To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, WILLIAM. L. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Colters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates'to plows more particularly of the type employed in orchard work, and having supporting wheels from which power is transmitted, through efficient 1nechanism, to raise the plow. A rolling colter is provided for each plow body, and as one of the colters is liable to obstruct the movement of the parts, by operation of which the plow is raised, the object of my invention is to provide a means by which said colter can be raised or lowered simul taneously with the operation of raising or lowering the plow. 2

The frame comprises the plow beams 1 and 2, a brace 3 secured to the forward ends of the beams, and a brace 1 having its central portion bolted to the beam 1, and from its central portion extended angularly in opposite directions to the beam 2 to which it is securely bolted, the forward end 5 extending above the beam 2 for a purpose hereinafter stated. A plow body 6 is mounted on the beam 1 and a similar plow body 7 is mounted on the beam 2.
Rockably journaled in hearings on the beams 1 and 2 is anaXle 8 having an inturned crank end on which is mounted a landwheel 9, and an out-turned crank end on which is mounted a furrowwheel 10. The rear end of the plow is supported by a furrowwheel 11 journaled on the crank end of an axle 12 having a vertical spindle 18 which is rotatable in a sleeve 14:. A bracket 15 is pivotally mounted on a support 16, secured on the rearof the beam 2; the support 16 consisting of two plates 17 and 18 bolted respectively to opposite sides of the beam 2. One arm 19 of a horizontally disposed U-shaped link 20 is rockably mounted in hearings on the support 16, and the opposite arm 21 is rockably mounted in hearings on the lower end of the sleeve 14. A rearward extension 22 of the bracket 15 is pivotally connected to the upper part of the sleeve 1 1.
A lever 23 is pivotally mounted,intermediate its ends, on the upper part of the support 16, and on its lower end is a roller 24 which is in constant engagement with a notch in an upwardly extending part 25 of the bracket 15.
To raise the plow I employ a well known mechanism including a clutch one member 26 of which is permanently connected to the hub of the wheel 9, and a second member 27 which is loosely mounted on the axle 8, adjacent the member 26, and is tripped into engagement with the member 26 by actuation of a lever 28. To an extension 29, on the member 27, is pivotally connected a link 30 having its opposite end pivoted to a lever 31 mounted on an arm of a notched sector 32 ri idly secured on the beam 1. The lever 31 is provided with the usual type of latch to engage with any one of the notches in the sector 3s. clutch members are in engagement they rotate with the wheel 9, and as the lever 31 is locked to the beam 1 the plow will be raised from the ground through the connection of the link 30 with the lever 31, the plow rising in an upward forward movement and the axle 8 rocking downwardly and rearwardly, the rear of the plow rising simultaneously, the lever being connected by a rod 33 to an arm 34 which is "integral with a crank member 35 rigidly secured on the axle 8 and rockable therewith. An arm 36 is preferable integral with the member 35 and on its free end the lever 28 is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends. 11 do not limit myself to this particular type of power lift mech anism for any one of other types can be em ployed in connection with my invention.
Rockably mounted in the end 5 of the brace d and in a bearing 37 on the beam 1, forwardly of the axle, is a transverse shaft 38 on which is rigidly secured, by bolts or rivets, a casting 39 having a forwardly extending arm 10 and a rearward extension 11. In an opening in the rearward extension 11 is carried the colter standard 1-2 secured in place by bolts 13 which can be turned to permit the removal of the standard or its adjustment It is apparent that when the vertically. On the lower end of the standard 42 is a rearwardly extending yoke 44 having a split sleeve 45 for reception of the lower end portion of the standard which is clamped therein by a bolt operating to draw the parts of the sleeve together in a manner common in the art. A colter a is rotatably mounted between the arms of the yoke and on the ends thereof in a well known manner. Pivotally connected to the forward end of the arm 40 is a link 46 extending rearwardly to pivotal connection with the arm 36 intermediate the axle 8 and the end of the arm on which the lever 28 is pivotally supported. A colter b is similarly mounted on a standard held rigidly on the beam 2 and adjustable in a vertical and lateral direction, similar numerals being used to indicate similar parts used with the colter a.
From the construct-ion shown in the drawings it is evident that if the colter a was mounted on the beam 1 in a similar manner to the colter b, that is, rigidly with the beam 1, the colter a would interfere with some of the parts of the power lift mechanism when the latter is operated and the axle 8 is rocked in raising the plow, with my device, however, this fault is overcome, for as the axle 8 is rocked the crank member secured thereon rocks with it, the arm 36 swings downwardly, and as the latter is connected to the arm by the link 46, the casting 39 and the shaft 38 are also rocked downwardly and rearwardly agreeable with the movement of the axle 8, and the colter a is swung rearwardly out of the path of movement of any of the parts of the lifting mechanism, and when the plow is lowered it follows that the colter a will be swung in the opposite direction to an operative position as shown in Figure 3. It will be noted that the colter a is at all times positioned rearwardly of the axis of the wheels 9 and 10.
The plow shown is to be tractor drawn and is provided with a draw-bar 47, suitably connected to the frame, to which means connecting the plow to a tractor are attachable. I do not limit myself to the precise construction of the plow shown for it may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a wheeled plow including a frame and a landwheel and a furrowwheel movable downwardly and rearwardly relative to the plow frame to raise the plow by the traction power of one of said wheels, the
combination therewith of a rolling colter pivotally supported on the frame and adapted to be swung rearwardly and upwardly simultaneously with the downward and rearward movement of the wheels.
2. In a wheeled plow including a frame and a landwheel and furrowwheel and having mechanism operative by the traction power of one of said wheels to swing said wheels downwardly and rearwardly relative to the frame to raise the plow, the combination therewith of a rolling colter pivotally supported on the frame and connected with said mechanism whereby the colter is swung upwardly and rearwardly simultaneously with the downward and rearward movement of said wheels.
3. In a wheeled plow including a frame and a landwheel and furrowwheel and having mechanism connecting one of said wheels with the frame and operative by traction power to swing said wheels downwardly and rearwardly relative to the frame to raise the plow, the combination therewith of a rolling colter pivotally supported on the frame and actuated by the operation of said mechanism to swing upwardly and rearwardly simultaneously with the downward and rearward movement of the wheels.
4. In a wheeled plow including a frame and a landwheel and furrowwheel and having mechanism operative by traction power of one of said wheels to swing said wheels downwardly and rearwardly relative to the frame to raise the plow, the combination therewith of a rockable support mounted on the frame, a rolling colter carried by the support, and a connection from the support to said mechanism whereby said support is rocked to swing the colter upwardly and rearwardly simultaneous with the downward and rearward movement of the wheels.
5. In a wheeled plow including a frame and a landwheel and furrowwheel and having mechanism connecting one of said wheels with the frame and operative by traction power to swing said wheels downwardly and rearwardly relative to the fran'le to raise the plow, the combination therewith of a shaft rockably mounted on the frame, a rolling colter, a support for the colter secured on the shaft and rockable therewith and connected with said mechanism to be rocked thereby and swing the colter upwardly and rearwardly simultaneous with the operation of raising the plowJ WILLIAM L.
