.UNITED 'STATES I 1,503,843 PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS P. POWERS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.,
HEADLIGHT.
Application filed May 28,
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that LOUIS P. POWERS, citizen of the United States, residing, at Philadelphia, lin the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in headlights for automobiles and the like. the prilnary object ot which is to provide a structure ot' novel design havingas an integral part means adapted to eliminate the glare trom the lighting element, so the beam ot light projected from the headlight will not be blinding to the drivers oi autoinobiles and pedestrians approaching in the opposite direction.
A further object ot the invention is to provide. a `lieadlight ot' the above mentioned character which will sutliciently illuminate the toadway` the required distance. in Jront ot' the vehicle. y
Another object ot' the invention is to provide a headlight of the above mentioned character which is simple and durable in construction. composed of a t'ew parts. et` ticient. and reliable in performing its iunction. and inexpensive to manu laeture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course ot the following description.
ln the. accompanying drawing' forming a 'part ot' this specification' and `in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughfmt the same.l
Figure l. is a llongitudinal cross sectional view of my improved headlight, and
Figure L. is a perslwctiveview ot the saine showing the parts in separate relation.
1n the drawing, wherein l'or the purpose ot illustration l have shown a preferred embodiment ot' my invention' the numeral 5, designates an elongated easing of substantially oval shape i/ii'fcl/'oss `section having a front circular ope/ning (i. encircled by an annular screw `,threaded flange 7 and a dome 8 formed at/i't. top. 'lhe bottom 9 of the casing is/ iclined upwardly vtowards the, rear e'ndflt) which is disposed above'the cento/ro, fthe `t'ront opening (i. The dome S isyprovided with a downwardly7 inclined vfrotit/ wall 11 in alinement with the rear end and which adjacent/its jointure with the jHarige 7 is provided witlna.'v depression 12 1923. Serial No. 641,990.
projecting slightly below the periphery7 Ot the ange. The rear wall 1() is provided. with a cent-ral screw threaded aperture 13,
to receive a removablelamp socket 14 which \supports an incandescent lamp 15. Fitted within the casing fin spaced relation. is a removable shell or reflector 1S). contorniing in shape to the casing and hence need not be specilically described. The rear end ot' the reflector has an opening 2t) which tits over the lamp socket 1l. and the flange 21 has its edge bent reversely and outwardly forming the beading 2Q and rim 2?), the latter beingl normally seated On the lugs Q-t projecting inwardly from the flange T ot' the casing. These lugs are provided V'with pins 25 which tit in the V-shaped n'otches 25 cut at intervals in therim 23, locking the re- 'tlector against revolving movement.
nular screw threaded ring 26 is threaded on thel flange 7 and carries a glass lens 27 held in place hy clips. QS. A packing cord 29 is placed between the ring 26 and the rim 23 whereby the latter is held securely in place. The casing is equipped at each side with an a pertured lug 80 to receive the arms 31 of the usual bracket 32 mounted on the vehicle. When assembled the lamp 15 will bc in alinement with the inclined wall 33 of the dome 34 ot' the refiector. as clearly shown in Figure 1. A, In use` it lan be readily seen that by reason Of the peculiar construction of the retlectot, the wall 33 of the dome 31 is in direct alinement with the lighting element 15 whereby the glare is eliminated from the light rays before heilig projected onto the roadway. A headlightot this construc- I tion will avoid accidents caused by glaring headlights which are blinding to drivers of machines approaching in the opposite direc tion. It will not. require the use. of special non-glare lens and hence will not reducethe tiem ofJight thrown in front of the ma;u
chine.f f-'l`he design of the casing is neat and attractive and 1s so shaped itmay be cast in one piece.
It is to be understood that the form Otmy invention 'herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred. example Ot the same. and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of' parts ma be resorted tO Without departing from tie spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
An an- Having thus'fully described my invention, what I claim is Y 1. In a headlight, the combination of an elongated casing and reflector of substantially oval shape'in cross section, each having a front circular opening disposed on a vertical plane and surrounded by an annular ange, a bottom 'w all inclined upwardly towards the back wall which is disposed above the center of said opening and a top wall disposed on a yhorizontal lane above the eripheral edge of said opening, said top Wal having its forward portion inclined downwardly adjacent `said opening connectingthe top wall with said iange and form-l ing a shield Within said casing to rear of said opening and an incandescent light mounted in the back and adjacent the top wall of said reflector in alinement with said shield.l
2. In a headlight, the combination of a casing, a reector removably mounted in said casing, said casing and refiector each having a front opening surrounded by an annular flange, a bottom Wall inclined up wardly towards the back Wall which is disposed above the center of said opening and a top wall disposed on a horizontal plane above the peripheral edge of said opening, said top wall having its forward portion inelined downwardly at its jointure with said flanges, a plurality of spaced lugs extending radially from the inner periphery of the flange of said casing having pins passing therethrough, a rim extending laterally from the flange of said reflector adapted to seat on said lugs and having a plurality of spaced notches to fit over said pins, said lugs and pins spacing said reiiector from the casing and preventing rotary movement thereof, and a clamping ring' secured to said casing and bearing against said refiector.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
LOUIS P. POWERS.
