'Be it known that I, ERNST H. WAHLERL a citizen of the United States of America, resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Grinding and Polishing Rolls, of whic'h the following is a full, clear, .and exact description, reference `being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication. A
This invention relates to improvements in devices for grinding andpolis'hing rolls, and particularly to a device for grinding and polishing rolls such as are used, in rolling mills for rolling sheets and plates.
As is 4well known, Ithe rolls employed in rolling mills must be maintained at a high temperature in order to insure a perfect rolling surface. Also, 'such rolls 'are subjected to severe usage which results in roughening the. surface of the `rolls and causes pitting. This necessitates a 'cessation of operations in order to regrind or repolish the faces of the rolls. The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for grinding and polishing the rolls of sheet rolling mills and for maintaining the. surfaces thereof parallel and free from pits and adhering particles without having to shut down the mill with the consequent loss of time and the useless dissipation of heat of the rolls, thus enabling the rolls to be utilized at all times to their greatest rolling capacity.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement vof parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred emb0diment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In view of the foregoing, it is of the utmost importance that the grinding and polishing ofthe rolls to true the surfaces Ythereof before the final passage of the sheets between said rolls be done very rapidly, because if this is not so the rolls will be 'permitted to cool 'slightly whereby their shape fwill be changed and the'iinal passage 'of the metal between the rolls B and C will produce va sheet which is not of uniform thickness. The grinding 'and polishing device which will now be described is designed so that it maybe readily inserted between the rolls andthe grinding and polishing done'very rapidly, thus obviati'ng the objections recited above. l

The semicircular portion 23 of the member 22 is then caused to engage the section of tubing E as shown in Fig. II, after which the handle 14 is lowered, thereby causing the member 7 to move 7 upwardly, thus bringing the abrasive block, forming a part of the member 7, into contact with the roll C. When the device is in operation the curved face 16 formed on the pivoted lever 11 bears against the adjacent end of the member 7, thereby keeping the abrasive block in iirm contact with the roll. Each of the abrasive blocks 17 is self--adjustable as the threaded shank 2 may oscillate in the threaded opening 25 to coinpensate for any irregularities in the roll B.y while the extension 10 contacting with the curved seat 10 will permit the member 7 to rock slightly, there being sufficient looseness between slots 13 and the bolt 15 to permit said movement.
It is, of course, apparent that the grinding or polishing is started at one end of the roll and after spaces on the rotating rolls B and C the width of the blocks 17 are ground and polished, the device is moved laterally on the tube E at a distance equal to the width of the blocks, when the grinding operation is repeated. The step by step method is continued until the entire roll has been ground and polished.
Fig. V illustrates a modified form of my invention wherein the abrasive blocks are provided with supporting pins which are ar ranged in slots 30 whereby said blocks may move toward or away from the rolls B and C. A lever l11 pi'voted at 31 bears against portions of the pockets 3 and 8, whereby when the handle `1li is moved downwardly, said pockets and the abrasive blocks therein will be moved outwardly causingsaid abrasive blocks to bear lirmly against the rolls.
By referring to Fig. IV of the drawings it will be apparent that as the abrasive mem-A bers 17 are worn down by contact with the rolls B and C, the supporting members 1 and 7 may be adjusted toward the rolls to take up said wear by rotating the threaded shank 2 in the lug 24.

Adevice for grinding and polishing rolls, comprisingan abrasive member, a supporting member for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a second abrasive member, said second mentioned abrasive member being supported by said supporting member for said first mentioned abrasive member, and pivoted means whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprising an abrasive member, a supporting member for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a second abrasive member, said second mentioned iml .abrasive member being supported by said supporting member for said first ymentioned abrasive member, and pivoted means slidably connected to said 4.second abrasive member whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprisingan abrasive member, a supporting means for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a sec-ond abrasive member, means for holding said second abrasivemember, said lastl mentioned means being supported by the holding means for said first mentioned abrasive member, and pivoted means slidably connected to the last mentioned holding means whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contactwith a second roll. f

A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprising an abrasive member, a supporting means for holding said abrasive member in :contact with a roll, a second abrasive member, means `for vholding said Asecond abrasive member, said last mentioned means being supported by the holding means for said first mentioned abrasive member, pivoted means slidably connected to the last mentioned holding means whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll, and means on said pivoted means for retaining said second abrasive member in contact with said second roll.
5. A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprising an abrasive member, a supporting means for holding, said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a second abrasive member, means for holding said second abrasive member, pivoted means slidably connected to the last mentioned holding means whereby said second ab-rasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll, and means comprising a curved face contacting with the second holding means whereby said second abrasive member may be retained in contact with said second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing the rolls of mills having a transverse tube, comprising an abrasive member, means for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a member embracing said transverse tube for supporting said holding means, a second abrasive member, means for holding said second abrasive member, and pivoted means whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing therolls of mills having a transverse tube, comprising an abrasive member, means for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a member for supporting said holding means, said member comprisingl a seniicircular portion adapted to embraee said trans-verse tube, a second abrasive member, means for 'holding said second abrasive member, and pivoted `means whereby said second abrasive member Vmay be moved into contact -with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing the rolls of mills having a transverse tube, comprising an abrasive member, means for holding .said abrasive member in contact with a roll, said mea-ns being provided with a threaded shanlr, a member for supporting `Asaid holding means, said means 'having a semici'rcnlar portion adapted to embrace said .transverse tube and a lug rportion provided with a threaded opening into which said threaded shank extends, a second abrasive member, means for holding said second abrasive member, and pivoted means whereby said second abrasive member may 'be moved into contact with a second rollr i 9. A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprising an abrasive member, means for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, a. second abrasive member, means for holding said second abrasive member, the lirst mentioned holding means being provided with a curved seat, an end of said last mentioned holding means being supported in said seat and being roclrable therein, and pivoted means whereby said second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing rolls, comprising an abrasive member, a supporting member for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, said supporting member being provided with a pocket in which said abrasive member is located, a second abrasive member, a second supporting member, said second supporting member being provided with a pocket for the reception of said second abrasive member, means whereby said abrasive members are retained in place within said pockets, and means whereby the second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.

A device for grinding and polishing the rolls of mills having a transverse tube, comprising an abrasive member, means for holding said abrasive member in contact with a roll, said means being rovided with a threaded shank, a member or supporting said holding means, said means having a. semicircular portion adapted to embrace said transverse tube and a lug portion provided with a threaded opening into which said threaded shank extends, a second abrasive member, a second supporting member movable independently of said first supporting member, said supporting members being provided with pockets Within which said abrasive members are located, said abrasive members being provided with openings in their ends, means comprising L- shaped bolts a portion of each of which enters said openings whereby said abrasive members are retained in place within said pockets, and means whereby the second abrasive member may be moved into contact with a second roll.
