Be it known that I, Jon KnRsHAw, a subj'ect of the Kingl of Great Britain, residing at Rose Mount, Menston, Yorkshire, England, have invented new and useful lm proveinents in Machines or Apparatus for Dyeing and the like,` of which the followinv is a specification. Y y
his invention relates to machines or apparatus for dyeing, mordanting, bleaching, scouring or similarly treating with liquors or liquids wool, slubbing, yarn, wool and cotton wastes, woolen: Yand cotton warpe, hose, rags, jute and a-ll raw materials in which the, material' under treatment` `is placed in a tankor vat between a movable perforated or the like false bottom and a stationary or fixed lattice or the like topY and is-'repeatedly squeezed or compressed when saturated with the liquor or liquid and allowed to openout or expand after each coin-k pression and it relates particularly tothe machine or apparatus described in the specification of `United States Letters Patent No. 934543, -grantedto me, and the primary object of the present invention is in a machine or apparatus of this class the cooperation therewith of a liquor or liquid circulating device 'characterized by an external pump in `conjunction with a bottom outlet and inlet pipe and longitudinal side or side and end outlet pipes located towards the top .ofthe tank or vat but below the normal level of lthe liquor or liquid in the tank or vat and with a spraying device comprising perforated pipes attached to and located above the lattice or the like top and also, if desired, with a reservetank. The invention also consists of the construction, arrangement and combination ,of parts'embracingmeans for operating the movable false bottom comprising a fallingover weighted lever operated by an .endlesschain device adapted to controlthe rota-` tionaldirection and speed of a longitudinal Ashaft carrying the winding-drums for raising and lowering thel false bottom, also means for raising the lattice or the like top from its stationary or fixed position comprising a hand operated cross shaft carryfv ,ing the winding-drums or thelike and controlled in thedownward movement of the,

4vertical pipe 18 tits telescopically a vertical supply pipe 21 in order to allow the top to be raised sufficiently high, by mechanism hereinafter described, for the false bottom with the material under treatment resting thereon to be raised to the top of the tank or vat for the removal or inspection of the material.
The liquor or liquid is circulated by an external pump 22 located at one end of the tank or vat and by means of which the liquor or liquid can be passed through the material under treatment in either direction without the necessity of reversing the pump in a very simple and efficient manner by an arrangement of pipes, branch pipes and valves. If desired a separate or reserve tank may be used in conjunction with the said goods-tank. In a preferred arrangement in' which a separate or lreserve is used, a horizontal pipe 23 ruiming beneath the bottom of the tank is open to the tank by means of a branch pipe 24 and is coupled to the drain at one end said end being provided with a valve `and at the other end coupled with the suction end of the pump 22 and provided with a three-way valve 25 at 'the junction thereof and to which junction a horizontal outlet pipe 26 from the bottom of the reserve tank is coupled. Coupled to the delivery end of the pump 22 and provided with a three-way valve 27 at the junction is a vertical supply pipe 21a extending above the driving mechanism located above 'the tank and coupled to the vertical supply pipe 21, which is telescopically coupled to the vertical pipe 18 of the Y spraying device, by a horizontal branch pipe 21". A horizontal inlet or return pipe 28 to the top of the reserve tank is coupled to the'vertical supply pipe 21 and is provided with a three-way valve 29 at t-he junction thereof. A branch pipe 30 is coupled at one end to -th-e three-way valve 27 at the junction of the delivery end of the pump 22 and the vertical supply pipe 21a and at the other end to the horizontal pipe 23 beneath the bottom of the tank. Horizontal side or side and end pipes 31 are provided on the outside of the tank, said pipes communicating with the interior o f the tank by means of branch pipes 33 and are connected to a common vertical pipe 34 the lower end of which is coupled to the horizontal pipe 23 beneath the bottom of the tank between the three-way valve 25 at the suction end of the pump and the junction of the said branch pipe 30 with the same horizontal pipe, the upper end of the vertical pipe 34 being coupled by a branch pipe 35 to the vertical supply pipe 21 and is provided with a valve 36 at the junction and also a three-way valve 37 is provided at the junction of the vertical pipe34 with the horizoncated between the spraying` device 15 and the lattice or lthe like top 1.0, and through the material in the tank, or same may be drawn from the sides and .end of the .tank
and forced through thespraying device, or same drawn from ,the sides and end and forced into the bottom of the tank, or from the bottom and forced into the reserve tank, or same from the reserve tallkand forced either through the spraying ,device or into the bottom .of the tank.`
The false bottom is raised slowly and lowered rapidly fromA a driven cross shaft 40 journalled in brackets 41 secured to. longitudinal beams 42 located above the tank` and supported on and secured to end frames 43 located outside the tank and secured to the ground foundation.y To control the*v rotational direction and speed of the said cross shaft we employ preferably7 two ysets of fast and loose pulleys mounted .on said cross shaft, one set 44 of which is driven by an open belt and the other set 45, at a greater speed by a crossed belt. The belts are moved on to their respective fast andloose pulley by means of forks 44a and 45a secured to a cross slide 46- mounted in beari-ngsin the brackets 41 carrying the driven cross shaft 40. kThis cross slide 46 is operated by a lever 47 suitably connected to same and secured on a longitudinal rocking shaft; 43
mounted at one end in la bracket or hanger 49 secured to th-e longitudinal side beam 42 and at the other end'in the end frame 43. l Secured to this longitudinal rocking vshaft is a dependent hand lever 50 provided with a s i counte-rpoised weight 51 and located on the outside ofthe end frame. By moving this` hand lever to the right orto the' left the belts1 which engage or drive loose pulleys when the hand lever is in a verticalvposition, may be made to drive a'fast pulley on one set and loose pulley on the .other set, er vice versa. The said hand lever is secured in its vertical position by a .detachable pinv passed through same and engaging a hole 52 in the end frame so that in this position the false bottom is stationary, the belts driving loose pulleys.

