J'IG 'FOR ASSEMBLING CO'ORDINATE SVJITCHES.
Application led July 20,
To all A'whom t may concern.:
Bel it known that I, FRANK H. Humano, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Arlington, 'in the county ofL Hudson and State of NewJersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jigs for Assembling Coordinate Switches, of which the followingis a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention` relates to a jig for use in assembling` telephone switches. More par-` ticularly it refers to a jig used in the assembly of the so-called coordinate switch for holding .the reti-acting springs in adjustedposition with reference to their associated active wires to facilitate the assembly of their supporting members on the .switch frame.
'The object of the invention is fthe provisionof means whereby certain .operating parts of the switch referred to above may be easily assembled. Y Y
A feature of the invention is-the provision of means whereby a plurality of resilient supports each serving a set of active contacts are held collectively in tensioned position to facilitate their assembly on the switch structure with which they form a part.`
Another feature is the provision of means whereby the retracting spring of each active contact set is held in line parallel with reference to its associated set of active contact wires in order to facilitate the mounting of the camming cards thereon.
Other features and advantages will appear from the following description and the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a right hand side assembly view ofanactive contact wire supportingmember showing the jig and the retracting springs held thereby in tensioned position, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Figpl taken approximately on line 2-2 and seen in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. 3 is a front View of a set of active and passive contacts showing the camming card in assembled position, and Fig. t is a portion of the retracting spring supporting plate showing the relative position of the active contact wires with reference to the retracting spring.
Similar reference characters refer similar parts through the several views.
T he switch structure in which the present invention is particularly well adapted for use is shown partially in Fig. 1 and gener- 1923. serial No.' 652,750.
ally consists of a plurality of sets of act-ive contacts molded into aninsulatin'g upright support 20, .which is. securely arranged at both ends on thevcross bars vlO and l1 ofthe switch frameY (not shown). Each active contact set generally consists of' aplurality of` bare wires' 21, 22 and 23, the free ends of which extend laterally from 'support 20, through apertures 24 in a supporting plate 25 in engageable relation-with associated grid wires 26, 27 and 28 held in spaced rela` tion with reference to their associated active `contact vwires by means Vof insulating strips 29,'one of which is'shown partially in lig. 1. I
For each set of active contact wires 21, 22'and 23, there is provided a retracting spring 30 secured onthe insulating bar 20 and a movable camming card 31. Normally, the retracting spring 30 liesin retracted position as indicated bythe dotted line in the up ier set of active contact wires shown in F 1. Consequently, in order to easily passtheA active contactwires'2l,` 22 and 23 and their retracting springs '30 through their respective apertures 24 and to put the camming cards 31 nfposition on the contact wires 21,22 and23, when the support 20 is securedon the cross bars 10 and 11 it is necessary to hold the retracting springs 30 of each bar 20 collectively and in line parallel with the normal direction of the active contacts in order that the active contacts andl the retracting spring may register with their associated apertures in the camming cards 31. The jig used for this purpose consists of a metal strip 32 having a plurality of laterally extending arms 33 each provided at its free end with a hook 34 adapted to hold its respectively associated retracting spring 30 in line parallel with reference 'to the direction of the active contacts to p'ermit the passing of the active contact sets and their retracting springs through the apertures of the supporting plate in order to assemble the uprigh'tvsupports on the switch f held at each end on the upright support 2O by means of clamps each consisting of a movable handle lever 4:9 pivoted on the sta-4 tionary handle lever and acted upon by means of a spring 4l tensioned to close the movable handle levers 49 against the ieinforcing strip 38. The stop pins 42 are provided tolimit the movement of the movable handle lever 49 and to assist in positioning the supports on the jiO.
lV hat is claimed is:
l. A jig for assembling a switching device, said jig comprising a bar, a plurality of laterally extending arms thereon, and Ameans on each of said arms for retaining springs in tensioned position during the assembly of the switch.
2. A jig for restraining the Contact set tensioning springs in a coordinate switch structure, said jig comprising a sti'ip, a plurality of laterally extendingr arms disposed at regu-lar intervals thereon and having their' free end portions bent to receive said springs and hold them in position.
3. A jig for holding the active contact retract-ing springs in a switching device, comprising a strip, a locating pin arranged on each end of said strip registering in holes in the supporting member for said contacts and springs, and means for holding said strip in adjusted position on said member to faeilitate the assembly of said springs in said device.
4. A jig for use in the manufacture ofl telephone switches, said switohes having a frame, upright supports, contact sets arranged on said supports, a. retracting spring for each of said sets, a camming card for loosely connecting one of said springs to each of said Contact sets, said j-ig comprising a bar, a plurality ofy laterally extending arms integrally formed therewith, and a hook on each .of said arms for holding the.y
retracting springs in position for assembling said supports on said frame and said cards on said contacts.
5. A jig for-assembling switches having each of said sets, said jig comprisinga bar,
a plurality of locating pinsy arranged thereon for locating said bar on saidsupports, a plurality of laterally extending arms on said bar for holding the retracting springs in spaced relation with the active contacts .for assembling the tie members and a pair of clamps for retaining said support on said jig while positioning said support on said switch. v i
6. A ig for assembling telephone switchesl having sets of active contacts and retracting springs arranged on insulating supports, a ran'i'e for said supports, a. tie member associated with each of said contact sets, a jig for holding said retracting springsv tensioned to permit the assembly of said tie` members on said. Contact sets, pins on ysaid jig registering with similarly disposed holes in said support for loc-ating said support on said jig and means for holding said support on said jigl for' assembling said sunporton said frame.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 13 day of July A. D., 1923.5V
