Be it known. that I, CARL AUGUST RUD- QVIST, a subject of the King of. Sweden, re-. siding at Sta-ket, in the Kingdom of Sweden, 5 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-Plug Valves for Petroleum and Crude-Oil Engines, of which the following is a specification. I I
The present invention relates, to a spark plug valve for petroleum and, crude oil en- 'gines, in which the spark plug is fitted in a movable valve body which is provided with two oppositely arranged valve faces which i cooperate with two corresponding valve seat,
faces on a stationary sleeve in which the valve body is guided, in such manner that the valve body obtains two .definite closing positions, in theone of which the spark plug is in open communication with the combus-J tion chamber of the en ine, and in the other of which it is shut ofi from said chamber. The invention is characterized by this that the means for guiding the valve body in the stationary sleeve is located entirely outside both of said. valve seat faces, so that in both closing positions of the valve body the guide surfaces are shut off from the com bustion chamber. In this manner it is avoided that the products of combustion arrive between the guide surfaces and thereby 0bstruct or render difiicult the movements of the valve body.
The accompanying drawings illustrate byway of example an einbodiment'of the'invcntion. Fig. 1 shows a section'through the ignition chamber of an'engineprovided with a spark plug valve according to the, invention fitted in the wall of the ignition chamber, said valve being adjusted in one closing posi '40 tion, and Fig. 2 shows asimilar section, the

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the ignition chamberof the engine, or the-so called ignition cap in the upper porti'onrof which an injection nozzle 2 is fitted in the ordinary manner, by means of which-nozzle the fuelpetroleum or crude oil is injected and sprayed in the ignition chamber as in.-
dicated in Fig.1. In the side wallof the ignition chamber 1 the spark plug'valve is fitted. Said valve comprises the valve body ,3. 4 and a member 5 surrounding the valve body and having the shape of a substantially cylindrical sleeve, said member being secured to the ignition chamber over an opening in the side, wall of said chamber. The member 5 as well as the portion of the wall of the ignition chamber surrounding the nozzle 2 are provided with water jackets. The valve body comprises two parts, the inner part 3 of: which is screwed into the outer part 4 and'retained in the same by means of a stop .screw 6. The outer part 4 consists of a substantially cylindrical sleeve which ,is
fitted'in the sleeve 5 and is slidable and rotatable in the, same, whereas the inner part 3 consists of a cylindrical sleeve and a head plug 7. Inthe embodiment illustrated said spark plug is provided with a spark 8 and with a current carrylng heating plate 9 which serves to vaporize a portion of the injected fuel which is afterwards ignited by the sparks in the spark gap.
. According to the invention the valve'body 3, e is provided with two oppositely arranged conical valve faces 10 and 11 which cooperate with two corresponding valve seat faceslZ'and 13 on a flange l4.- projecting inwards from .the'stationary sleeve 5. so that the valve body becomes a double valve with two definite closing positions. One of said positions is shown in Fig. 1 in which the faces 10 and 12 bear against one another, and the spark plugiis in operative'position, that is to say in open con .unica-tion with the interior of the ignition chamber, and the otherposition is shown in Fig. 2 in' which the faces 11 and 13 bear against one another .so that the spark plug is shut off from the two valve seat faces 12 and 13, so that in both closing positions of the valve body 3, 4 said cylindrical guide surfaces are shut off from the. ignition chamber and are thus protected from products of combustion penetrating in between said guiding surfaces. The adjustment of the valve body from one position to the other is effected by means of two handles 15 secured to the sleeve 4L and engaging slots 16 in the stationary sleeve 5. One of said slots 16 is shown developed in Fig. 5. As shown in this figure the handles and the slots form together a bayonet joint, so that by sliding and turning the valve body in the sleeve 5 said body may be ad justed and secured in any of the twocclosing positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Vhen the handles 15 occupy the position in the slots indicated by means of the dotted and dashed circle 15- in Fig. 5 the valve body 3, 4 is secured in the position shown in Fig.1, and when the handles occupy the position indicated by means of the circle 15 in Fig. 5 the valve body is secured in the position shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 5 the edges of the slots 16 against which the handles 15 bear in both of said positions, incline slightly relatively to a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve 5, so that by turning the valve body an efficient contact between the valve faces 10 and 12, tained.
In the position of the valve body 4, 3, 3 3 shown in Fig. 1 the spark gap and the heated plate of the spark plug are in open a communication through the apertures between the two extensions 3 with the interior of the ignition chamber 1, the valve body being so positioned that a portion of the injected fuel impinges on the heated plate 9, and when said plate is sufficiently hot, said fuel will be vaporized adjacent the spark gap and will immediately become ignited by the sparks in said gap. I claim:
1. In a spark plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged valve seat faces, a valve body movable in said sleeve and provided with two oppositely arranged valve faces adapted tocooperate with said valve seat faces on said sleeve, said valve body having an aperture between said or 11 and 13, may always be obvalve faces, a spark plug inserted in said valve body and having a spark gap located opposite said aperture in said valve body, and means for guiding said valve body in said sleeve into two positions in each of which one valve face 011 said valve body bears against one valve seat face on said sleeve, and in one of which positions said aperturein said valve body for said spark gap projects outside said sleeve and in the other position said aperture is retracted within said sleeve, said guiding means being located'entirely to one side of both of said valve seat faces. removed from said aperture.

