To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, 'ALBERT F. KEFFLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at vlviuscatine, inthe county of Muscatine and 5 State of Iowa, have invented certain new l0 reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a novel improvement in machines for facing buttons,
particularly pearl buttons, and has especial reference to that type of machine in which'the buttonl blanks are carried in chucks, traveling in an endless series, and adaptedto present the blanks succes- In particular the invention is an improvement upon the machine shown in my Patent #1,205,453, dated November 21st, 1916.
The present invention provides novel 25 means whereby the button blanks may be ground or faced so as to have fiat or conveXed faces; and to enable machines of the character mentioned to be operated at higher speed; and as stated ininy said patent these 0 objects are accomplished by means of a novel 'attachment or improvementrwhich in brief comprises a horizontally disposed grinding disk located adjacent one end of the orbital path of the chucks, and adapted to operate upon a plurality of blanks'heldin different chucks as the latter travelpast and around the disk, said Vdisk being located relative to the line of travel of the chucks that the blanks held inthe chucks will be subjected 40 to the action of the grinding disk for a sufficient time to insure the desired cutting or dressing of the facesof theblankswithout overheating the same; and novel means are 'provided whereby the said grinding 'disk may be adjusted both vertically and laterally so as to operateproperly upon blanks for any desired thickness and size of lilies.
ln such machines the cliucksftravel to and from the grinding disk'at a rate of from forty-'tive to'fifty per minute; but by arranging the disk adjacent to one end of the orbit of ythe chucks and substantially concentric with such end of the orbit, the chucks will move circumferentially of the disk for part of their travel and can besubjected to the actionthereof a sutiicient time to enable the disk to properly face the vblanks without undue heating thereof.
The present invention has particular reference to the novel means whereby the desired various adjustments can be made and the parts held in adjusted positions, by use of two eccentricsleeves, by which the grinding disk may be supported and maintained in any desired position, said sleeves being respectively independently adjustable rotatorially of the main shaft or center by any suitable means, preferably by manually operated worm gears. Further object of the invention is to provide novel means for lubricating the movable parts; and novel means for removing the dust.
l will explain the invention in detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, to enable others skilled in the art to manufacture and use the same; and summarize in the claims the essential features and combinations of parts for which protection is desired.

To disk 5 is connected a belt pulley 5* which may be driven by a belt from a pulley on the driven shaft of the machines; as in my said patent so that the grinding disk may be rotated at the desired speed when the machine is in op-v eration.

The chucks may be elevated-by the usual cam track as they come beneath the grinding disk as explained in my said patent, so
that the ring 6 will properly operate upon and face each blank as it passes around the disk, and while such blanks are movedV around the abrasive disk by the chucks the blanks are also gradually fed upwardly toward thedisk, by means ofthe guide or cam track upon which the chucks are supported as usual in this type of machine, and as explained in my said patent thus enabling the disk to gradually reduce the blanks to the desiredthickness vand surface contour, as they travel past the disk, as de scribed inl my said patent. v j
The diameter of the ring 6 is such that it will preferably coincide with or only be slightly eccentric to the arc, or circle trav# ersed by the chucks in passing around the shaft A, or to that portiony of the orbital travel of the chucks concentric to the shaft. By adjusting either or both ofthe sleeves 1 and 2 theV disk 6 can be adjusted laterally of shaft A; and can thus be adjusted eccentrically to the shaft A, and held in any desired positionvwhen adjusted; by means of the aforesaid worm gearing, which prevents any backplay and'holds bothl sleeves 1 and 2 fixedly in adjusted position relative to the shaft A and consequently relative to the travel of the chucks beneath the disk 6. The grinding disk can be readily adjusted to compensate for wear of the grinding ring and to enable the disk to operate efficiently and properly upon any desired size or line of blanks.
The means foradjusting the disk by the worm gearing and eccentric sleeves is avery decided lpractical improvement upon the rocking or swinging adjustment of the disk f shown in Vmy aforesaid patent.
In the construction shown an oil cup 8 is attached to the lower end of the sleeve 2 and extends above the collar 2c so that the bearing of the sleeve can be kept thoroughly lubricated at all times.
