Be it known that I, NATHAN RITTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has relation to an improvement in clips and contemplates a clip for associating with a sheet, card or other article, certain indicia carried by the clip.

One of the principal objects ofthe present invention is toprovide a clip which in addition to performing the usual function of associating sheets or other articles with one another, is so constructed as to allow for its association with said articles or objects certain indicia or indicia bearing means, whereby a maximum number of displays on said indicia may be obtained.

In the general forms of clips as now constructed, the same define only one pair of clamping jaws or portions for engagement with the article or articles with which it is to be associated, thus limiting the application of the clip to said article or articles by sliding the same longitudinally thereover in one direction.

It is therefore a further object of the present invention to so improve the construction of the ordinary forms of paper clips to dene a pair of clamping portions each having an entrance mouth disposed toward its opposite ends whereby the clip may be engaged by sliding the same longitudinally onto the article or articles with which it is associated from either end of the clip.

As a still further object the invention aims to produce a clip having covering means associated therewith which in addition to rendering the same more facile in its use, may also serve as a protection for indicia bearing means enclosed by said covering.

Theinvention furthermore aims to provide a clip of the character described which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and produce, and

which is highly eiiicient` inv its purpose.

With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and il ustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the clip constituting the preferred embodiment of the invention and illustrated in Figs. 1to 4 inclusive is constructed of a single length of wire bent medially upon itself to provide a transverse end 10, parallel side legs 11, and aligned ends 12 which project inwardly toward each other from the free. ends `of the side legs 11. A pair of spaced parallel intermediate legs lextend toward the end 10 and are bent laterally as at 14 to intersect approximately the center of the length of the clip. The free ends of the laterally extending portions 14 are bent reversely as at- 15 toward the ends 12 and lie within and engage the inner periphery of the sidelegs 11. the terminals 16 thereof being bent aro-und the side legs 11 to dispose the same in a plane with the clip. Under this arrangement the laterally bent portions 14 of the intermediate legs 13 and the ret-urn bent portions 15 define together with that portion of the side legs which lie between the extremities 16 andthe end l10 a pair of clamping jaws or portions for engagement over a. card, sheet or other thin fiat. article or articles, the entrance of which jaw is disposed toward the end 10. The terminals 16 constitute a stop against which the inner edge of the sheet, card or other article enga-ges to limit the application of the clip thereon. The terminal 16 and return bent portions 15 deine together with that portion of the side legs which lies between the laterally bent portions 14 and the ends 12 a pair of clamping jawshaving an entrance mouth disposed towardsthe ends A12 and in this instance the laterally bent portions 14 constitutefarstop against which the edge of the card. sheet or other article. engages to limitl the application of the clip thereto. Under this ar'- rangeinent it will be evident that a clip is provided which is insertable over and engageable with a card, Vsheet or other` article by longitudinal sliding of the same thereover from either end of the clip whilea stop is formed to limit the sliding of the nclip onto said article whereby a portion of the clip will normally project beyond the outer .edge thereof. .ltr'therefore follows that the clip -witl'i' suitable indiciaV bearing meanscarried thereon may Vbe associated with rthe article in a maximum number of ways for displaying the various indicia. To this end, a suitable covering consisting of a sheet or strip `of .material 17 is hooked under the laterally `bent portions 14 at one end, extends longitudinally of the clip and around the ends 12 to lie at one side of the Vclip and is thence extended along the opposite side around the end 10 with .the ,other vnAterminal lying between the terminal hooked aroundthe laterally extending portions 14 f and they lead 17,8 of the strip which lies paral- .lel with the oppositey face ofthe clip. The 'sheet or strip 417 may. thus have inscribed .directly thereon suitable indicia 197 20, 21 and 22, which indicia may be selectively displayed by the various positioning of the clip on the article, namely, by slipping the clip from either end onto the artic-le and by yreversingthe.sides of the clip to face the observer. In lieu of directly inscribing the indicia on the sheet or strip 17, individual iudicial bearing elements or cards 23 ma7 be Vvpo-sitioned within the strip or sheet `17 which in this instance will be of transparent material such as celluloid.

In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the clip which vis constructed'of :a single length of wire is bent fmedially upon itself to provide an end 25,

As a new articleof "manufacturefa clip constructed of a length of material'bent upon itself to define a pair of clamping-portions at opposite endseach having anentrance mouth disposed toward the opposite ends of said clip, a common stop at the inner endsof each pair of clamping-portions, anda cover for said clip extending around the length thereof. e

As a new article of manufacture, a clip constructed of a length of material bent upon itself to .define a pair of clamping portions at opposite ends each having an entrance mouth disposed toward the opposite ends of said clip, and indicia bearing means carried by said clip disposed on opposite sides and at opposite ends of theclip..
