IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-IRONlN-G MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. l 50,757., dated May 1:2, 1874; application tiled March 14, 1874.
. To all whom t may concern:
l New Jersey, and LOUIS DROVON, of Newark,
in the county f Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Ironing Machine, of which the following is a specification: Our invention consists of irons suspended from balancedevers by flexible joints, and the levers arrangedon swinging'supports in such manner that the labor of presenting and holding the irons to the work is materially lessened, and the irons can be applied to better advantage, and the pressure regulated better, than in other machines. f

A represents a revolving stand having a hatblock, B, on the top -for Eat-crowned hats. O is the iron for dressing the sides; D, the' one for the top; and E a roller for dressing the top of the brim. These irons we suspend from a balance-lever, F, by a hanger, G, movable along the lever and capable of turning in it, and connected to the irons, so that they can turn on it, and rise and fall relatively tothe levers. H is a spring on the suspendingrod, to hold the irons down by elastic pressure, by using the lever for that purpose. le also connect the irons to the end of another balance-lever, J, byv oscillating joints, which also allow the irons to move forward and backward on the levers, and we mount the levers on a- "the same, manner, and the mandrel of the block will be mounted on a stand, R, capable of moving around a center, S, to bring all parts of the block into contact with the iron. The irons will be made hollow, to be heated by heaters placed in the hollow space, and inclosed by a door, in the same manner as they are now heated in other machines. The balance-levers F .Ilare arranged to be shifted for- 'ward and backward ondtheir pivots, to adjust the irons as may be required. The joints K connecting the irons with thelevers J are designed. to be rigid in the direction in which the friction acts on the irons, to prevent them from being displaced by the friction. It will be seen that by means of these balance-levers the irons can be handled with facility.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent#- 'lhe combination, with block B and the iron that smooths the brim, of the roller placed in advance thereof and operating to ilatten the brim and enable it to run under the iron with facility.
