To all whom t 'may concern Be it known that Louis V. MnLLoRY and Roan F. BEST, citizens of the United States ot America,residing at Kansas City. in the, county ol" Jackson and State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and useful im provements in Removable Crown-Brass- Locking Devices, ot which'the tollowing is a specification. r
'Uur invention relates to journal boxes and bearings and the primary object thereof is to provide a locking means for holding a removable crown brass in functional position. ln actual practice it is quite diicult to provide an efficient means for removably securing the crown brasses in place so they can be detached `from the journal boxin an ex. peditious manner as well as being held rigid when they are functioning.
Our invention contemplates the provision of means tor providing a novel inexpensive easily applied locking means tor the crown brass and to this end the invention consists in certain novel parts and combination of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is an end view ot a journal box, the axle and lparte voit the locking `mechanism being shown in section.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of referencef 1 designates the ournal box provided with a crown brass 2 having end flanges 8 and l which overlap the shoulders 5 and biot-the journal boX so that the crown brass is held against longitudinal movement. The crown brass, as is usual consists ot' a concave-convex member substantially semi-circular in cross section and one longitudinal-edge7 rests upon a shoulder 8 in the journal box. The opposite edge'of the crown brass is supported by a toggle lever mechanism. The toggle lever mechanism is shown as consisting of two elongated plates 9 and 10;(best shown in Figs. 3 and 4:). Each sleeve or head is substantially like that shown in Fig. 5 and each is `provided with a notch'19 to receive a pin 2O adapted to 'also engage either of the ynotches 21for 22 yin the plate 9 so that the removable heads or sleeve nuts 17 and18 will be held against` rotation.
f rlhe heads or sleeve nuts are internally threaded and are engaged by'threaded ends on draw bolts and24. On the outer ends of the draw bolts which project through the bosses 25 on thejournal box are vnuts 26 held against turning by jam nuts 27 as will be well understood.
The parts are carefully machined. The crown brass is first put in place in the usual. way so that its flanges and 4 will overlap the shoulders 5 and 6. Then the plates are put in place with the lower edge .11 of the lower plate 10 resting in the recess 12 and the lower edge of the upper plate resting upon the upper edge of the lower plate with the meeting edges of the two plates bowed out'slightly from the vertical wall of the journal boX. A wrench is thenapplied to the nuts 26 to draw the draw bolts and thereby snap the toggle plates to aligning posisiderabley tension to draw the toggle plates as shown in Fig. 1 they will hold the crown `tions shown in Fig. 1.y It will require con los s brass rigid.' Alfter the draw bolts are caused ,n to pull the toggle plates in the position' shown in Fig.1,`the lock nut is applied. The wholestructure isv thenrrigid. lVhen it is desired to,k .remove the crown brass, a wrench may be applied to the polygonal end 28 of eachy draw bolt 28 or 24 to unscrew the draw bolt from the removablehead, then the head may be released from the recess which it engages and the two toggle plates may be i plied outwardly by inserting a tool between them and their meeting edges and the side of the journal box. Aslight outward pressure will snap the plates loose so that the crown brass may be removed.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that thecrown brass may be readily applied and disassembled from the journal box and that the crown brass will be securely held inl lace by the toggle levers or plates.
`hat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. .In combination a journal box having ashoulder, a crown brass having one edge resting on the Shoulder, a seat in the journal box, a pairot toggle levers, one ot which rests inthe seat and the other of which is adapted to engage an edge vof theV crown brass and means for operating the toggle levers to hold the crown brass rigidly with respect to the journal box.
2. .In combination a journal box having a shoulder, a crown brass having one edge resting on thefshouldeigza seat in the ournal box, a pair of toggle levers, one of whichy rests inthe seat and the other of which is adapted to engage an edgey of the crown brass rigidly with respect to the journal box., said means comprising draw bolts passing through the journal box and having heads engaging the levers.
3. In combination ay journal box having a shoulder, a crownbrass having one edge resting on the shoulder, a seat in the jour f Y nal box7 a pair of toggle levers, one of which rests in the seat and the other of which is adapted to engage an edge of the crown brass rigidly with respect to the journal box, said means comprising draw bolts passing through the ournal box and having remov-y able heads engaging the levers.
4. In combination a journal box, a crown brass in the top of the journal box having end iianges overlappingshoulders on the journal box to prevent longitudinal movement of the crown brass, a shoulder portion on the journal box constituting a rest Jfor one edge of the crown brass, the opposite edge ot' the crown brass being unsupported and toggle levers engaging the journal box and adapted to yengage the unsupported edge of the crown brass to hold it rigidly withrespect to the journal box.
