PRESS.
Application led April 14, 1922. Serial No. 552,487.
To @ZZ Iwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and 5 State or Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Presses, ot' Which the following description, in Connection with the aeeompanying drawings, is a speciiication, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in presses for making compressed units from plastic masses. It has among its objects, the provision ot' a compact arrangement of a plurality oit instrumentalities for forming the units and one in Which the strains incident to the operation of the instrumentalities are reduced to a minimum. The invention7 however, will be best understood 'from :0 the following description When read in light of the accompanying drawing of one specilic embodiment ot my invention selected for illustrative purposes, While its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 shows a central longitudinal section of a` machine constructed according to my invention Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
vFig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of FigjQ;
ltig. is a detail ot' part ol' the mechanism n tor operating the plungers; and
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sections on the lines .f3- 5, 6 6 and 7 7 of Fig. 4:.
Referring to the drawings, Which show the n embodiment of my invention selected for .o illustration, I have indicated a mold press of the type shown in my Patent 1,003,561, granted to me September 19., 1911. The press now to be described in common with that shown in my patent includes a base upon which is positioned a cylinder 1 of cir cular cross-section and containing a vertically reciprocable piston of similar crosssection. ,This piston in my present invention is split longitudinally on a diametrical io plane into two equal rams 3 of the same ei fective cross-sectional area. Each ram is used for pressing material in a mold to be described.
Rising from the cylinder 1 are columns i5 5, which support a bulkhead 7 above the cylinder. The columns in my present em bodiment are our in number andare 'uni'- formly distributed aroundthe cylinder.`
is disclosed in my patent above 'referred to, in the bulkhead I support a mold block 9 on Whichis mountedthe sliding head 11. In my presentinvention the mold block'is provided with a plurality of mold chambers 13 of number corresponding to the number ot rams 3 and as 'herein shown tWo such mold chambers and Arams are provided.
Cooperating with the mold chambers 13 are mold plungers'l, each of 'which carries a plunger capv 1X7, which lits a mold chamber and reciprocates therein.
rIlhe mold plungers'are supported on the ejecting heads 19, being separated therefrom by the distance blocks 21 and secured thereto by meansof the tie bolts 23. The ejecting heads 19 are movable relatively to the rams7 being for this purpose supported tor reciprocation on the ejecting head guides 25. The ejecting head guides are carried on the rams and are secured thereto by means of stud bolts Q7 (Fig. 1) carried by the` rams and passing through the flanges 29 ofthe ejecting head guides. For convenience in assembly, the ejector heads are split on longitudinal planes to provide tivo parts which are secured together by means of bolts 3l passing through the ears 33 carried by the ejector heads.
In my present invention I have shown the sliding head 11 provided With a central 1ocated diaphragm 35, which divides the through passage of said head into a plurality of passages each leading to a mold chamber 13. Extending through the through passage of the sliding head is a feed neck v37 Which leads from a hopper or other suitable source of supply of plastic material to be fed to the chambers.
is Will be understood from my patent above referred toj the sliding head is reciprocated to open the mold chambers and permit the plastic material to enter said chambers, the parts under these conditions beingv in the positions illustrated by Fig. Q. After the mold chambers are charged with material the sliding head is moved to close. the molds, whereupon the rams are lcaused to rise to force the plungers 15 into the mold chambers and compress the material therein. The sliding head is then given a furtherl movement in the same direction yso as to uncover the mold chambers, whereupon the plungers are further raised in the same direction from the intermediate position just described to a final position which acts to force the contents of the mold chambers out of said chambers. The sliding head and plunger are then again moved into the initial position illustrated by Fig. 2 and the operation repeated.
For causing actuation of the rams the space beneath the same is filled with a liquid,
' the pressure of which is caused to be raised and lowered by the reciprocations of the displacement member 39.` The liquid tends to escape around the outer surface of the rams, which tends to press the rams toward eachv other and thereby prevent relative movement between them. To eliminate this effect I so form the adjacent surfaces of the rams as to provide the chamber 41 which extends' entirely across the cylinder and into which liquid may find its way and act outwardly to oppose the inwardly acting pressure. The contacting` surfaces of the rams above and below the chamber 41 are ground to provide as nearas possible a fluid tight joint. It will be understood, however, that I may admit pressure liquid to the chamber 41 by conduit means other than that'shown or if desirable may employ other means for neutralizing to the desired extent the pressure of the liquid against the outer surfaces of the rams by admitting liquid between them.
