A TTOR/VEYS Patented Aug. 5, 1924.
- UNITED sT TEs meant PATENT errata.
NATHAN SCHNIPPER AND RUBIE BRODY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BABY CARRIAGE.
Application filed. September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,735.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, NATHAN SGHNIPPEB, a citizen of the United States, andRUBin BRODY, a citizen of Poland, both residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New 'York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Baby Carriage, of which the following is a full, clear, and'exact description. The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in baby carriages, and it pertains more particularly to baby carria es of the folding type. r
t is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a folding baby carriage which will have the apearance of a suit-case or other form of baggage when folded.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the character described which when its extended position will function as a baby carriage, go-cart, or the like.
It is a still further object of the invention.
to construct the device so that when the same is folded there will be a certain amount of available space for carrying articles of clothing, toys, or the like.
With the above and other objects in view,
reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, the said device being shownin its folded position; 7
Fig.2 is a similar View thereof, the said device being shown in its openposition;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the draw.- ings, the device comprises a bottom wall 11 and a side wall 12 preferably formed integral one with the other. Hingedly secured to the free edge of the bottom wall 11, as at 13, is aside wall 14, and said side wall 14 has side and end flanges 15 preferably formed integral therewith. Adapted to cooperate with the open side of the side wall 14, is a cover plate 16, and said plate 16 is maintained in closed position by means of a coil spring 17, which surrounds the pintle of the hinge 13 of said side wall 14. The reference character 18 designates the end walls, and said end walls are hingedly secured to the side wall 12, as at 19. The top wall is designated by the reference character 20, and said top wall is provided with a flange 21, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Secured to the inner face of each of the end walls 18 and mounted in brackets 22, is a'wheel 23, preferably of the disk type. Each of these brackets 22 is provided with a stud 24, which stud is formed with a head 25, adapted to be received between resilient fingers 26 carried by; bowed members 2?, which latter forms arms for the device when in its open or extended position. Each of these arms is secured to the bottom wall 11,
as at 28, and to the front side wall 12, as at 29.
The reference character 30 designates a bracket secured to each of the end members 18, and slidably mounted in each of said brackets is an L-shaped arm 31, and carried by each of said L-shaped arms 31 is a wheel 32. These arms 31 are adapted to be reciprocated within their respective brackets 30, and when extended serve to support or prop the device against rocking over backwardly.
In order to maintain the side members in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, the end. members 18 are provided on their outer faces with resilient clips 33, and said clips are adapted to be engaged by a latch member 34, carried by the outerface of the front wall 12, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1. This latch member has formed on each of its ends, a loop 35, and said loop has a straight edge 36. The straight edge 36 of each of these loops is adapted to engage the resilient clips 33 when the side members 18 are moved about their hinges 19, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
I Mounted in a guideway 37 on the outer face of the front side wall 12, is reciprocating member 38, and said member 38 is adapted to be extended to support the top wall in horizontal alinement with the front side wall 12 to permit of the device assuming the position of a bed. The flange 21 of the wall 20 is provided with a prop 39, which prop, when the device is tilted forwardly, serves to prevent a complete turning-over thereof.'
The top wall 20 is provided with a handle 40, which is pivotally secured thereto and serves the means for transporting the device when the same is in folded position.
Pivotally secured, as at 41, to lugs 42 carried by the arm rests 27, are links 45, and pivotally secured, as at 44 to said first-mentioned links are links 45. Pivotally connect ed as at 46 to the links 45, are links 47, and a catch 48 is adapted to secure said links47 about their pivotal point 46. This system of pivoted links provides a folding draw handle for the device which is adapted to fold inwardly within the confines of the device when in its folded position.
In order to' fold the device the L-shaped arms 31 are moved forwardly of their bi c -J- ets 30 until the wheels 32 occupy a llSll'lio-ai within the confines of their end walls 18. After this has been done, the latch 34 d sengaged from the resilientclips 33 and the end walls are permitted to swing relative to the front wall 12 until the heads 25 of the members 24 engage their respective resilient fingers 26, which serves to hold the and walls 18 in proper folded position. The handle is now folded inwardly of the device, and the side wall is moved about pivotal point until it is engaged with.
' in the same manner as such articles.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a folding baby-cariage which when in its folded position will simulate an article of baggage,
and that by the provision of the cover plate, storage space for articles of clothing or the like is provided even when the device is in its folded position; 7
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body portion comprising a bottom wall and a side wall formed integral one with the other, a side wall hinged to said bottom wall, a plurality of end walls hinged to the first-inentioned side wall and adapted to fold inwardly thereof, supporting wheels carried by the end walls, means mounted on the outer faces of the first-mentioned side wall for retaining the end walls in right-angular position with respect to the first-mentioned side wall,.and arm rests carried by the body portion and serving as means for limiting he movement of the endwa-lls relative to the body portion.
