' F. J. KALTEYER HOLDER FOR RAZOR BLADES FOR SHA'RPENING DEVICES Filed June 24 1920' I N VEN TOR f ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 5, 11324r a i T FREDERICK J. KALTEYEE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASKEGNOR TO ELECTOSTBOP MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA.
Application filed June, 24, 19,20. Serial No. 391,482.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. KAL: TEYER, a citizen of the United Statea'resid ing in Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Razor Blades for Sharpening Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use, the same, refer'encebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of; this specification.
My invention relates to holders for blades for: razor sharpening devices. It has for its object to provide a construction of; blade holder embodying novel features for the vertical adjustment of one of the jaws for tl 1e-- purpose of placing the bladein proper position for honing or stropping; also for preventing accidental displacement of the blade from its honing or stropping position; also in the means for gripping the blade in position between the jaws of; the holder; also in the construction of the clamping jaws.
and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in features hereinafter described and thensought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying. drawing forming a part hereof, andinwhich Figure 1 is a front View of a portion of a sharpening device illustrated in a general way and having the blade-holder supported therefrom;
Figure 2 is a perspective of the bladeholder;
Figure 3 a vertical section through the holder with a razor blade gripped by its jaws;
Figure 4c is a similar view showing a different adjustment of one of the jaws;
Figure 5, a sectional, view, on an enlarged scale, illustrating a three point contact of the aws with a razor blade.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates part of a sharpening device having an overhanging arm 2 from which the blade holder To the accomplishment of the foregoing may be, suitably supported to sustain the blade between honing or stropping rolls 3.
The blade-holder comprisesa jaw 4t having inwardly projecting lips 5 to contact with or grip one side of a blade to be sharpened and above which extend spring metal or resilient arms or prongs 6 which willbe clamped to the overhanging arm 2 and hold the blade under tension against the honing or stropping: roll which bears against one side or the other of the blade. The metal of the blank from which the holder is formed is slitted or out between the prongs 6 and bent outwardly to form a'loop, spring 7 and the portion beneath the spring and which forms the second jaw 8 of the holder is bent inwardly at its side edges to form inwardly extending lips 9 one of which is connected to the other by a cross pin 10 to which is connected, preferably pivotally, a threaded bolt 11 which passes through the companion jaw 4' and isprovided with a thumb nut 12 which bears against a. thiinblc or sleeve 13 which at its opposite end bears against the jaw so that when the thumb nut is; screwed up the jaws are brought towards each other so as to clamp the blade inserted between the two jaws. The upper end of jaw 8 is formed with an inwardly extending lip. 14:, which may be made by slitting the middle portion of the loop spring and bending it inwardly illustrated, and the lower end of the jaw is also formed with an inwardly extending lip 15. Both of the lips 1 1 and 15 are apertured for the passage of an adjusting stem or bolt 16, the upper portion of which is threaded for engagement with threads in an aperture of the loop 7. This stem or bolt 16 constitutes, practically, a component part of the jaw 8 and therewith acts in conjunction with the companion jaw to clamp a blade between the two jaws. The lower end of the stem or bolt 16 is formed with a groove 17 and the inwardly extending lips 5 of jaw 4+ are formed each with a groove 18, which grooves are designed to receive the opposite edges of the back of an old style razor blade 19 and aii ord a better vgrip of the jaws on a blade of that type. The lips 5 bearing against one side of the razor blade and the stem or bolt 16 bearing against the other and at a. point intermediate of the bearing points of the lips 5 a three point gripping contact of the jaws with the blade is atforded and this tends to create or effect a better gripping action onthe blade and guard against accidental slipping of the blade in the operation of honing or stropping. The purpose of providing for a vertical adjustment of the stem or bolt 16, or practically of one of the clamping jaws is this. It frequently happens that "the'back of an old style razor blade will project more from one side than the other or that the two sides are not exactly alike. When such is the case and the clamping action of the jaws justment, up or down as necessary, of one of the clamping jaws so as to tilt the blade sufiiciently to bring it to a vertical position as illustrated in Figure l of the drawing. In the present embodiment of the invention this is effected by screwing the stem or bolt 16 up or down as may be necessary for the proper adjustment. To provide against accidental change in adjustment of the stem or bolt 16 incidental to operation of the sharpening machine, the stem or bolt is serrated or knurled as indicated at 19 and a portion of the jaw 8 is slitted and pressed inward to form a lip 20 which will press against the knurled portion of the stem or bolt and serve as a lock against accidental turning of the stem 0r bolt.
I have described with particularity the preferred details of the various parts but changes can be made therein and essential features of the invention be retained,
Having described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim is: V
1. A blade holder for sharpening devices comprising oppositely disposed jaws, one of the jaws having bearing contacts for one side of a blade, and a stem associated with one jaw to constitute a bearing contact for the other side of the blade and adjustable lengthwise of the jaw for adjustment of a blade. v 4 j 2. A blade holder for sharpening devices comprising oppositely disposed jaws, one of the jaws having grooved bearing contacts for one side of a blade, and a stem associated with one jaw and having at its end a grooved bearing Contact for the other side of the blade and adjustable lengthwise of the jaw for adjustment of a blade.
3. A blade holder for sharpening devices comprising oppositely disposed jaws, one of the jaws having at its sides inwardly eX- tending bearing contacts for one side o'fa I blade, and a stem associated with the other jaw and positioned intermediate of the bearing contacts of the companion jaw and constituting a bearing contact for the other side of the blade.
4. A blade holder for sharpening devices comprising oppositely disposed jaws. one of the jaws having bearing contacts for one side of a blade, spaced-apart-lips extending inwardly from the other jaw, and a stem passed through said lips and one end constituting a bearing contact for the other side of the blade. I
5. it blade holder for sharpening devices comprising oppositely disposed jaws, one of the jaws having inwardly extending bearing contacts for one side of a blade and upwardly extending supporting prongs, the other jaw having a loop support from its companion jaw and formed with inwardly extending spaced-apart lips, and an adjusting stem passed through said lips and one.
end constituting a bearing contact for the other side of the blade.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of-two witnesses.
