WILLIAM F. ABBOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY ASSIGNMENTS, T
EQUIPMENT DEVICES COMIANY, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
TROUGH PROTECTOR.
Application filed July 22, 1921. Serial No. 486,795.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM F. ABBo'r'r,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trough Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cars of the class employed for shipping live poultry and which are accordingly provided with longitudinal series of coops and tiers at opposite sides of a central aisle, the coops being equipped with troughs for holding feed and water for the poultry.
This invention is fully described in the following specification and shown in the ac companying drawings, in whioh- Figure 1 is a partial transverse section through one of the tiers of coops;
Figure 2 is a partial horizontal section on the broken line 2, 2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a partial elevation on the line 3 of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a partial vertical section on the line 4 of Fig. 1;
Figure 5 is a partial horizontal section on the line 5 of Fig. 3; and
Figure 6 is a perspective of a clip.
This invention is an improvement of the poultry car shown in the patent to Mudd No. 956,401 in which there is a series of coops arranged in tiers on each sidevof a central aisle which extends lengthwise through the car. The coops in each tier are supported by means of floors 10 which are secured to longitudinal members 11 and angle irons 12 which are carried by the vertical channels 13 and 14, the channels 14 being upon the cen tral aisle and the channels 13 being at the outside of the car. The outer ends of the coops may be closed in any convenient manner as by means of the wire screens 15 which are secured to the channels 13 by means of bolts 16 and plate 17.
The inner or aisle ends of the coops are closed by means of doors 18 having longitudinally extending pins 19 which are slidably fitted into slots 20 in the flanges of the channels 14. The upper ends of these doors are preferably held by means of pins 21 which are arranged to slide into bayonet slots 22 in the flanges of the channels 14. This permits these doors to be readily opened. and closed.
A trough 23 is supported between each two adjacent coops upon the same level, by I means of a shell 24 which in turn is carried by two stirrup-like straps 25 one near each end of the shell and which are suspended from the floor 10 above by means of bolts 26.
A canopy 27 overlies each trough 23 and is also carried by the stra s 25. This canopy is preferably arched as s own in Fig. 4 and is wider than the trough 23 and has a gutter 28 at each side and extendinglongitudinally thereof so that any refuse dropping through from the floor above will be caught-by the canopy and prevented from falling into the trough. The canopy 27 is also inclined'toe ward the outside of the car so thatv anymaterial falling into the troughs 28 will be carried toward the side of the car.
It will thus be seen that the food and water provided for the poultry will be greatly protected and the tendency of the poultry to become diseased while in transit will be greatly reduced. The straps 25 also serve to support the'partition members 29 and 30 which are secured respectively above and below the trough by means of the bolts 31. The lower member 30 is held at each end by means of a U-shaped clip 32 as shown 1 in Fig. 6 which is secured to an upright channel member by means of bolts 33. Each trough is removable endwise through an opening 34 in the supporting channel 14 and is slidable in its shell 24 where it'is held by gravity.
This arrangement of partitions and troughs facilitates the cleaning of the car and the renewal of parts.
While I have shown and described but a single embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of. the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of. the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a poultry car containing coops at C opposite sides of an aisle, a trough supported 1 between each pair of adjacent coops, and'a canopy supported above each trough for preventing refuse from dropping into the trough, said canopy acting as a barrier between adjacent coops. 11o
2. In a poultry ear containing 'ooops'. at opposite sides of an ais1e,-a' trough supported 10 opposite sidesof an aisle a trough supported between each pair of-adjacent Coops, a debetWeen each pair of adjacent coops and a pending support for each end of the trough, canopy supported above each trough, said a canopy carried above the troughby said canopy being inclinedtoward one end and support,- said canopy acting as a barrier behaving a gutter formed on each side so that tween adjacent coops, and additional parti- 15 refuse falling on the canopy will be carried tion members carried by said support.
toward the lower end thereof.
3. In a poultry car containing coops at WILLIAM F. ABBOTT.
Certificate of Correction.
It is hereby certified that the State of incorporation of the assignee in Letters Patent No. 1,508,149, granted September 9, 1924, upon the application of William F. Abbott, of Chicago, Illinois, for an improvement in Trough Protectors, was erroneously given as Maine, Whereas said State should have been given as Delaware, as shown 1) the record of assignments in this office; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Oflice.
Signed and sealed this 14th day of October A. D. 192%.
[SEAL] KARL FENNING,
Acting Commissioner of Patents.
