UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
GEORGE H. KNUFF, OF vVAFAKONETTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELE AND HARVEY BROKAV, OF SAME FLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-ESCAPEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,766, dated May 12, 1374; application filed February 7, 1674.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. KNUFF, of Wapakonetta, iu the county ot Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in dfatches, of which the following is a specification:
A means heretofore used for causing the vibration of balance-Wheels of lever-escapement watches, is a pin iixed vertically in a disk attached to the under side of such wheels, and
adapted to engage with the notched or slotted But this arrangement is end of the lever. 'open to serious objection, chiefly in that the aforesaid pin is liable to become permanently disengaged from the notch in the lever. To prevent this result, which is technically termed over-backing, is the great object of my iuvention. And to this end I provide the notched end ofthe escapelever with curved arms so arranged as to guide the pin of the balancewheel back into the notch when overbackin g occurs, and thus immediately restore the normal operation or function of the parts.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a view of the balance-wheel and improved forked lever, showing the ruby-pin and guards. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate eorresponding parts.
A is the balance-wheel. B is the balance wheel post. O is the plate or disk on the bal ance-wheel post. I) is the ruby-pin in the plate G. E is the lever, on the end of which are formed two circular guards, F F, having between them a small slot, G, in which the ruby-pin works. The guards curve or round outward, directly from the notch or open slot, so that the pin D is readily guided back into the latter (without jar or strain of any of the parts) whenever it leaves its proper arc oi' vi` bration.
This construction enables the ordinary bank ing-pins (for limiting the throw of the lever) to be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe lever E, having the arms F F extending directly from the notch, and curved around the balance-staff, their outer ends beingin the path vof the ruby-pin, and serving as a banking therefor. GEORGE H. KNUFF.
