IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,609, dated May 5, 1874; application filed January 7, 1874.
o To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. POWELL, of Portland, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in feather-Strips for Doors, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in that class of weather-strips which are secured to the lower outer faces of liousedoors, for the purpose of excluding dust and rain when the door is closed, by closing the space between the door and the threshold, its object being to provide an improved and simplified form of lifter spring, and, where there are double doors, to provide a device for closing down the strip without being obliged to use a stop on the threshold. The invention consists in a device for closing by pressure at the jamb of the door, so as to render it applicable to double doors.

In the drawing, G is a strip of molding secured to the lower part of the outer face of the door, and to its lower edge is hinged, by means of wire loops and staples, a Wooden iiap, C1, having cemented to its inner face a strip of rubber cloth, G2, pendent from its lower edge. Where the strip is applied to double doors, a bent or angular plate, D, is pivoted at o to the inner end of the molding C, while its outer end is engaged with an eye, d, at the upper inner edge of the flap O1. At the heel of the plate D is a projection, e, which, when the door is closed, strikes against a screw or a metal plate in the jalnb, causing the other end of said plate to lift and swing the flap, so as to close its rubber strip against the threshold. In the ordinary way of applying the springs to weather-strips they offered so much resistance to the closing of the door as to force the latter back in its frame from the jainb, and thus open a larger crack at each side than it closed at the threshold, Wh ile in this way the spring is sufficiently resilient to lift oi'er but little resistance.
Heretofore it has not been practicable to apply weather-strips to double doors Without putting a projection on. the threshold, at the middle thereof, to arrest the aps. By means of the lever-plate D acting by end pressure the flap is closed easily.
What vI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the molding C and ap (3,1, of the angular plate D, pivoted to said moldin g, an d coupled to said ap, the said plate being provided with the projection e and spring o, all constructed substantially as described.
