UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. SCI-IRANZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB 'IO WALTER VJ'OOD, TRADING AS 13.. D. W'OOD 86 COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEEDING DEVICE FOR G-AS PRODUCERS.
Application filed November 4, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAnLns SGHRANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Feeding Devices for Gas Producers, of which the followii'ig is a specification.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a device for feeding coal, or other fuel, to gas producers s that the fuel can be distributed evenly over the surface of the fuel bed of the producer, or can be directed towards the center or the outer edge, or between the center and the outer edge, as desired.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a gas producer, illus trating my improved feeding device mounted on the top plate;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; and
Fig. at is a side View illustrating the means for adjusting the deflectors.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is the top plate of a producer made in any suitable manner. In the present instance the top plate is fixed and the body portion rotates. 3 is the base on which the feeding device is mounted and it has an opening 4 for the passage of fuel into the interior of the producer. 5 is the feeding device having a. cylindrical casing 6. Extending through this casing is a shaft 7 on which is a five-vaned drum 8, which carries the coal from the hopper 9 to the discharge spout 10, which is directly above the opening 1 in the top plate of the gas producer. On the shaft- 7 is a ratchet wheel 27, which is engaged by a pawl 11 on an arm 11. This arm is loosely mounted on the extended hub of the ratchet wheel 27, in the present instance. Attached to a short arm 12, secured to the arm 11. is a connecting rod 13, which is attached to a. pin 14 on a bevel gear wheel 15, which meshes with a gear wheel 16 on a driven shaft 17. The wheel is mounted on a shaft 18 and the two shafts 17 and 18 are supported by a bearing 19.
Located in the lower portion of the feeding device 5 are two horizontal shafts 20 and 21. The shaft 20 has a handle 22 and Serial No. 512,790.
the shaft 21 has a handle 23. On the shaft 20 is a deflector 24c and on the shaft 21 is a deflector 25. The automatic coal feeder is placed off center on the top plate of the gas producer. When the deflectors are in the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 3, and, as the body portion of the producer rotates, small quantities of fuel are discharged onto the body of fuel in a ring area equal to the width of the drum, which width, however, is considerably less than the radius of the producer.
In order to spread the fuel uniformly over the interior radius of the fuel bed area. the deflector plates 24; and 25 can be turned by hand independently of each other to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 3., so as to deflect a portion of the stream of fuel towards the center of the producer and a portion towards the outer side of the body of fuel in the producer. By this construction, the fuel is evenly distributed over the entire fuel bed.
I claim:
1. The combination in a gas producer, of
a rotating body portion; a fixed top plate having a feed opening therein; a feeding device for feeding material through the opening in the top plate; and two horizon tal shafts, each having a handle and each having a depending deflector so that, on turning the shafts, the deflectors can be adjusted in order to distribute the fuel over the fuel bed of the producer as the body portion rotates.
2. The combination in a gas producer. of a rotating body portion; a fixed top plate having a feed opening therein at one side of the center of the producer; a feeding device consisting of a water cooled casing having a rotating vaned drum therein and a hopper; means for intermittently rotating the drum, the casing having a discharge passage above the feed opening in the top plate; and two independent horizontal shafts, each having manual operating means and each having a flat faced deflector extending through the opening in the top plate, the deflectors being so proportioned that on adjusting the deflectors the fuel can be distributed over the fuel bed of the producer.
