DISPENSING DEVICE.
Application filed December 19, 192-3.
To all who-m it may concern.
Be it known that I, SIGMOND Sorrnninnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in dispensing devices, having for an object to provide a device particularly advantageous for use in cafes, lunch rooms, restaurants, and similar establishments, for dispensing sugar or like commodities in predetermined amounts to the patrons thereof, thus effecting the economical as well as sanitary usage of such commodities.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a dispensing device of the character mentioned which can be conveniently and quickly operated whereby to effect the auto matic discharge of a predetermined quantity of sugar or the like therefrom and subsequently to a dispensing operation, will be immediately returned to its normal position for receiving an additional supply from the supply container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing device of the character mentioned having agitating means for preventing congealing of the sugar or the like in the container, said agitating means adapted to be operated automatically by the automatic: discharge of a predetermined quantity of sugar or the like from the container.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing device of the character mentioned having the parts so arranged that the same can be easily and quickly separated from one another to per- Init cleaning.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a hollow standard or supporting pillar, having a fiat circular base 2. the upper portion of the hollow standard is provided with a flat surface 3, upon which is adapted to rest a bowl-like base A having a head 5 formed on its upper end. A sugar container is designated by the numeral 6 and is provided on its lower end with an outwardly and downwardly directed flange 7, which is adapted to snugly receive the head 5 of the bowl-like member 4:. It is to be understood that the container 6 is formed of any suitable material. However, it has been found that glass or some other transparent mate rial is desirable, as it is then readily apparcut to the proprietor or employees of the cafe, restaurant or other place in which the container is installed, when it is necessary to refill same.
A cover 8 corresponding in shape to the cross sectional shape of the receiver 6 is provided and adapted to be engaged over the open upper end of the same. An opening 9 is formed in the cover to permit the refilling of the container 6 and the opening is adapted to be closed by a pivoted lid 10.
In order that the base 4; of the container 6 and its cover 8 may be retained in assembled relation, a connecting rod 11 is provided and has its opposite extremities screwthreaded, as indicated at 12, one end passing through an opening in the hollow tubular standard and the opposite end passing through an opening in the cover 8. A l0cking device in the form of a lock nut 13 is mounted on each of the screw-threaded ends of the connecting rod 11 and thus serves as a means for clamping various parts of said dispensing device in assembled position.
A pair of downwardly extenoing apertured extensions 1A. are formed upon the under side of the container 6 and serve as discharge ways whereby the discharge of sugar or the like may be effected.
With a view towards providing means for discharging the contents of the storage container 6 in predetermined amounts, I employ a measuring cup 15 in connection with each of the apertured extensions 14:, the cups 15 being pivotally mounted, as at 15, directly beneath the apertured extensions 14:. Each of the cups has a finger or thumb grip 16 engaging its opposite sides, and each of the fingers rest in arcuated slots 17 formed in the bowl-like base 1.
A partition 17 is formed in each of the cups and the space between the partition and the bottom of cup provides a recess in which a weight 18 is positioned, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows.
A lip or guard 19 is formed on each of the cups and when the cups are in the position for receiving sugar from the container 6 through the extensions 14, the lip or guard assists in limiting the amount of sugar discharged therein, and when one of the cups is moved to a discharging position, as shown in Fig. 3, the lip; or guard 19 closes the opening of the apertured. extension, thus preventing a waste through said discharge of the sugar. Spouts 20 are formed in the bottom of the bowl-like member 1 and receive the discharge of the sugar from the cups 15.
A casing 21 surrounds the connecting rod 11 and is supported in position on a bearing 21 carried by the upper flat surface 3 of the standard. A disk 22 is positioned between the lower end of the casing and the bearing 21, and a second disk 23 is supported on a shoulder 24 of the casing 21. The space in the lower end of the casing between the disks 22 and 23 is provided with a ratchet surface around the periphery of same and is adapted to impart rotation to the casing 21 by pawls 24, which are, in turn, carried by the disks 22 and 23. A lever 25 connects each of the disks 22 and 23 with one of the cups 15; thus it can be readily seen that when pressure is exerted on the finger pieces 16, one of the pawls will engage the ratchet surface and rotate the. casing 21.
A stirring device 26 is positioned in the container f5 and supported by the upper end of the casing 21. Thus, it will be readily apparent that whenever the casing is rotated the stirring device will be brought into action. As soon as one of the cups 15 has been moved to a discharging position and emptied of its contents, the weight with-- in the bottom of the cup will force same to return to its normal position.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown an electric light positioned on top of the container. However, it is to be understood that any design of lamp or any suitable means for ornamenting said container may be used.
In Fig. 4: I have shown a receptacle placed ed upon the bottom of same, a base having discharge spouts in alignment with the apertured extensions, measuring cups pivoted beneath each of the apertured extensions, means formed on said cups extending through said base for discharging the contents of said cup through said discharging spout, and means for automatically returning the cup to an operative position.

A dispensing container comprising a reservoir having apertured extensions formed upon the bottom of same, a base having discharge spouts in alignment with the apertured extensions, measuring cups pivoted beneath each of the apertured extensions, means formed on said cups extending through said base for facilitating the dis charging of their contents through said discharging spout, and a weight carried by each of the cups for returning the same to their normal positions.

A dispensing container comprising a reservoir having apertured extensions formed upon the bottom of same, a base having discharged spouts in alignment with the apertured extensions, measuring cups pivoted beneath each of the apertured extensions, means formed on saidcups extending through said base for discharging the contents of said cups through said discharging spouts, and means carried by the cups for closing the open end of the apertured extension when the cups are in their discharging positions. A. dispensing container comprising a bowl-like base having discharge spouts formed in the bottom portion of the same, a reservoir having apertured extensions formed upon its bottom communicable with said. discharge spouts, measuring cups housed Within said bowl-like base and pivotally mounted upon each of the apertured extensions adapted to receive predetermined quantities of matter from the reservoir for discharge into said discharge spouts, each of said measuring cups having their respective bottoms Weighted, lips formed upon the upper portions of the several measuring cups adapted With movement of such cups to their discharging positions With respect to said apertured extensions to close said apertured extensions means extending from said cups through portions of the bowl-like base for facilitating pivotal movement of the same, a tubular casing having its basal portion rotatably mounted upon a portion of said bowllike base and extending upwardly into said reservoir, a rotatable agitator carried by said tubular casing and arranged in the reservoir, and means for connecting each of said measuring cups to said tubular casing, Whereby to impart rotary motion to the latter With pivotal movement of the former.
