`UNITED STATES vvPxrjiiir OFFICE;
HENRY B. WINTER/S AND JOHN E. MCCORMICK, OF ELKI-IART, KANSAS; SAID WINTERS ASSIGNO'R TO SAID MCCORMICK.
WELL-CASING COUPLING.
Application filed December 17, 1920. Serial No. 431,400.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY B. "WINTERS and JOHN E. McCormick, citizens of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Morton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fell-Casing Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved well casing coupling and has as one of its principal objects to provide a coupling wherein the sections of a well casing may be quickly and securely connected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coupling employing a plurality of coupling straps which may be easily applied for securing the casing sections together.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a. coupling employing retaining means for the free ends of the straps so that the straps will not pull out under pulling stress upon the casing.`
Other and incidental objects will appear iereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a coupling embodying the present invention, A
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view looking downwardly upon the coupling, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
In carrying the invention into eifect, we employ casing sections 10 and 11 respectively which are formed at their meeting ends to telescope one within the other, the section 11 being limited in its movement over the section 10 by an annular stop shoulder 12. Snugly surrounding the section 10 above said shoulder is a collar 13 riveted or otherwise secured at spaced points to the section and formed from said collar isa plurality of outwardly or radially directed stirrups 14. Preferably, the collar isv provided with three of said stirrups and, as will be observed upon reference to Figure 2 of the drawings, the rivets securing said collar are arranged substantially midway between the stirrups. Formed through the lower end portions of said stirrups near the lower edge of the collar are slots 15 below which are vdefined keepers 16. Snugly surrounding the casing section 11 near its adjacent end is acollar 17. This collar is i i a counterpart of the collar 13, being similarly secured and provided with a plurality of stirrups 18. These stirrups correspond to the stirrups 14 Vand are provided near their upper ends adjacent the upper edge of the collar with slots 19 above which4 are defined keepers 20. As shown in Figure 1, the casing sections are fitted together in such manner 'that the stirrups 14 and 18 are alined and fitting through said stirrups are coupling straps 21. These straps are each preferably formed from a length of suitable resilient sheet metal and, as willl be noted, the upper end portions of the straps are looped over the stirrups 14 and inserted through the slots 15 to engage beneath the keepers 16 while the lower end portions of the'straps are looped over the stirrups 18 and inserted through the slots 19 to engage beneath the keepers 20. r1`he straps will thus rigidly connect the casing sections while the keepers will retain or tie the free end portions of said straps so that the straps will not pull out under pulling stress upon the casing.v Je accordingly provide a coupling of highlyefective construction and a coupling which may be'readily employed in .connection with well casings now commonly in use.
Having thus p described the invention,` what isl claimed as new is:
The combination with casing sections tele'-` scopically connected, one of' said sections having an annular shoulder abutting against'the adjacent edge ofthe other of said sections; ofV collars secured on the sections a-t the adjacent ends thereof, radial stirrups. integral with said collars extending between the edges thereof,keepers on the `stirrups formed on a longer radius than the` stirrups, and coupling straps passing under the stirrups and having theirV free end portions bent back over the remote edges of the stirrups and engaged through the keepers. y
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