For moving the plungers to eject the material from the molds I provide the arms or levers 43, one being provided for each ejector head and the two being loosely mounted in side by side. relation on a rock shaft 45.` This rock shaft is journalled in brackets 46 (Fig. 1) which are supported in any convenient manner to a fixed part of the machine, and is oscillated by means of the lever 47 which is fixed to the rock shaft and carries at its end a 'cam roller 49 cooperating with the camV 51. The lever 47 is provided with an arm 52, which is located beneath a lug 53 carried by the upper arm 43 as viewed in Fig. 6. The shaft 45 also carries in fixed relation thereto an arm 55 similar to the arm 52 of the lever 47, the arm 55 being positioned beneath the lug 53 of the lower arm 43 as viewed in Fig. 6. It' will be noticed by this construction that when the cam 5l is in operation, the lever' 47 rocks the shaft 45, which causes the arms 43 to oscillate.
Each arm 43 carries at its end a pivoted block 57 in contact with the under face 59 lof the ejecting heads. It will thus be noted that the blocks 57 and arms 43 constitute an abutment for determining the lowermost position of the mold plungers and therefore determine the amount of material which may pass into the mold chambers.
For determining the lowermost position of the blocks 57 the arms 43 are perforated at 61 and through the perforations are passed rods 63 each of which carries at its lower end a buffer spring 65 supporting a buffer plate 67. The arms 43 in their lowermost position rest on the buffer plates.
For adjusting the abutments afforded by the buffer plates 67, each rod 63 has secured to its upper end an eccentric strap 69 cooperating with an eccentric 71. Rotation of the ecceiitrics in an obvious manner acts to raise or to lower the buffer plates 67. For supporting the eccentrics 71 and for rotating them, one of said eccentrics, namely the lower eccentric as viewed in Fig. 5 is carri ed by a sleeve 73, while the upper eccentric is carried on Va shaft 75 which passes through said sleeve. The shaft is journalled in a bearing 77 carried by one of the columns while the sleeve is journalled in a similar bearing 77 carried by an opposite column 5. The end of the shaft 75 projects beyond the sleeve and carries an arm 79, while the adjacent end of the sleeve carries a similar arm 81. Each arm 79 and 31 carries at its end and in pivotal relation the-reto a nut 83. Through each nut 83 eX- tends the screw threaded end 85 of a rod 87 which is held against longitudinal movement by a thrust collar 39 carried by a fixed part of the machine and which rod may be rotated by means of a hand wheel 91. it will thus be seen that by means of the hand wheels 91, the operator may, whether the press is in operation or not, adjust the lowermost position of either of the plungers and thereby determine the amount of material that passes into the mold chambers.
It will be understood that when the arms or levers 43 raise the mold plunger-s to eject the compressed material from the molds, the movement of said plungers must be sufficient to raise the material to the upper edges 92 of the mold chambers in order that the sliding head may carry the compressed material away from the mold chambers. To compensate for variations in the thickness of the plunger caps 17 and to adjust them with relation to the upper edge 92, each lever 43 carries a wedge 93 which is dovetailed at 95 into the lower side ofthe lug 53 of said levers. Each wedge 93 carries an upstanding end portion 95 through which passes a stud bolt 97 secured to the side of the lug 53 as is clearly illustrated by Fig. 4. rlhe lower faces of the wedges rest on semi-cylindrical blocks 99. carried in semicylindrical recesses 101 on the arms 55. Extending through each block 99 are a pair of bolts 103, which by means of the springs 105, act to yieldingly hold the blocks in the recesses 101. It will be vnoted that as I provide a rocking support for the blocks 99, the upper surface of said blocks will always present a maximum of area in contact with the lower surface of the wedge It will be noticed that by the abo-ve construction l have provided a compact arrangement for compressing material into a plurality of closely adjacent molds and one which permits the bulkhead and other parts to be of minimum size and that by concentrating the thrust against the bulkhead, the same need have but a minimum span.
Although l have described for purposes of illustration one specific embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that l am not limited thereby to its specific mechanical details but that within the scope of my invention wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
