T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, RUSSELL H. VII.- HELM and FREDERICK W. RUnmN. citizens of the United States. and residents. respectively, of Easton. county of Northampton, State of Pennsylvania, and Phillipsburg. county of \Varren, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Steel Retainer, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to steel retainers for holding the steel or bit of a percussive tool, particularly in that form of device known as a clinker breaker, in which the blows of impact upon the steel delivered by a hammer piston are utilized to break clinkers and other excessively hard substances, althouh my improved construction could be app ied as a steel retainer for fluid actuated hammer drills of the usual types.
The objects of the invention are to secure a strong and rugged retainer, capable of withstanding severe blows and hard and rough usage without breakage, and yet readily applied to a percussive tool and easily adjusted to open and closed position by means of a simple locking device which securely and positively holds the retainer locked in closed position and can be quickly unlocked.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and to all these ends the invention consists of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical section illustrating the device applied to the front end of a percussive tool,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device in unlocked position, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the device showing its mode of operation.
Referring to the drawings, the lockin device is ada ted to be mounted-on the olts A and B w iich are adapted to be connected in any suitable manner to the front head 0 of a percussive tool, as for instance a clinker breaker. The steel or bit D extends into the front head C in position to receive the impact blows of the reciprocating fluid actuated hammer piston of the machine. vices of the character to which this invention relates. the steel retainer clasps or par tially surrounds the shank of the steel for wardly of the collar E. As the steel is driven forward by repeated blows. the collar E will strike the retainer with great force and such retainers are substantially and strongly built to withstand hard usage.
The retainer bolts A and B may be cushioned by means of the coiled springs F adapted to be compressed between the lugs G on the front head C and the nuts H at the ends of the bolts. A guide member J having a central aperture K for guiding the steel D connects the outer ends of the bolts and a yoke L is pivotally supported upon one bot A and adapted to be locked in closed position to the other bolt B.
The guide member J is supported in spaced relation to the front head C by means of the sleeve 0 on the bolt A interposed between the yoke and the front head and also by means of the sleeve P on the bolt B interposed between the guide member J and the front head C.
The yoke L is provided with a central rccess Q for the steel D and an end recess It adapted to pass over the bolt'li and surround the sleeve P. A locking device. preferably in the form of a longitudinally movable sleeve S slidable on the. spacing sleeve 1 is movable into and out of engagement with the locking end of the yoke L. For this purpose the end recess It of the yoke l. is formed ith two internal diameters. the larger diameter T and the smaller diameter U. By grasping the flange X of the locking sleeve S with the fingers, as indicated in Figure 3, the sleeve may be moved from locked position indicated in Figure 1, and swung entirely free from the bolt B to unlocked position, as indicated in Figure 3, so that the yoke L may be swung free and clear of the steel 1) as shown in Figure 2. In order to hold the steel and lock the yoke in closed po sition the locking sleeve S is held as indicated in Figure 3, and the yoke is swung into position over the bolt B in which case the sleeve S is released and assumes the position indicated in Figure 1.
We claim:
1. A steel retainer comprising bolts adapted to be secured to the front head of a percussive tool, a uide member connecting the ends of said olts and supported in spaced relation to the front head, said guide having a central aperture for guiding the steel, a yoke for holding the steel pivoted to one bolt and adapted to be swung entirely free from the opposite bolt, said yoke being provided with a central recess for the steel and an end recess having two internal diameters adapted to pass over the opposite bolt, and a vmanually adjusted longitudinallv movable sleeve on said opposite bolt having two external diameters adapted to cooperate with the said end recess for locking the yoke in closed position.
2. A steel retainer comprising a pair of bolts adapted to be secured to the front head of a percussive tool. a guide member connecting the ends of said bolts and supported in spaced relationship to. the front head. said guide member having a central aperture for guiding the steel, a yoke for holding the steel pivoted to one bolt and adapted to be swung entirely free from the opposite bolt, said yoke being provided with a central recess for the steel, and an end recess having two internal diameters adapted to pass over the opposite bolt, a longitudinally movable sleeve on said opposite bolt having two external diameters adapted to cooperate with the internal diameters of said end recess for locking the yoke in closed position, a spring between the front head and said sleeve, the means on said sleeve for enabling said sleeve to be moved longi tudinally.
3. A steel retainer comprising cushioned bolts adapted to be secured to the front head of a percussive tool, a guide member connecting the ends of said bolts and supported in spaced relationship to the front head. said guide member having a central aper ture for guiding the steel, a oke for holding the steel pivoted to one bolt and adapted to be swung entirely free from the opposite bolt, said yoke being provided with a central recess for the steel, and an end recess having two internal diameters adapted to ass over the opposite bolt, a sleeve interposed between the pivoted end of said yoke andthe front head. a longitudinally movable sleeve on said opposite bolt adapted to enter the larger recess in the yoke and having a reduced portion adapted to cooperate with said smaller recess in the yoke for locking the yoke in closed position, a spring interposed between said movable sleeve and front head, and an external flange on said movable sleeve for enabling said sleeve to he moved longitudinally.
