereby said guide may be moved out of alinement with said slot.
3. In a device of the class. described, a support having a transverse slot therein; a guide at one side of the entrance to the slot of said support and separated therefrom, said guide having a tapereceiving opening therethrough normally in alinement with said slot adapted to told an edge of the tape while being fed therethrough; and a tubular member in said guide forming a passage for a cord in. said guide inclined toward said tape-receiving opening.
i. In a device of the class described, a support having a transverse slot therein; and a guide pivotally mountedon one side of said support and having extending therethrough a tape-receiving opening normally alined with said slot and a cord-receiving passage inclined toward said opening.
5. In a device of the class described, a support having a transverse slot therein; a. guide pivotally mounted on one side of said support and having extending therethrough a tape-receiving opening normally alined with said slot and a cord-receiving passage inclined toward said opening; and means for limiting the movement of said guide about its pivot.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support consisting in part of a flat plate; a U-shaped member mounted on the outer end thereof and forming, with the end of said plate, a slot, the parallel walls of said member contacting with the opposite faces of said plate; and a guide secured to the side of said support and having passages therethrough nomally alined with said slot through which a tape and cord may be fed into said slot.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support consisting in part of a flat plate; a Ushaped member mounted on the outer end thereof and forming, with the end of said plate, a slot, the parallel walls of said member contacting with the opposite faces of said plate; a guide secured walls of said member contacting with the opposite faces of said plate; and a guide secured to the side of said support and having passages therethrough normally alined with said slot through which a tape and a cord may be fed into said slot, said guide being formed in, two parts, adjustable rela tively to each other.
9. In a device of the class described,

In a device of the class described, a support having a transverse slot therein; a guide at one side of the entrance to the slot of said support having a tape-receiving opening therethrough normally alined with said slot, provided at its outer end with a a curved projecting flange and adapted to fold an edge of the tape while being fed therethrough; a passage for a cord in said guide inclined toward said tape-receiving opening; and means whereby said guide nliay be moved out of alinement with said s ot.
