To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, JOHN H. OLEGG, a
'citizenof the United States, and a resident of Suifern, in the county --of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dispensin Device for 001- v lapsible Containers, of w ich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to dispensing devices and has particular reference to an apparatus for dispensing goods packaged in collapsible containers, such as tubes of tooth paste, shaving cream, or the like.
As an object the invention contemplates an apparatus for conveniently housing, supporting and operating upon a collapsible tube to successively effect the discharge of a uniform requisite quantity of the contents thereof in order to eliminate waste by overfeeding of the contents and effect a savin ofbtime due to loss or misplacement of the tu e.
As a further object the invention contemplates in a device of the character described a closure for the discharge outlet and means operable upon the manipulation of the feeding means for opening the closure in advance of the exertion of pressure on the tube for expressing the contents therefrom, said feeding means further operating to close the closure upon its return movement to normal position.
As a still further object the invention contemplates in connection with a device of the character set forth means for successively effecting a uniform pressure on a collapsible tube which is automatically returned to a normal open position after the contents have been entirely discharged whereby to receive .and accommodate a fresh tube.
The invention furthermore aims to provide a device of the character described which is comparatively simple in its construction and operation, inexpensive to manufacture and produce and one which is thoroughly reliable and highly eflicient in its PQ P With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following spec-ification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, it being understood that the ri it is reserved to embodiments other than 51088 actually illustrated herein to the 1922. Referring to the drawings by characters the claims are exof reference, the device comprises a supporting base 10 which is preferably of hollow construction and is provided at its forward g lower end with a drip trough 11-. A conduit pipe 12 is arranged within the base 10 and is provided at its inner end with an upturned extremity 13 which extends upwardly throu hthe upper wall of the base and is interior y threaded as at 14' to receive the threaded discharge nozzle A-of a collapsible tube B. From the upturned extremity 13 the conduit tube 12 inclines downwardly and projects through the front wall of the base with the outer end thereof overlying the drip trough 11. An upstanding supporting bracket 15 is provided adjacent the rear of the base and said bracket is provided with superposed forwardly projecting bearing arms 16 and 17. Forceps are provided consisting of a pair of jaws 18 and 19 having pivotal connection and supported by a bolt 20 passing through the aligned ears 21 thereof and the forward end of the bearing arm 16. The jaws 18 and 19 depend from the bracket arm and are disposed at opposite sides of the collapsible tube or container B whereby relative movement thereof toward each other exerts a pressure upon the tube or container for expressing the contents thereof through the nozzle A and into the conduit tube 12. The jaws are respectively provided with upstanding extensions 22 and 23 which constitute actuating elements for effecting the closure of the jaws upon relative movement of the same away from each other. The. mechanism for successively eifectin relative separation of the extensions 22 an 23 consists of a transverse shaft 24 journaled in the forward end of the upper bearing arm 17 and the angle bracket 25 attached thereto. A pair of oppositely disposed cams 26 and 27 are secured to the shaft 24 between the bearing arm and bearing bracket for res ec I inner end as at 32 to the upper end of the supporting bracket 15. The manipulating lever is provided with apin or trunnion 33 which operates in an arcuate slot 34 of the arm 30, said slot being disposed concentric to the pivot 32 of'the manipulating lever. The conduit tube 12 is provided intermediate its ends with a cut-off valve'35 having an operating handle 36 which is connected by a connectin rod 37 to the manipulating lever 31.- A 0011 spring 38 encircles the pivot 32 and engages respectively at its opposite ends with the bearing arm 17 and the lever 31 to normally dispose the lever in its uppermost position against the upper stop or abutment 39. The lower stop or abutment 40 is designed to coact with the lever'upon downward movement to limit the downward swinging thereof. Preferably the operating mechanism and collapsible tube are housed by j a casing 41 which slides downwardly thereover and rests upon the top wall of the base. The front wall of the casing 41 is vertically slotted upwardly as at 42 from its lower end to receive and accommodate the handle 43 at the outer free end of the manip .ulating lever 31.
In use and operation of the device the collapsible tube or container B is associated with the device by threading its discharge or outlet nozzle A into the internally threaded upturned inner extremity of the conduit tube 12, said tube lying between the jaws 18 and19 of the forceps. To express the contents'from the tube or container B, the handle 43 of the manipulating lever is pressed downwardly. The pin or trunnion 33 opera ing in the arcuate slot 34 of the arm 30 I permits of an initial movement of the lever without effecting the movement ofthe arm 30 whereby through the connecting rod 37' the handle 36 of the valve 35 will be shifted to open the valve prior to the exertion of pressure by the jaws 18 and 19 on the tube or container B. When the pin 33 engages with the lower end of the slot 34'of the arm- 30, the said arm 30 will move downward with the lever until the same coacts with the lower stop or abutment 40. During the movement of the arm 30 by the lever the pawl 29 engaging with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 28 will turn the shaft 24 a predetermined distance, thereby effecting a relative separation of the'extensions 22 and 23 through the medium of the earns 26 and 27.
be returned to normal position, thus successively closing the valve 35 and finally efiecting a retrograde or counter clock-wise movement of the arm 30 by the engagement of the pin 33 with the upper end of the slot 34. The upward movement of the manipulating arm under the influence of the spring 38 will be arrested by the upper stop or abutment 39. A coil spring 44 encircles the pivot bolt 20 of the forceps with its opposite extremities 45 and 46 respectively-engaging the jaws 18 and 19 to effect their relative separation. When the tube or container B has been emptied the high points of the cams 26 and 2 will be disposed in a position to release the extensions 22 and 23 upon the next operation of the manipulating lever 31.
When this occurs the spring 44 will function to effect relative separation of the jaws 18 and 19 and the advancement of the extensions 22 and 23 toward each other where they will again coact with the cams for the purpose of successively and gradually effecting their separation and the advancement of the jaws 18 and 19 toward each other after a new or fresh tube or container B has been associated with the device.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that a simple and inexpensive apparatus has been provided for dispensing the contents of collapsible containers or tubes which effects an economy in the use of the contents thereof.
I claim:
In a device for dispensing substances packaged in collapsible containers, mechanism for exerting a pressure on the container comprising a pair of forceps, a. manipulating means operable to successively effeet the closure of said forceps, said manipulating means comprising extensions on the forcep jaws, a rotary shaft between said extensions, oppositely disposed cams on the shaft, a ratchet wheel secured to the shaft,
