A. H. HOFER 'DETACHABLE TARGET BUTT PLATE Filed Sent. 21 1923 INVENTOR AlfredHHo/r' Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
METRE S T ALFRED H. HOIFER, O'F DAYTON, OHIO.
BETACHABLE TARGET BUTT PLATE.
Application filed September 21, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED H. Horne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Target Butt Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a detachable target butt plate for rifles designed to be quickly attachable and detachable from the ordinary butt plate on the stock of regulation Springfield rifles, particularly.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which, for its connection, requires a minimum amount of alteration of the ordinary rifies butt plate, and which, when in position, constitutes a rigid continuous section of the gun stock.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side view of the butt end of the rifle, showing the target butt plate in position thereon;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is an isolated enlarged side view of a hook screw forming a part of the detachable connection for the plate.
In the drawings, the same numerals are applied to the same parts.
The gun stock 10 is fitted in practice with a metal butt plate 11, fastened suitably by screws 12 and 13, one entering the rear end of the stock and the other the top side thereof. This plate in order to permit the connection of the target butt plate 14 thereon, has an opening 15 provided therein near its lower edge forming a socket to receive a hook screw 16 projecting from the plate 14 with the end of the hook directed downwardly. The hook and socket connection is intended to be quickly detachable, and to hold the plate rigid on the end of the gun stock flush at all points with the edges of the plate 11 when the screw 17 is tightened. The screw 17 is entered through an opening in a shoulder prong 18 projecting rearwardly from the plate 14, substantially horizontally. A similar lower prong 19 is similarly rearwardly directed and is provided on the plate 14 to cooperate with the prong 18 in holding the stock steady upon the shoulder when firing the rifle. The screw 17 is re ceived in a nut 20 brazed, welded, or otherwise suitably secured on the inner side of Serial No. 664,129.
the plate '11 or simply laid in a socket in the gun stock and held in place by the plate in its assembled position. The screw 17 is intended to be manually operable by a knurled knob 21 in which the outer end of the screw is suitably threaded and riveted, as shown. The knob 21 when the plate 14 is in assembled position on the gun stock is turned up against the flat end 22 of the prong 18 flush therewith to present substantially the same appearance as the knob 23 on the outer end of the prong 19.
The target butt plate is manifestly of a size to be carried about in the pocket to be quickly attachable and detachable by hand as no tools are required in either operation, the screw tightened by hand having been found to be sufiicient to secure the target butt plate quite rigidly to the butt plate on the rifle, making it as solid as if attached directly to the stock. In fact, the plate can be drawn up so tightly as to compensate for any wear on the butt plate. The target butt plate equips the rifle for all styles of shooting and saves the user the expense of either extra rifles or extra stocks.
I claim:
1. The combination with an ordinary butt plate permanently affixed to the stock of a firearm, of a quickly detachable butt plate having two shoulder-engaging prongs at the upper and lower ends of the plate, means on the plate adjacent the one prong to make a quick detachable connection with the butt plate on the firearm, and a screw passing through the other prong for rigidly connecting the plate with the butt plate on the firearm.
2. The combination with a butt of a fire-- arm, of a quickly detachable butt piece having a shoulder prong extending rearwardly therefrom, a screw extending through said prong for securing said butt piece, and a finger knob rigid with the outer'end of said screw for turning the same forming the end of said prong with said butt piece in place.
3. The combination with the flat butt plate permanently aflixed on the stock of a rifle, of a one-piece pocket-type quickly detachable target butt plate having two spaced prongs to fit about the shoulder, a projection on the plate at one prong to make quickly detachable connection by engagement in an opening made in said butt plate, and a screw at the other prong entered through said plate to engage in a screw target butt plate and the ordinary butt plate upon movement of the one plate relative to the other, a screw entered through 1 the first named of said prongs to make a rigid connection for said target plate, and a rounded knob similar to the knob end of the second-named prong rigid with said screw for turning the same home forming 20 the knob end of the first-named prong with said target butt plate in place.
In testimony whereof I affia; my signature.
ALFRED H. I-IOFER.
