new Vand'fuseful.tImprovements` in Can Opener-grof which thefollowi'ng is a full,
clear, and'exact. descriptionj.
-Theyinventfio'n relates .to can-openers. 'One object'v of the invention is to provide an improved; can-opener infwhi'ch: the knife isadapted.toicuttheside ofthe canin such manner vthat theburrsy from .the'cut will be` on the 'outside of the can,.`leaving=the in-v tion through the cutter-head. Fig. 4 is anv inverted plan of said head. Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the cutters and Fig. 6 is a detail section showing one of the cutters in operation. Fig. 7 is a perspective of the can-support.
A supporting bracket 8 is adapted to be secured to a table by bolts 9 and comprises a lower arm 10 adapted to support the table 11 on which the cans are held and an upper arm 12, to which is secured, by bolts 12a, a frame provided with a central bearing 13 for the cutter-head shaft 14 and bearings 15 for a crank-shaft 16. A rotary cutter-head 17 is fixed to the lower end of the shaft 14 which is adapted to be driven by a gear-'wheel 18 xed to its upper end and a pinion 19 fixed to the shaft 16, which has a crank 20 secured to one end thereof. This cutter-head is provided on its under face with a series of recesses 21, 22 and 23 adapted to receive the upper ends of cans of different sizes respectively. The table 11 is provided with'a corresponding series of annular grooves 24, 25, and 26 to receive respectively the lower ends of the cans of corresponding sizes.

which is adapted to lbe forced through the. ,can, fand -a cutting-edge 31 which4 is 'inf fclined `,in such direction that it will cut the can from theinside outwardly to cause the burr t o be onthe outside' of the can, yas shown 1n Fig. 6." This is an important being provided foreach of the"different-fv sizes A. of-cans.v Each cutter' is secured by'l characteristic, `because `when the can top has' been removed, ythe, 'entire contents can be discharged 4*from ,thelcan Thereis' no -ob struction result-ing i from an inwardly eX- tending burr," such as there vis 'when the 'cut 1s made mfan inward direction `or .when the The head"17 a body-section 17c and a tion 17I7 cutter-carrying secwhich 1s plvotallyconnected to the main portion of the head 17 byla pivot 34.v
Thepurpose of this pivotal connection is to permit the knife-carrying section 17b to be forced inwardly to cause the knife to puncture and enter the side ofthe can before commencing the rotating operation.` To facilitate the entry of each knife intothe can, it is provided with point 30. vAs the' cutter-head is rotated, the resistance of the is' divided, asas ing-t0 'fonti'.

The table 11 is secured to a spindle 36 which is vertically slidable in the bracket 10 and a hub 37 von the underside of the table 11 is provided with a cam 38 which engages a lifting cam 39 which is provided with a handle 39a and is rotatable around the spindle 36 to lift the table 11 so that the upper ends of cans of different sizes will be raised into their respective recesses in the rotary cutter-head. A lug 40 secured to the bracket 8 by a bolt, 41 extends througha notch 42 in the table 11 to hold the latter against rotation. l
The operationof the mechanism will be as follows: The bottom end of the can to be opened will be placed in the corresponding groove in the table 11 which willproperly position the can for entry into the corresponding recess in the cutter-head and hold the lower end against lateral movement' o n the table. Next, the handle 39 on the the can.
