T. F. TYLER WOOD HEELv CLAMFD Filed June I L 4 12 3 fwn-m I lY l. l L
` Invem;
Patented Aug. 5, 1924.
UNITED' STATES Application led .Tune 14, 1923. Serial No."645,309.
To all 'whom t mwy concern.'
Be it known that I, THADDEUS FRANK TYLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Wood-Heel Clamps, of
usually consisted of an arm adjustably mounted on a fixed vertical post, said arm .having at its end a quick acting cam which is arranged to be operated by a handle connected thereto, and to force the upper clamping member into engagement with the With this form of device it is necessary to have the relative adjustment of the base-supporting means and the arm correspond quite accurately to the height of the heel, as the motion secured by the` cam is very short. As the time required to place the heel in position and rto remove it is a factor of considerable importance, where large numbers of heels are to be covered, the time lost in making adjustments and in operating the cam lever become matters of considerable importance.
The chief objection, however, to the construction which has generally been used for this purpose is that the arm and camoperated clamping'means for engaging the/topof the heel are so supported that the view` which the operator has of the surfaces to be covered is seriously obstructed, and it is very desirable, in orderthat the work may be readily and properly done, for the operator to be able to see without difficulty all portions of the surfaces to be covered. It is also desirable that the clamp for holding l the heel be so constructed that the manipulation of the covering, in placing it in position, smoothing out all wrinkles, and drawing it .tightly over the surfaces to which it is connected, shall be interfered with as little as oible.
he objects of my invention are to provide a form of clamp for the purpose, above indicated,A which may be opened and closed by means ofy a' treadle, `so that the o erator will have both hands free for removing one heel and placing. another in position, and further to provide a clamp, which is so constructed that the view which the operator has of the work will be practically unobstructed, and the work may be rapidly and satisfactorily performed.
I accomplish these objects by the means hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Whichz- Fig. ,1 is a central vertical sectional view of a form of heel clamp containing an embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
As shown in the drawing, adapted to be mountedI upon which a post 2 is mounted, said post having a threaded bore extending from its upper end, in which a stem 3 is threaded, said stem having a pair of ears 4 at its upper end, between which a iiange' 5, on the under side of the base engaged member 6, is arranged to tilt on a pivot 7. The lower edge portion of the flange 5 is provided with a series of corrugations or .notches 8, which are adapted to be. engaged by a spring pressed bolt 9 mounted in the stem 3, said bolt having a handle 10 for depressing the same. so that the inclination of the base engaging member 6 may be varied according to the pitch of the heel, and the top may be adjusted to a horizontal position. A lock nut the clamp is 11 is provided on the stem 3 so that the stem may be securely locked in any vposition to which it may be adjusted. A tubular casing 12 isvixed in the bench 1, and a rod 13 is slidably mounted therein, said rod being extended entirely therethrough, and through' the opening in the bench, and being guided therein by a cap 18 on the upper end, .and a plug 26 inthe lower end of-said casing. The lower end of said rod 13 is loosely connected to a lever 14 pivoted on a bracket 15 on the under side of the bench, the opposite end of the lever 14 being connected bv a link 16 to a treadle 17 so that, when the treadle is depressed, the rod l13 may be lifted. A coiled spring 19 is arranged in the casing 12 about the rod 13 between the cap 18 anda pin 20 fixed in the rod 13, so that said spring will normally act to press the rodk13 downwardly. .The upper end portion of the rod13 lis provided with an internally screw threaded bore to receive one end of an arm 21, which is screwed therein, said arm being adapted to'be locked in any position to which' it may be adjusted by a a bench 1, in
lock nut 22 threaded thereon and adapted to be screwed against the end of the rod. Said arm 21 consists of a rigid metal rod of 4relatively-small diameter, bent at right anposition of Fig. 1, in which position the heel may be readily placed in position on' the base member 6, or removed therefrom.
4When the heel has been placed in position, the'pressure on the treadle will be removed, permitting the spring 19 to force the arm downwardly and clamp the heel firmly onto the base 6, so that the heel may be clamped almost instantly without using the hands. As the arm 21 is of small diameter, it will not obstruct the View of the operator to an objectionable extent, so that after theY heel has been clamped in position thevcovering may`be applied in the correct position and drawn tightly over the surface of the heel, so that all wrinkles will be removed. This work may be rapidly performed, as the work 'of the hands of the operator as well as the vision will be practically unobstructed. The range of movement provided by the treadle is-such that heels which vary considerably in height may be clamped in position without readjustment of the parts, but in case adjustment is necessary for wider variations, the arm 21 may be adjusted in the rod 13, by screwing it up or down therein, or the height of the base support my be adjusted, as previously described. When the heel is removed and pressure on the treadle is -re- Y moved, the pin 20 will rest on the plug 26, which will serve as a stop.
I claim- A heel clamp comprising a fixed member having an upwardly facing heel-supporting face, a vertically disposed casing mounted adjacent said member, a rod extending through said casing and reciprocally mounted therein, ya spring engaged with said casing and rod to press the rod downward, a treadle for lifting said rod, and a rigid arm connected to the upper end of said rod and arranged for adjustment longitudinally thereof, said arm being extended horizontally and having a depending end portion provided with a heel top engaging face at its lower end arranged in cooperative relation with said supporting face. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication.
THADDEUS F. TYLER.
