UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY T. ANDERSON, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T SOREN HANSSON, 0F BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
METHOD OF MAKING BRAKE LEVERS.
Application filed May 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Brake Levers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to brake-levers and method of making same.
The object of my invention is to provide abrake-lever which is strong and durable in construction, as well as a simple and efficient method for making same.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved brake-lever is formed; Fig. 2 is an end view of same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the above blank after it has been subjected to a rolling and forging process to reduce the diameter of the end portions; Fig. 4: is an end view of same; Fig. 5 is a plan view of a drop-forge die for bringing the metal to the required shape; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the finished brake-lever; and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7, Fig. 6.
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a blank of suitable length and diameter for forming my improved brake-lever. This blank. having been heated, is subjected to a rolling and forging process whereby the elongated blank is produced tapering both ways from the portion 2 remains of the original diameter of the blank. The tapered blank is then placed in a suitable bottom forging die l, shown in dotted lines Fig. 7, and the upper die l, such as shown in Fig. 3, is lowered and the blank is dropforged to produce the brake-lever shown in Fig. 6, with the exception of the trimming and drilling t give it the proper finish and to provide it with the end eyes 6 and 7 and the intermediate eye 8, for attachment to a brake-lever gear in the wellknown manner, the portion of the brakelever at and adjacent to the intermediate eye 8 being wider than the ends of the lever,
1922. Serial No. 560,166.
as that portion is formed from the greatest diameter 2 of the elongated blank 3.
The pair of dies by which the drop-forging operation is accomplished are of such form as t produce in the finished brakelever the flanges 9 on one side and the flat face 10 on the opposite side.
One of the features of my in'iproved brake-lever is having the flat face 10 which bears against the round brake-rod, giving an even wearing surfac on the brake-lever as distinguished from the flanges usually extending along the edges of the brakelever which were more readily worn by contact with the brake-rods, adjacent portions of the car structure, etc, and forming grooves therein, while by having a flat face there is a greater surface of direct contact with the round brake-lever-guide.
What I claim is:
1. The method of manufacturing brakelevers having three longitudinally spaced points of pivotal support which consists in heating a blank of suitable length and thickness, rolling and forging said blank, whereby said blank is elongated and the original thickness of metal is preserved at its intermediate point of pivotal support and the metal tapers from that point toward both ends, and dropforging the elongated blank to form the finished brake-lever.
2. The method of manufacturing brakelevers having three longitudinally spaced points of pivotal support which consists in heating a blank of suitable length and thickness, elongating the blank by rolling and forging, whereby said blank is elongated and the original thickness of the blank at its intermediate point of pivotal support is preserved and the metal tapered from that point to each end, the point of original thickness being nearer to one end than the other, and drop-forging the blank to produce the finished brake-lever.
In testimony whereof I, the said HARRY T. ANDnRsoN, have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY T. ANDERSON.
