PUTTEE-CLUB HAHDLE.
' Application filed September 27, 1921. Serial No. 503,605.
To all/whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HUN'I'LY GORDON, subject of the King of England, and resident of F ontainebleau, France (postoflice address Hotel du Palais), have inventgrasp when the player prepares 'to hit the ball.
The object of my invention is certain improvements relating to the handle of putter clubs, such improvements being calculated and designed to do away with the said inconvenience, fault or drawback.
In order to make the following explanation as plain and clear as possible, I have appended hereto, as an' example of an embodiment of my invention a drawing illustrating a shaft provided with an improvement according to my invention and in the said drawing,
Figure l is a side elevation of the putter;
Figure 2 is a front view of the shaft;
Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are larger scale sections of the putter.
As shown by the above mentioned figures the putter club consists of a shaft and handle the sections of which are of various diameter and shapes as illustrated by Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
The shaft has near its end a grip or handle B which is of rather flattened rectangular section and the edges of which are rounded at C, Figure 8.
Suitably spaced from the shaft end E, 1s a somewhat dee groove D, of suitable length, which permits location of the thumbs when the player, grasping the grip, or handle has placed the club head on top on the ground and, laying the line along which hte ball is to run, is preparin to hit the ball.
As will be rea y realized due to the groove D, the club cannot' shift since the players two thumbs engage it and it becomes almost impossible for the player to miss as frequently happens with round lps.
. It should be understood that I reserve the right to make handles of various sizes according to requirements.
What I claim is: 1. An improved putter consistin putter head and a handle, said han e comprising a shaft having its up er portion terminatmg, in an enlarged su tantially rec tangular grip portio havin the edges thereof slightly rounded, one of the flat faces of said rectangular grip portion being located in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the striking face of the putter head and being provided with a longitudinally extending open groove in which the thumbs of the player may be longitudinally inserted to stea y .the club and prevent shifting or de-, viation thereof while theplayer is stroking the ball.
2. An improved putter consistin of a putter head and a handle, said hand e comprisi a shaft having its upper portion terminatmg in an enlarged substantially rec'- tangular grip portion, having the edges thereof slightly rounded, one of the at faces of said rectangular grip portion being located in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the striking face of the putterhead and being provided with a longitudinally extendrng open groove, said groove being of sufliclent length to permit the longitudinal insertion of the thumbs of both of the players hands when the club is grasped, thereby preventing shifting or deviation of the club while the player is stroking the ball.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two sub HUN TLY GORDON.
scribin witnesses.
