A. BoNoM PROPELLING MECHANISM FOR BOATS Filed Sent. 19. 1921 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Aug. 5, 1924.
unirse a sra'rss ALFRED BONOM, OF PATERSON, NEW' JERSEY.
PROPELLING MECHANISM FOR Application fi1ed September' 19, 1921.
Be it known that ALFRED BoNoM, a subject ot' the King of italy, residing` at Paterson, in the State of New Jersey, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful improvements in propelling Mechanism for Boats; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in propelling mechanism for boats [and the like, the primary object being the provision of means for controlling the speed of rotation of the propeller in accordance with the waves before the propeller gains speed by it-s movement out of the water.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby when the propeller is submerged in the water, full powerwill be applied thereto, and also a means which is of such nature that when the propeller emerges from the water, the power applied thereto will be decreased.
Another object of the invent-ion is the provision of a propeller control with electrical means for locking the same and preventingits operation unless desired.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of manual means for locking the mechanism in inoperative position.
A further object of the invention is: the provision of means actuated by a suitable lfloat mounted adjacent the propeller of a. body for cutting down the motive power to the propeller when the latter' emerges from the water due to receding waves or from other similar causes.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a mechanism such as above referred to, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and etlicient in use and readily operated.
lilith the above and other obj ects in view` the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings .forming a part of the present application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat con- BOATS.
Serial No. 501,858.
struc-ted in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view through the stern portion thereof showing the mechanism locked in inoperative position by the manual means and the level of the. water above the float;
.Figure 3 is a similar view showing the mechanism unlocked with the level of the float below the water and the float started on its downward movement;
Figure 11 is a view similar to Figure. 3 showing the mechanism unlocked and the float;
Figure 5 is an end view of the float;
Figure 6 is a plan view thereof with the supporting parts in section;
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view taken through the float; and,
Figure S is a view showing an electrical connection for locking and releasing the ioat actuated mechanism.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates in general a vessel which may be of any preferred form being driven preferably by the steam motor 11 which receives its steam from the condenser 12 through the supply pipe 13, the said steam being controlled in its passage through-the pipe 13 by a suitable valve 11i. rlhis valve 14 is connected by a link 15 to one arm of a bell crank lever 16 journaled upon a shaft 17 mounted in suitable bearings 18. The opposite end of the bell crank lever 1G is connected by a link 19 to ayoke 20 which is pivotally connected to the central shaft 21 of a ball float 22 which is pivotally mounted for vertical movement in a second yoke 23 which is journaled at 24 to the stern of the boat.
The propeller is shown at 25 and is of ordinary construction. As shown in Figure 8 in the modified form, a gear 26 is keyed to the shaft 17 and engages a pawl 27 which locks the shaft 17 against movement and holds the parts in inoperative position through the tension of a spring 2S. An electro-magnet is shown at 29 and serves when energised to lift the pawl from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 2G and permit the operation of the several parts.
i battery is shown at 30 and is connected by the conductors 31 and 32 to the opposite contact points of the electro-magnet 29, The current from the battery to the electromagnet is controlled by a suitable switch 33 mounted within the pilot house or at any convenient location.
Normally the mechanism is held in inoperative position so that the propeller 25 at all times receives its proper amount of power, but in case of any unusually rough water it sometimes becomes necessary to apply the maximum power to the propeller only when the latter is wholly submerged in' the water, and when this is the case the switch 33 is closed by the pilot which energises the electro-magnet 29, releasing the pawl 27 from its engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 26 and permitting the iioat to rise and lower by the action of the waves, thus cutting off or increasing the power through the instrumentality of the rod l5 and controlling valve 14.
In the preferred form the electric connections are dispensed with and the bell crank lever I6 extended as at for engagement with a pawl 3G which when in the position shown in Figure 2, locks the parts in inoperative position. Then in the position shown in I "igure 3 the mechanism including the float is released and permitted to fall to the position shown at Figure l. Any means may be provided for actuating the pawl 36.
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a controlling mechanism for governing power transmitted to the propellers of vessels and the like is' provided, which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device and it should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specic details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing` from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The herein described apparatus eomprising a propeller, a motor for actuatingl the propeller, a valve controlling the motor and consequently the propeller, a lloat mounted adjacent the propeller, a yoke supporting the l'loat and adapted for connection to a propelled body, a second yoke connected to the iioat, and an operative connection between said second yoke and the valve.
2. The herein described apparatus comprising a propeller, a motor for actuating the propeller, a valve controlling the motor and consequently controlling the propeller, a float mounted adjacent the propeller, a yoke supporting the float and adapted for connection to a propelled body, a second yoke connected to the float, a rotating shaft, a lever keyed to the shaft, a link connecting the lever with the second yoke, a pawl engaging the lever and holding it in raised position, a link connecting the lever with the valve of the motor, and means for controlling the pawl, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The herein described apparatus comprising a propeller, a motor for actuating the propeller, a valve controlling the motor and consequently controlling the propeller, a float mounted adjacent the propeller, a yoke supporting the float and adapted for connection to a propeller body, a ond yoke connected to the float, a rotating shaft, a lever keyed to the shaft, a link connecting the lever with the second yoke, a pawl engaging the lever and holding it in raised position, a link connecting the lever with the valve of the motor, and an electro-magnetic device for controlling thc pawl.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ALFRED BONOM.