3. In an ignition plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged valve seat faces, a valve body movable in said sleeve and provided with two oppositely arranged valve faces adapted to cooperate with said valve seat faces on'said sleeve, said valve body having an aperture between said valve faces, means for guiding said valve body in said sleeve and means for securing said valve body in two positions in each of which one'valve face on said valve body bears against one valve seat face on said sleeve, and in one of which positions said aperture in said valve body projects outside said sleeve and in the other position said aperture is retracted within said sleeve, said guiding means being located entirely to one side of both of said valve seat faces removed from said aperture. p i

In a spark plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged valve seat faces at one end and at least one sub stantially helical slot at its other end, a valve body movable in said sleeve and provided at one end with two oppositely arranged valve faces adapted to cooperate with said valve seat faces on said sleeve, said valve body having an' aperture between said valve faces, at least one handle secured to the other end of said valve body and adapted to slide in said slot in said sleeve and thereby to secure said valve body in plate located opposite said aperture in said valve body. 7.- In' an ignition plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged securing said valve body in two positions in each of which one valve fac on said valve body bears against one valve seat face on said sleeve, and in one of which positions said aperture in said valve body projects outside said sleeve and in the other position said aperture is re tracted within said sleeve, said guiding means being located entirely to one side 01% both of said valve seat faces removed from said aperture.

In an ignition plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged valve seat faces at one end and at least one substantially helicalv slot at its other end, a valve body movable in said sleeve and provided at one end with two oppositely arranged valve faces adapted to cooperate with said valve seat faces on said sleeve, said valve body having an aperture between said valve faces, at least one handle secured to the other end of said valve body and adapted to slide in said slot in said sleeve and thereby to secure said valve body in said sleeve in two positions in each of which one valve face on said valve body bears against one valve seat face on said sleeve, and in one of which'positions said aperture in 7 said valve body projects outside said sleeve and in the other position said aperture is retracted within said sleeve, and ignition meansin said valve body opposite said aperture in. said valve body.

In an ignition plug valve for petroleum and crude oil engines, the combination of a sleeve having two oppositely arranged valve seat faces, a valve body movable in said sleeve and provided with two oppositely arranged valve faces adapted to cooperate with said valve. seat faces on said sleeve, said valve body having an aperture between said valve faces, and means for guiding said valve body in its movement to either of two positions in each of which one valve face on said valve body bears against one valve seat face on said sleeve and in one of which positions said aperture in said valve body projects outside of said sleeve and in the other position said aperture is retracted within said sleeve, said means being located entirely to one side of both of said valve seat faces removed from said aperture.
10. In a device of the,- class described, the combination with an engine cylinder, and
a sleeve having a pair of valve seat faces,
a valve body in said sleeve, said valve body having a pair of valve faces, a spark plug carried by said valve body, said spark plug being in communication with the gas in said cylinder when one of said valve faces coacts with one of said valve seat faces, said spark plug being closed to said gas when said other, valve face coacts with said other valve seat face, and means for guiding said valve body to cause either of said valve faces to co-op'erate with its respective seat.