The said worm wheel is engagedV by a worm 58 on a short shaft 59 journalled in bearings other ends to their respective rods carrying'k the false bottom. The central longitudinal shaft 53 has a sprocket wheel 63y secured to it on the outside of the endframe and over this sprocket wheel and a guide sprocket wheel 64 located vertically below `same and pivoted to the end frame or to abracket 65 adjustably secured to same is stretched an endlesschain 66. This chain is employed' for automatically reversing the movementy of the vfalse bottomand to this yend a .lever 67 is secured on the longitudinal rocking shaft 48 on the inside of the frame. The end of this lever is slidably connected to a slotted link 70 pivoted at one end to onearm 7]. of a three-armed lever secured to-Va short rocking shaft 72 passing through land mounted in bearings in the end frame and located on the inside of same. 'The other two arms areV provided with weights the central one 73 with a large weight 74 for throwing over the lever on either side and the other arm 75 with a smaller counterpoise weight 76. On the other end of the short rocking shaft on the outside ofthe frame is secured a hand lever 77'the projecting end portion 7 8 of which is provided with a slot or fork which embraces the nearer portion or member of the stretched endless chain. Adjustable stops are provided on thisI portion ofthe chain one at each side of the projecting slotted end portion of the lever. Figure 4 shows an enlarged section of the top stop in contact with the forked end portion 78 of the lever 77. The stops are slidably secured to the chain by the set-screws 80a so that the distance between the stops may be altered thereby allowing a varied lift ofthe false bot-tom in order that different weights or bulksof material may be treated in the same machine or apparatus. In operation when the portion of the chain containing the stops 80 is moving upwards the bottom stop comes into contact with the downwardly projecting end and lifts same until the middle weighted arm becomes just past the vertical position when the weight on s ame falls freely over giving to same sufficient momentum to rock the longitudinal shaft 48 and thereby reverse the motion of the false bottom and at the same time causing the lportion ofthe `chain tol move -Y downwards and 'at'. faster speed `when the top stop comes into contact with the said leven which is now inclined upwards and raising the weighted arm until same is just past the vertical position whenfit falls over on the other side and therebyreverses the direction of the false bottom.` vIn order to give the falseibottom a dwell at the bottom of-its stroke the top stop iis inoved further away from thelbottomstop in which case the false bottom reaches vthe bottom of its stroke 'before .the motion is 1 reversed*` ther chain-*thereby becoming slack 'during the ref;

In order to treat materials in the bank form the lattice ory the like topis provided with attachment means for supporting the said hanksconsisting of end platesf90 pro vided with vertical slots 91 through which the supporting laths or sticks are inserted. These parallel` sticks are of rectangular shape in cross section and have recesses between their angles on the contact edges.
The slotted end plates 90 are hung from and secured or removably secured to the lattice or the like top.y
Steam for heating' purposes is uniformly delivered at the bottom of the goods-tank and the reserve tank by means of a main steam pipe 92 having preferably "forked extensions 93 running lengthwise along the bottom of the tank. Heated air for agita-V tion purposes may likewise be uniformly delivered by 'means of an ordinary airinjector in conjunction with the said steam pipe.
