Description

L. WALLENSTEIN MEANS FOR CONTROLLING DATING STAMPS Filed Jan. 4, 1922 Patented Aug. 5, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MEANS FOR CONTROLLING DATING S TAMPS.
Application filed January 4, 1922. serial n0. seas-34.
T all whom it may concern: 7 7
Be it known that I, Lno lVALLENsTnIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Controlling Dating Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand stamps, daters, alphabet stamps, or other devices having character changing means, but it is noted that the invention is not limited to hand stamps nor even to stamps or charac- "ter changing devices.
One object of the invention is to provide an apparatus or device of this kind by which the characters may be easily changed without soiling the hands.
Another object .of the invention is to provide an apparatus or device of this kind in which suflicient force may be easily applied to change the character carrying parts, even though the latter may be glued in place, as with ink.
Other objects of the invention are to improve generally th simplicity and efficiency of such devices and to provide a device or apparatus of this kind which is durable, economical to manufacture and operate and which will not easily get out of order. The improved character changing means may be so economically manufactured that it may be provided on the stamp Without raising the selling cost of the stamp.
For the accomplishment of these and other objects my invention is shown embodied in a stamp which briefly stated, comprises a frame having an upper member, sid arms and a lower pressure plate, and
carrying a shaft mounted between the upper part of the arms, said shaft rotatably receiving spools carrying end disks provided with teeth. Character bands are disposed around said spools and pressure plate; and
actuating levers are loosely pivoted on said shaft and are each provided with a tooth engageable with said teeth of the disks for rotating the spools and advancing the bands for changing the characters.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein details of the invention are described, the invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, showing by way of example one of many possible embodiments of the invention, Fig. l is a front elevation of my improved stamp;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the stamp;
Fig. 8 is an inner face elevation of one of the actuating levers;
Fig. 4 is an inner side elevation showing the actuating lever and end disk in one relative position; and
Fig. 5' is an inner sideelevation of the lever and disk in another position.
The various parts of my stamp are carried in a frame comprising an upper member of inverted channel shape carrying a handle 11 and having transverse slits 12 at the ends and intermediate slits 13 in its front edge portion. Flat side arms 15 integral with the ends of the upper member 10 carry a trough shaped pressure plate 16 having its side walls 17 disposed between the lower ends of said arms, and its end walls 18 turned up and clamping against the outer face of said lower ends of the arms 15.
A shaft or pivot member 20 mounted between the upper part of said arms carries outer and intermediate positioning members or spools 2.1 rotatably mounted upon said shaft, the outer spools being arranged between outer and intermediate slits and the intermediate slits being arranged between intermediate slits, the outer spools being of greater thickness than the intermediate spools. Each spool comprises a main cylindrical portion 22, and an end flange disk 25, each disk being disposed near one of said slits 1.2 or 13 and being provided with dulled or rounded ratchet teeth 26 forming front cam edges 27 and rearward abrupt shoulders 28. Outer and intermediate character or date carrying endless members or bands 29 are tensioned around said spools 21 and pressure plate 16, the outer'bands being of greater Width than the intermediate bands.
A thin flat actuating member or lever is disposed at the flanged end of each spool and is provided with an outer handle ment of the tooth 32 with the shoulders 28 on the spool 21 which cooperates with the lever whereby the spool is caused to rotate, and to cause, and to influence and permit the ramming of the tooth 32 over the cam edges 27 upon reverse movement of the lever, whereby the spool is not rotated.
The operation of the device is simple and obvious. Normally all of the actuating levers occupy the position of the uppermost lever of Fig. 2. WVhen it is desired to change the character, as for instance when changing the date of a dating stamp or a name or word on an alphabet stamp, the handle portion 31 is grasped and pressed down. The caming action of the slot 35 on the shaft 20 holds the tooth 32 in engagement with the shoulder 28 and the band 29 is moved an increment. This operation is repeated, if necessary, until the required character is placed in printing position, and with all of the spools.
lVhen the lever is moved in reverse direction, as just after the band has been moved an increment, the slot 35 cams on the shaft 20 and influences the lever to move outwardly to permit the tooth 32 to cam over the edge 27.
After the required changes have been made the levers are seated in the slits 12 and 13 as shown by the position of the upper levers of Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hand printing stamp comprising a frame; a shaft in the frame; spools rotatable on said shaft; lever arms mounted at their lower ends on said shaft; and means appurtenant to the lever arms engageable with means appurtenant to the spools for rotating the spools when the lever arms are moved in one direction and for moving the lever arms on said shaft for permitting the spools to be stationary when the lever arms are moved in direction reverse to the first mentioned direction.
2. A hand printing stamp comprising a frame; a shaft on the frame; outer and intermediate spools rotatable on said shaft; outer and intermediate lever arms connected by elongated slots to said shaft; and means appurtenant to the lever arms engage-able with means appurtenant to the spools for rotating the spools when the lever arms are moved in one direction and for moving the lever arms on said shaft for permitting the spools to be stationary when the lever arms are moved in direction reverse to the first direction.
3. A hand printing stamp comprising a frame; a shaft on the frame; outer and intermediate spools rotatable on said shaft; outer and intermediate lever arms connected by elongated slots at their lower ends to said shaft and having teeth engageable with teeth appurtenant to the spools for rotating the spools when the lever arms are moved in one direction and for moving the lever arms on said shaft for permitting the spools to be stationary when the lever arms are moved in direction reverse to the first direction.
4. A hand printing stamp comprising a frame; a shaft in the frame; outer and intermediate spools rotatable on said shaft; disks fixed to the spools having teeth on their edges forming front cam edges and rearward abrupt shoulders; outer and intermediate lever arms connected by elongated slots at their lower ends to said shaft, the arm portions of the lever arms having teeth thereon engageable with the rearward abrupt shoulders of the teeth of said disks when the lever arms are moved in one direction and eugageable with the front cam edges of the teeth of said disks when the lever arms are moved in direction reverse to the first direction.
