Application filed-November 23, 1922. Serial No. 602,688.'
To all whom 'it may colwewi-L:
- a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalai'nazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in Bumpers, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to more particularly to the means for connecting together the central portions-ot bumpers comprising a. plurality of verticallyspaccdfront or impact bars or plates` and an intermediate auxiliary orfrear-b'ar or plate. The general ob]ect of the invention 1s to provide a device for'connecting' tlie said bars orV plates which is particularlyv eiicieiit in operation which will provide anonrattling con'- nection between ,the partsgand one which will perniit the use of syn'imetrical and interjl'changeable members. Iac'coinplish thetoregoing general objects, as well as others which will appear hereinafter, -in and through the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Fig. .l represents a plan view ot a bumper of the type referred to herein, having myinvention applied there to; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the aforesaid bumper; Fig. 3 an enlarged central sectional detail through -the bumper -and clamping means shown in the preceding views; Fig. llA
a detail in plan View of the parts shown in Fig.- 3 and F ig. 5 a detail in elevation of the front' or outer member of the clamping device.
Describing the various parts by reference characters, 1 denotes the vertically spaced 40 kmain plates or bars of a bumper, the said bars extending the full width of the bumper andeach being .curved rearwardly at its ends, asindicated at la. 3 denotes the rear or auxiliary bar, the bar -3 being preferably 'straight throughoutits length and being shown asconnected at its ends to the ends of the front or main bars by means of caps 4, to which the ends of the bars or plates are secured in any desired manner, the details of such connection forming no part of the invention sought to be protected herein. The bumper as a whole is shown as supported from the arms or members 5 by means of clamps 6, which are a'djustablyl mounted upon the rear orauxiliary bar 3 and pivotbumpers, and
gagey the upper flange 8", while the upper ally connected to 'thefront ends of the arms Be it known that I, lVArNi-i E. DUNSTON,
5, as indicated at 7. For .the purpose of connectiilg the central portion of the rear or auxiliary bar to the central portions of the front or main bars, I provide a clamp consisting generally of a -front; or outer seating inember 8, and apair of inner or rearwardly extendingclamping members, each indicated generally at 9.
The member 8 is in the general forin'o a shallow channel havingv the web 8a thereof presented rearwardly or toward the vehicle, th'e ia'nges Sli being preferably flared outwardly and provided each' with a lateral ezt-j` tension or projection 8, the rear or inner face of each such projection being adapted to bear against the front oroutwardly-presented .-face ofamai'n -bar 1.4 When assembled, the low'e'r edge of the "upper main'A bar will enedge of the lower main bar will engage the lower flange 8", .thefront 'or outer faces of the bars engaging the adjacent surfaces of the projections 8.` 1
In 'addition to the projections 8, the meniber 8 is provided, rearwardly of such projections, with a pai.` of projections 8, each being carried by a flange 8b and having its rear or inner face 'preferably constituting an extension of the eorrespondii'ig-face of the web 8a.' The front or outer face of each projection 8d is inwardly or rearwardly beveled from the' flange 8, as indicated at 8*. The
purpose of this construction will be explained in connection with the two rear clamping members, which will now be described. 'Y l Each of the rear clamping members con-. sists generally of a. body 9 iaving depending iianges 9 at each side thereof. At their inner or rear edges, each `of thesemembers is .provided with. va notched or charuieledv 'seat 9*,v-tlie seats jointly receiving the up -per-,and the' lower edge-of the auxiliary'bar or plate V3. At its outer or front end, each 1 member 9 is provided with a. flange 9 Ywhich is adapted to beinserted between-the rear or inner face of a bar or tion 8". The portion of each flange 9 which engages the beveled'face of its pro'ection l Sd's also preferably beveled, as in icated at l Eachv ot the members 9 is provided -with an opening 9e in the central portion' thereof, with a seat 9r surrounding' such opening. 1
plate l and s. projec- *A engage the other nection between the front and the rear plates convenienty 4vI claimis:
v1. A clamping gether the vertically spaced impact bars and bolt 10 extends through'these.openings the plate l will bewedged against the {ianges or projections 8 through the actionv of the wedgedsurfaces 9d and 8. The frontV member 8 is provided with a -pair of tapped openings 8' for the appli- "cation of-a. name plate thereto .within the channeled seat provided by such member.
The construction disclosed herein is simple andeconomic'al of production, but is particularly eilicient in securing a firm conor bars of the bumper; it can be readily and applied to the said bars or pla-tes; an :it will-prevent the rattling of the various parts'when in-use.
Having thus'described my invention, what device for securing tothe intermediate and laterall spaced auxiliarybar o '-abumper, said evice comprising a member having u ing' portions, for thea jacent edges-of the main bars, a pair of members each having a 'portion adapted to engage an impact bar and forma seat therefor with the cooperatingfseating portion of the lirst member, each of the'flast two members also having a seat for' an edge of the intermediate auxiliary bar, and means intermediate of the endsot the last two members for adjusting the same toward eachother.
