'HERBERT ELLIOT sINeLEroN, or MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
BENCH: vrsn;
, Application filed September To all whom t may conce/Mt:
Be 1t knownl that I, HERBERT ELLIOT SINGLETON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of .231 Elizabeth` Street, Melbourne, in the county of Bourke,
State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, importer, have invented certain new and usefu=l Improvements in Bench Vises, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification My object is to provide an inexpensive construction of benclrvise for the purpose of clamping either parallel, taper, or irregular shaped metal or wooden pieces of work. I will now proceed to describe my invention with` reference to the accompanyinO' drawings.
Figure l is a side elevation of a bench vise constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan thereof, Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the base plate of the vise, shewing the engagement therewith of the adjust-able rear jaw when positioned for gripping the work.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the base plate taken on the line a, l), Figure 3.
Figure 5 represents an inverted plan of the adjustable rear jaw; whilst Figure 6 is a plan of the slidable front jaw of the vise.
Figure 7 is a central longitudinal section of Figure 6 taken on the line (0) Figure 8 is a section of the eccentric or cam employed in the operation of the slidable front aw.
In the Several figures like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference. j
My improved bench vise consists of a rectangular shaped cast metal base plate (a.) which can be permanently fastened to a wooden bench or table, by means of screw threaded bolts and nuts, or wood screws inserted through three perforated ears or lugs (o), (c), and (d), projected from the sides and rear end respectively of said base plate. This plate (a) is provided with a longitudinal parallel slot (e) to allow of the sliding of the adjustable rear jaw (f) to any position on the two parallel toothed racks (g) andv (7L) provided in the base 'plate and situated one at either side of said slot (c), according to the width of the work to be clamped.
The adjustable rear aw (f) is retained in the desired position, whilst holding the piece 19, 1922. serial No. 589,101.
of work, by means of two projected transverse teeth and (77) depending from the rear jaw to engage the beforementioned toothed racks (g) and (It). Ihe jaw (f) is guided and held after adjustment by means of the tongue projected from its lowerV side, and is also held by a T shaped end or cross bar (7c) adapted to engage the seat (l) of a longitudinal recess (m) situated in the underpart of the base plate.
The adjustable rear jaw (f) is provided with a ribbed face plate (n) from the underside of which a lug (0l) is downwardly projected for engaging the slot (e), and also vfor assisting in guiding said jaw during its adjustment on the toothed racks (g) and The slidable front jaw (p) is positioned upon the base plate, and is adjustable to any angle andmay be moved either backwardl'y or forwardly by an eccentric or cam (Q) integrallycast with an operating handle (r).
rIhe eccentric is pivotally positioned on the countersunk headed axial pin (s) the end of which is screw threaded at (t) to fit into a threaded hole (u) provided in 'the base plate (a) and wherein it is secured by means of the threaded nut Integrally cast with the slidable front jaw (p) and at right angles to the clamping face thereof, is a flat face plate (w) provided with an elongated slot (ai) through which is passed the axial pin (s) of the eccentric or cam, so as to permit of the setting of said jaw to a convenient angle for gripping the front side of the work. 'Ihe length of this slot is about equal to the amount of throw given to the eccentric For assembling the adjustable rear jaw (f) in position upon the toothed racks (g) and (7L) the T-shaped end or cross bar of the tongue (j) is passed downwardly through the apertured end (y) of the slot (c) along which it is then moved to the required position upon said racks (g) and A circular flange (e) is projected from the upper part of the eccentric to give the handle the appearance of occupying a midway position between the two ends of the slidable front jaw (p), and moves in and out of the recess (2') of the latter.
In using my bench vise the handle (fr) is tiret moved to a position lengthwise with the base plate, as shewn in Figures l and 2. The slidable front jaw (p) is then pressed back by the operator, to contact with the heel or lower side of the eccentric (g) so that after the adjustment of the jaws (f) and Y (29) to suit the shape of the front and rear sides of the work, the eccentric (g) is rotated by operating the handle (r) in a left hand direction. By such means the eccentric acts against the jaw at (p) and thereby pushes said jaw inwardly until the work is gripped. lflihen the pressure is thus applied to the .jaw (p) the teeth and of the adjustable rear jaw will bear hard against Vthe engaged teeth of the toothed racks ,(g)
and (it), whilst the cross bar (7c) simulta- 3 neously engages the seat Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. ln a bench vise comprising a base plate Vhaving side walls, spaced rack bars carried by the said walls and extending inwardly towards each other to form shoulders, an adjustable rear jaw having teeth thereon to engage the racks, and a tongue on the said jaw projecting downwardly between the rack bars and provided with a head to engage the shoulders formed by the rack bars, a lug on the jaw extending betweenthe rack vbars to guide thesaine, a front jaw provided with a recess and having a base portion provided with an elongated slot turnably mounted on the base plate for horizontal adjustment, a manually operated eccentric provided with a lip engaging the recess carried by the base portion, and securing means passing through said eccentric and elongated slot to permit clamping action of the'said jaw when the Y jaw hav-ing a recess at its upper outer edge,
and an eccentric overlying the slot of the lateral portion of the front jaw and a pin extending through the eccentric and the slot of the lateral portion of the Jfront jaw, the eccentric havingl an overhanging lip to overlie the recess in the upper outer edge of the upstanding part of the front jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my` Y name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT ELLIOT SINGLETON.
