Be it lmown that I Hannon J. Coon, a citizen of the United tates, residin at 'I orrin n, in the county of Litchfie d, State of onnecticut, have invented certain n ew and useful Improvements in Swagers wlth Taper Attachments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawin and to the figures of reference marked ereon.
This invention relates to swagmg machines, and more particularly toa devlce for swaging round stock such as wire, and the like.
, The main object of the present invention-V is to provide a swaging device which w1ll impart a continuous taper to a length of.
round stock. l,
A further object of the invention is to provide such a machine in which the degree and extent of the taper are adjustable. j
Another feature of the invention resides in providing such a machine composed of few parts of simple operation, and which can be readily adjusted Ito the demands of the stock required.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part tbe hereinafter more fully disclosed.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine,
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof from the right end, and i Fig. 3 is a'sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In general, the machine comprises reciprocable swaging dies carried by a spindle revolving concentrically within a series of rolls or die operating members mounted with-.in a stationary head, together with means for adjusting the position of the working faces of the dies consisting of a yoke carried by the spindle and.V operated by a rod extending longitudinally therethrou h, and shifted by means of a system of lins operated by a cam on the power shaft of the machine. This power shaft is provided with an additional cam operating a linkage for reciprocating a feed slide, which is provided with a gripping jaw for holding the wire stock in position so that it can be drawn continuously through the swaging dies, which subject the stock to a smallrods succession of swaging impacts, the swagmg' effect of which is gradually increased or decreased by shifting the position of the workmg faces of the dies to or from the wire stock during the operation of the continuously operating wedge operating mechamsm. l
Describingthe machine in detail, the device comprises a bafse or table 1 supporting the spaced standards 2 and 3. The standard 2 houses the stationary head 4 containing the die operatin rolls or members. Concentrically withm these members is arranged Athe spindle 5, the -rear end of which is housed by standard 3. This spindle is driven by the .pulley 6 to impart a continuous rotation to the s indle carr 'ng the dies and backers asis s own in t e patent to gayton No. 492,576, granted February 28, The wedges 7 are adjusted between each die and its backer by means of the yoke 8 carried by the spindle 5 and operated by 'a wedge opening rod 9 extendin longitudinally through the spindle .an extending from the end as at 10. Obviously any type of rotary swaging device may be used in lieu of this descri ed construction, such for instance, as -that described in a co-pending application, led jointly by James H. Graham and me.
iOver the end of the rod 9 loosely fits a collar 11 provided with laterally extending studs 12 engaging the furcations 13 of. a yoke 14.0n the upper end of a lever 15 which 1s pivoted as at 16 to the standard 3.v This collar 11 is held in. adjusted position on the threaded end 10 of the spindle by means of the opposed nuts 17 and 18 which provide an adjustment for the connection to the lever 15. The lower end of lever 15 connects with a link 19 pivoted to an arm 20 pivoted at 21 to the base 1. The lower end of the arm 20 is formed with la friction J roller 22 adapted to be operated by an interchangeable cam 23 mounted on the cam shaft 24.
As shown in Fig. 2, this shaft has its bearings in two brackets 25 and 25 depending from the under side of the base 1, and is driven by a vgear 26 fixed thereto which meshes with a pinion 27 xed on a power shaft 28 journaled in the upper portion of the depending arms` 25 and 25. The outer end of shaft 28 is provided with a belt pulley 28 and clutch. of any desired type for driving the shaft at will.
The frame 29 of the slide 29 which draws the wire stock throughI the swaging dies is mounted on the table 1 directly in front of the rotating head. 4. On its upper portion it is provided with a stock gripping jaw 30 which by means of a hand lever 3l clamps the wire or other stock securely. The slide is provided with a link 32 pivoted thereto and provided with a series of holes 33 to form an adjustable connection with a second link 34 likewise formed with a series of perforations 35. This link pivots to a support 36 depending from the table. `One end of an arm 37 connects by means of the desired perforation 35` to link 34 and the other to one of series of holes 38 in a lever 39 pivoted at 40 to the under side of the table. This lever 39 is formed with a friction roller 41 cooperating with a cam 42 mounted on the cam shaft 24.
From the foregoing description, it will be evident that when stock from a coil or a blank is inserted in the dies in the spindle, the stock or free end of the blank being gripped by the jaws 30 of the slide 29', and the clutch is operated to actuate the power shaft 28 one complete revolution, by means of the cam 42 and links 39, 37, 34 and 32, the stock or blank is drawn through the dies which are simultaneously given a succession of swaging blows or impacts by means of the rotating spindled driven by the pulley 6. While the stock is thus being drawn .through the swaging dies they are being progressively and continuously brought closer together or farther apart as` desired by means of the wedges 7 which are simultaneously operated by the yoke 8 and rod 9, the levers 18, 19 and 20 which are operated' by cam 23 on the continuous rotating of the cam shaft.
It is also clear that by means of the adjustments on the levers 32, 34 and 39, which control the rate of feed of the slide 29 together with the selected design of the `i11- terchangeable cam 25 which controls the degree of adjustment of the wedges, the machine is capable of swaging work or stock to any taper or form within the capacity of the machine.
It is obvious that the machine may be constructed to be used as an attachment to eX- isting swagin devices, such as for instance, disclosed in t e co-pendingapplication before set forth. It is also within the contem lation of this invention to construct the mac ine entirely automatic or semi-automatic.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1, In a device of the class described, a plurality of dies adapted to swage a length of stock by a succession of impacts, means for progressing the stock through said dies during the swaging operation, and means for progressively alterin the position of the working faces of said ies with respect to the stock during the movement of said Stock whereby the stock is tapered. y
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a stationary head, die operating members disposed therein, a spindle rotatable concentrically within said members, means for rotating said spindle, a plurality of dies carried by said spindle, and simultaneously operable by said members on rotation of said spindle to swage stock concentrically positioned within said dies, a wedge for each die adapted to alter the working position of said dies with respect to the stock, means for progressing stock through said dies during their swagmg operation, and means for continuously and simultaneously operating said wedges to progressively alter the swaging effect of said dies whereby the stock is tapered.
3. In a device of the class described, in
combination a support, a stationary head therein, a rotatable spindle mounted in said head, a plurality of swaging dies carried by said spindle and adapted to impart a succession of swaging blows to a length of stock upon rotation of said spindle, a wedge con nected to said dies, a wedge rod operable through said spindle and connected vto said wedges for simultaneously shifting the same, a stock feeding slide on said support, a ro tatable shaft on said support, a cam rotatable therewith, means operable by said cam for continuously moving said slide, a second cam rotatable with said shaft, and mea-ns operable by said second cam for continuously shifting said wedge rod whereby to impart a taper to said stock.
