J. ROSS PADDING FOR USE IN .PRISSING OPERATIONS AND THE LIKE Filld July 12. 1921 ooooooooo Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ROSS, OF RICHMOND HILL, NEW YORK.
PADDING FOR USE IN PRFSSING OPERATIONS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 12, 1921. Serial No. 484,253.-
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known-that I, JOHN Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padding for Use in Pressing Operations and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to padding for use in pressing operations or the like and particularly to padding for use in the dry cleaning, steaming and pressing woolen and cotton cloth or clothing.
An object of my invention is to provide a yielding paddin through which steam or vapor may pass reely. A further object of my invention is to form a padding of the type described from a yielding material which oifers substantial resistance to the passage of steam and vapor by providing such material with perforations throughwhich the steam and vapor may pass. More specifically an object of my invention is to provide a yielding padding consisting of a layer of perforated wadding between two layers of open-work fabric.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,- in which Fig. 1 is a plan View, partly in section, of the buck of a pressin machine to which my improved form of padding has been applied.
Big. 2 is a vertical section through the buck and applied padding, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through a portion of the padding.
In the drawings the buck is indicated by the numeral 1, and as here shown comprises a heating chamber 2 and a moistening chamber 3. The heating .chamber is provided with a pipe 4 for the introduction of steam and a pipe 5 for the removal of water of condensation. The upper face of the moistening chamber 3 is formed by the perforated pressing plate 6, and steam is supplied to the chamber through inlet pipe 7. To secure an even distribution of steam throughout the chamber a battle plate 8 is located over the outlet of pipe 7. The steam which is used for moistening the garment or cloth is exhausted from the chamber 3 through pipes 9 which lead to a. suction device, not shown. The padding 10 to which this invention relates is held in position on the pressing plate 6 by means of the cover cloth 11, which may be of ticking or other suitable material.
The padding 10 consists of an intermediate layer of wadding 12 provided with perforations 13, and quilted between two layers of unperforated cheesecloth or other open work fabric 14, 14 by rows of stitching 15. The wadding 12 .provides a yielding or cushioning body and the fabric 14, 14, serves as a reinforcement for enabling the layer of wadding to maintain its shape while being applied to a pressing or other machine and during use in pressing operations. The padding may be formed by running wadding through a puncturin machine and then placing the perforate wadding in a quilting machine with sheeting of cheesecloth or the like on both sides, and then quilting in the usual manner. Good results are secured when the perforations are about one quarter inch in diameter and are spaced from an inch to an inch and a quarter between centers, but the size and relative spacing of the perforations may be varied to suit different conditions.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to machines of the type here shown but may be used with other machines and in other steaming, cleaning and pressing operations.
I claim:
1. A padding for use in pressing operations and the like comprising unwoven yielding nonmetallic wadding provided with perforations for the passage of steam, and open-Work fabric on ooth sides of said Waddin Qi A padding for use in pressing operations and the like comprising. a layer of unwoven yielding nonmetallic wadding provided with perforations for the passage of steam, a layer of o en-work textile fabric arranged at each si e of said layer of wadding, and rows of stitching for holding said layers in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
oan ROSS.