I'also provide a dust hood or casing composed of anupper cylindric member 9 which loosely surrounds the hub or pulley 5e above the disk 5 and issupported on the machine in any `suitable var-C This member; .9 has vldepending 'flangev 9a on its periphery which vfor the entry ofthe chuck ends and'topermit the chucks to be lifted v.up sufficiently toengage the blanks with the grinding disk 16, which is enclosed inthe hood as'shown inFig. 1. j
The hood is preferably"provided with a Vent or outlet opening 9f which may be connected by a pipe, not shown, to a suitable suction apparatus, not shown, whereby the dust produced by the grinding operations is withdrawn from the machine.
'Ihe hood 9 is preferably hung in any de' sired manner from arms 15s extending radially from the casting 15, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, so as to support said hood 9 in proper relation to the grinding disk 6, the manner in which said hood is hung forming no part of the present invention.
The sleeves 1 and 2 and grinding disk 5 might be adjusted vertically by the means suggested in my aforesaid patent, but preferably instead of using that particular means I provide the upper end of sleeve 1 with a collar 1b concentric to shaft A, and with an annular groove 1c in the upper end of the sleeve below the collar 1b. The collar 1 is engaged in an annular recess 15k in the castings 15, there being a flange l5 at the bottom of the recess which enters the groove 1c and supports the flange 1b.
Upon the shaft A above the sleeve 1 is a short sleeve 10 which has a flange 10a on its lower end which engages the recess 15k and underlies the flange 15m at the top of the recess 15k, whereby the castings 15 are hung upon the collar 10. This collar 10 may be slidably suspended on the shaft A by any suitable means as by a pin 10C passed through a slot A2 in shaft A and suspended by a rod 10d passing through a central bore 10E3 in the shaft A (such as described in my said patent) or by other means whereby the rod and collar may be readily vertically ad'- justed to raise and lower the sleeves 1 and 2 and parts carried thereby.
That I claim is:
1. In a button grinding machine the combination of a shaft, a rotatable sleeve eccentrically mounted on said shaft, a second sleeve eccentrically mounted on the first sleeve and a grinding disk rotatably positioned on the second sleeve.
2. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 1, means for adjusting the grinder longitudinally of the shaft.
3. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 1, means for independently adjusting the sleeves relatively to the shaft and to each other.
4l. In combination with mechanism as'set 'forth/m yclaim 1, a wormgearon each sleeve 'and a worm fixed relatively' to 'and' engaging each gear,'wher`eby each sleeve may be rotatorially adjusted independently of `the other sleeve and shaft. l
5. In combination with mechanism asset vforth in claim' 1,.means for independently adjusting the sleeves relatively to the'shaft and to eachother andA means for vertically adjusting'the sleeves and grinder on" the shaft.
6. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 1, a dust hood enclosing the grinding disk and provided with openings for the presentation of the blanks by the chucks to the grinding disk and for withdrawing the dust from the hood.
7. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 1, a worm gear on each sleeve and a worm fixed relatively to the gear for engaging the gear, whereby each sleeve may be rotatorially adjusted independently of the other sleeve and shaft, and means for vertically adjusting the sleeves and grinder on the shaft.
8. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim l, a collar slidably mounted on the shaft above the sleeves, means suspending the collar, and means for rotatably suspending the sleeves on said collar, substantially as described.
9. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 1, a bracket surrounding the shaft and having an annular recess engaging a flange on the sleeve, a collar on the shaft having a flange engaging a recess in the said bracket, and means for adjusting the collar on the shaft whereby the sleeves are adjusted on the shaft therewith.
10. In combination a shaft, a sleeve, a bracket surrounding the shaft above the sleeve and having an annular recess engaging a flange on the sleeve, a collar on the shaft above the sleeve having a flange engaging a recess in the said bracket, and means for adjustably supporting the collar whereby the sleeve is rotatably suspended on the collar and adjusted therewith.
11. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 10, a second sleeve eccentrically mounted on the first mentioned sleeve, a grinder rotatably positioned on the second sleeve, and means for independently adjusting the sleeves relatively to the shaft and to each other.
12. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 10, a second sleeve eccentrically mounted on the first mentioned sleeve, a worm gear on each sleeve, and a worm engaging the gears, whereby each sleeve may be rotatorially adjusted independently of the other sleeve and shaft.
18. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 10, a second sleeve eccentrillO and means -for vertically adjusting the sleeves on the shaft.v
I5. In combination with mechanism as set forth in claim 10, a grinder `rotatably mounted on said sleeve, a dust hood enclosing the grinder and provided with openings for the presentation *of the blanks bythe chucks to the grinder and for withdrawing the dust from'the hood.
