Description

WILLIS HOTCHKISS AND LEWIS HOTCHKISS, OF-DERBY, CONNECTICUT.
KNOB-LATCH FOR DOORS, &c.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 1,508, dated March 6, 1840.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, VILLIs HoToHKrss and LEWIS HoToHKIss, of the town of Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Latches, commonly called Knob--Latches;7 and we do hereby declare that the followinggis a full and exact description of our said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our improvement may be applied either to a lifting latch, as is represented in Figures 1 and 2, or to a sliding or draw-back latch, as is represented in Fig. 3.
The principal parts of a latch, such as herein referred to, are the plate, a, the latch, the spring, c, the bar, (Z, and the knob, e, and in the case of a sliding latch the leverv as represented in Fig. 3. lThe plate latch and spring may be formed and combined in any Vconvenient manner; and our improvement consists in forming a notch in the bar, as shown at, d, in each of the figures, and combining the several parts above named in the manner in which they are represented in the several figures, or in any other manner,
so that the spring shall press the latch against the flat surface which forms the bottom of the aforesaid notch inthe bar, as in Figs. 1 and 2, or in the case of a sliding latch so that said spring shall press the lever f against the bottom of said notch, as in Fig. 3, in such a manner that by turning the bar in either direction around its axis the latch will be lifted, in the case of a lifting latch, or if it be ak sliding latch that it will be retracted.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The method herein described of working the latch by the face of the notch cut in the bar instead of the addition of a lever or cam on the bar as in the old mode, application of such notch for the vpurpose of lifting or retracting the latch, according to the principles herein described and represented in the accompanying drawings.
WILLIS HOTCHKISS. LEWIS HOTCHKISS.
