ILLUMINATED EMBLEM.
Application filed April 5, 1924. Serial ITO. 704,548.
To all whom it may concern:
Be ,it known that 1, JOHN W. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the countyof Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates .to improvements in illuminated emblems and more particularly to an electrically illuminated folding em-' blem.
An important object of the invention is to provide improved means for holding the sections of the folding emblem in assembled relation and for establishing between these sections electrical contact for completing the circuit of the illuminating elements carried by these sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved combined hinging and locking structure for connecting the sections.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation showing an emblem constructed in accordance with my invention;

Referring now more partlcularly to the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a cross constructed in accordance with my the cross is formed of and the cross arm tions C arranged. upon opposite sides of the section B and in alignment with one another. The sections A and B are held in aligned relation b a clamping plate 12 which is arrange upon the opposite side face of the sections from the huge 10 and is secured to one of the sections at one end by a securing element 13 attaching the one leaf of the hinge 10 to this section. The opposite end of the plate 12 projects beyond the end of the section to which it is attached and has formed therein a notch 14. The securing means for the other of the leaves of the hinge 10 includes a bolt 15' extending completely through the associated section an held in position by a countersunk nut 16. This bolt, as the sections A and B are swung into aligned relation, extends through the notch 14 of the plate 12 for engagement by a clamping thumb nut 17. When the thumb nut 17 is tightened the sections are rigidly held in aligned relation.
One of the sections C has pivoted thereto upon the vertical face thereof a bar 18 and the other of the sections C at a'point equidistantly spaced from the pivot of the bar, when the sections are in aligned relation or in parallel relation, has a headed element 19 mounted therein. The bar 18 at a point similarly spaced from the pivot has formed in one edge thereof a notch 20 adapted to engage this securing element beneath the head thereof. This bar thus forms a means for securing the sections C to one another either in aligned or in parallel relation. Each of the sections A, B and Chas mounted thereon sockets 21 for the reception of electrical illuminating elements. The section A has further mounted thereon a switch 22. Each section has embedded therein in the course of construction a pair of lead f wires 23, each wire forming one side of a circuit for the socket of an illuminating element and in the case of the section A one of these wires is connected through the switch 22 so that this circuit may be broken.
Electrical connections between sections are established as follows At the hinged connection of two sections one wire 23 of each section is brought into electrical connection with the attached leaf of the bin e 10 or 11 as the case may be,- as indicate at 24. The other wire ofone of the hinged sections is electrically connected to a spring-pressed plunger projecting through the wall of the section which is opposed by a wall of the section whenthe two sections are in operative relation, that is to say, the relation in which the desired emblem is formed. The other wire of the other of the sections is led to a contact plate 26 mounted upon the corresponding face of the other section at a point where it will be engaged by the spring-pressed plunger 25. It will be obvious that when the sections are moved into operative position the circuits thereof will be completed and illuminating elements mounted in the sockets will be rendered active. This system of connection permits the completed emblem to be folded to very compact form so that it may be readily transported from place to place. It will be further obvious that the construction herein shown is capable of a considerable range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself to such s ecific structure as hereinbefore set fort claimed.
I claim 1. A plurality of sections connected by hinges formed of conducting material swingable about the hinges thereof to a position where they combine to define an emblem or to a position where they are compacted for transportation, sections hinged to one another having portions abutting when the sections are in the emblem forming position,
a socket for an electric illuminating element,
except as hereinaftercircuit wirin for the socket carried by each section, the hinges connecting the sections electrically connecting the circuits at one side, and coacting contacts carried by said abutting portions for connecting the circuits at the opposite side.
2. A plurality of sections connected by hinges formed of conducting material swingable about the hinges thereof to a position where they combine to define an emblem or to a position where they are compacted for transportation, sections hinged to one another having portions abutting when the sections are in the emblem forming position, a socket for an electric illuminating element, circuit wiring for the socket carried by each section, the hinges connecting the sections electrically connecting the circuits at lone side, and coacting contacts carried by said abutting portions for connecting the circuits at the opposite side, one of said coacting contacts comprising a spring-pressed plunger. the other of said contacts comprising a plate embedded in the surface of its section.
3. In a collapsible emblem, a stem section, a pair of sections hinged to thestem section at opposite sides thereof and swingable about the hinges thereof to parallel the stem section or to positions where theyf align one with the other and are disposed at, an angle to the sections, and common means for locking said sections in both of said positions.
