Description

Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
I UNITED ST ATES' PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DREYFUS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND;
MANUFACTURE OR TREATMENT-OF THREADS OF ARTIFICIAL FILAMENTS.
h No Drawing.
'Manufacture or Treatment of' Threads of "or. treatmentof Artificial Filaments, of which the following;
is a specification. Y
This invention relates to the manufacture threads or'yarns consisting of or comprisin filaments of cellulose acetate or other as lulose' esters, ethers or derivatives, produced by the dry or evaporative method, that is to say, by extruding a solution of the cellulosic derivative or derivatives through fine orifices into the air or I an evaporative atmosphere, to form filaments by eva oration of solvent, and associating the fi aments into threads continuously with their formation, with or without twisting, but especially with simultaneous twistin It is ficial silk yarns or threads in general for the purpose of weaving and other textile operations. This involves the complication and expense of separate operations and machinery, and requires great care in performance. In the case of artificial threads of a cellulose character, such as those made from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose and the like by wet coagulation, the operation of sizing is very delicate, especially as these threads are very weak in a wet state, and various,treatments or measures have been proposed for overcoming this difficulty with such artificial yarns or threads.
' It has now been found that the operation of sizing-can be combined as one operation with the production of threads or yarns of cellulose acetate or other esters, ethers or derivatives of cellulose by the dry or evaporative method, by applying the sizing or adhesive dressing to the threads'or yarns of associated filaments in their travel to the de: vices on which they are wound as produced.
This is very surprising, as is might have been expected that 1n such a case the threads would stick together when wound up on the wind-up devices. a
By means of the invention the complication and difficulties involved in sizing the yarns or threads as a separate subsequent peration can be dispensed with, and consider-- able economy in manufacture be effected.
An important advantage is likewise atinown that it is necesary to size arti Application fi led December v19, 1923. Serial No. 681,666.
tained b the invention in the following respect. hreads or yarns of cellulose acetate or other esters or ethers of cellulose usually require a relatively high twist to enable themto withstand the textile operations of weaving, machine knitting etc., owing to their liability to lose elasticity in these 0perations or to hair or fluff by breakage of individual filaments in these operations, and hairing or fiuffing may also occur in the imparting of relatively high twist to the threads or yarns. The higher the twist, the less, of course, is the covering power of the yarn in the fabrics. It has been found that by sizin the threads or yarns as hereinbefore exp ained, it'is not necessary toimpart so high a twist to them to preserve the necessary elasticity and. strength for weaving or other textile operations, and thus the arns or threads canhave a greater covermg power. Also the tendency to hairing or flufiing of the yarns or threads during the twisting and winding can be obviated or greatly reduced.
' The invention is particularly applicable for employment in connection with processes and apparatus wherein the threads produced by the dry or evaporating method are led out of the metier or chamber in which they are produced, and wound up, with or without twisting, on devices situated outside the same, andespecially where the threads travelling from the metiers or chambers in which they are produced are simultaneously twistedand wound by cap spinning devices outside the same.
The threads or yarns sized or dressed ac cording to the invention may be employed as warp threads in weaving or knitting, or for weft, or generally for any mechanical or other textile operations.
In carrying out the invention any a propriate means may be employed for app ying the sizing or adhesive dressing to the travelling threads. For example, the threads travelling from the metiers or cabinets on their way to the cap spinning mechanism may pass in contact with rollers, rods, pads or other surfaces supplied or impregnated with the size or dressing, or (with less advantage) through a bath of the same, or the size or dressing maybe sprayed on to the travelling threadsf'or any other suitable means may be adopted. 7
Any known or suitable sizes or adhesive dressings maybe employed, for instance-sollO lutions or emulsions of or containing gelatine (with or without olive or other oil), albumen, starch, dextrin," gums orresins in oil or other solvents,-or other adhesives, but preferably substances which are soluble in water or in a volatile solvent such for example as benzine. I
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Process for the manufactureor treatment of threads .or yarns consisting of or comprising filaments of cellulose acetate or other cellulose esters, ethers or derivatives by the 'dry or tevaporative method of formation,
characterized in that an adhesive sizing or dressing is applied. to the threads or yarns preparation being applied to the travelling 20 threads or yarns of associatedfilaments;
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
