Description

Aug. 19, 1924. 1,505,232
N. W. TRAUTNER WHEEL FULLER Filed Aug. 2 19 Patented Aug. 19, 1924.
NITED STATES NICHOLAS w. TRAU'TN'ER, F sat PAUL MINNESOTA:
WHEEL FULLER.
Applicationfiled August 2, 1923. Serial No. 655,334.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS W. TRAUT- NEH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful iVheel Puller, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to gear or wheel pullers, the primary object of the invention being to provide novel means to insure against stripping the threads of the gear or wheel under operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a puller of this type that will firmly grip the gear or wheel being removed, the
gripping action being increased as pressure is brought to bear on the adjusting bolt, forming a part of the device.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a wheel pulling device constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same as positioned for pulling.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a portion of the hub of the wheel being removed, the axle on which the wheel is supported being indicated at 6.
The reference character 7 designates the body portion of the device which is formed with an internally threaded extension 8 that accommodates the pressure bolt 9 designed to contact with the free end of the axle supporting the wheel under operation, in a manner as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, so that pressure brought tobea-r on the axle 6 will act to draw the wheel from its supporting axle.
As shown, the body portion is formed with a reduced threaded extension 10 at its inner end, which threaded extension receives the-pulling ring 11 that is formed with an inclined inner wall-12 engaging the inclined walls 13 of the sectional gripping ring 14. From the foregoing it will be obvious that as pressure is exerted on the axle 6, the pulling ring 11 will move over the sections of the ring 14, setting up a wedging action to force the sections into close engagement with the threads of the wheel hub.
It might be further stated that the inner walls of the sections of the ring 14 are threaded to cooperate with the threads 15 if {She hub to secure the device on the wheel Formed in the pulling ring 11 is a threaded openin 16 that accommodates the threaded bolt 17 that has its inner end disposed between the adjacent ends of two of the sections whereupon rotary movement of the device to position the same on a wheel, will result in a relative movement of the sections of; the ring 14 to cause the device to be fed onto the threads of the wheel hub.
A. head 18 is formed on the pressure bolt 9 and provides means whereby a wrench or similar tool may be positioned to operate the bolt 9.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a body portion having an extension formed with a threaded opening, said body portion having'a threaded extension at its opposite end, a removable pulling ring positioned on the threaded extension of the body portion,
said ring having an inclined inner wall, a secs tional gripping ring having inclined outer surfaces engaging the inclined inner wall of the pulling ring, means for connecting the pulling ringto the sectional ring to cause the sectional ring to rotate with the pullin ring, and pressure bolt extending through the threaded opening of the body portion.
2. In a device of the character described, a body portion having an extension formed with a threaded opening, a removable pulling ring mounted on the body portion and having an inclined inner wall, a sectional ring position-ed within the pulling ring and having inclined outer surfaces cooperating with the inclined wall of the pulling ring, to cause the sections of the sectional ring to move inwardly when pressure is brought to bear on the body portion, and a pressure bolt operating through the body portion.
3. In a device of the character'described,
a body portion, a removable pulling ring on the body portion, a sectional ring positioned in the pulling ring a bolt extending through the pulling ring andrhsposecl between. sections of the sectional ring to c ause the sec tional ring to rotate With the pulling ring,
means for causing the sectional ring to move In testimony that I claim the foregoing Yes my own, 1 have hereto afiixed my signature 10 in the presence of two WltIlGSSQS NICHOLAS W. TBAUTNER.
